Animal Profile

Kasper

Hello, my name is Kasper. My animal id is #237589. I am a desexed male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 7 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/24/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Kasper is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

My foster writes: Kasper is a curious, high-energy explorer with a big personality and an even bigger love for playtime! He makes himself right at home, roaming the house, keeping an eye on his people, and making sure he's always in the middle of the action. This handsome guy will happily run up to greet you and then settle nearby to supervise whatever you're doing. While he's not a big fan of being picked up or having his head petted, he loves interactive play, especially chasing feather toys. He's very food motivated too, which makes play sessions and enrichment extra fun! Kasper would thrive in a home with space to explore and people who can match his playful spirit with a few active play sessions each day. He's perfectly content being left alone, as long as he has room to roam. At night, he'll curl up next to you in bed or snooze beside you on the couch. If you're looking for a smart, adventurous cat who wants to be your curious little sidekick, Kasper is ready to meet you! My foster writes: Kasper is one of the most curious cats around....when he's not napping. He loves poking his head behind doors and into corners, and always needs to know what's cooking in the kitchen! You'll often find him lounging on the floor after all this adventuring. Though he takes some time to warm up, he enjoys spending time around his humans. Give it a few days and, sure enough, you'll find there's a spot on the couch or bed with Kasper's name on it. What my friends at ACC say about me: I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I am looking for a home with a patient person. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/13/25 FB32 Lying down in the top cubby with a neutral body and eyes. Eagerly accepts treats offered and welcomes petting on the head. Gently leans in for cheek rubs and eats more treats. When reaching down his back to stroke his body, he tenses up, steps back, whines, and raises a paw up. After pulling my hand away and giving him space, he calms down, lies down, and continues to appreciate more treats and petting on the head and cheeks. 10/22/25 FB32 Lying down in top cubby with neutral body and eyes. Eagerly accepts treats offered and welcomes petting on the head and leans in for cheek rubs. Easily coaxed with more treats to follow the assessor into the main kennel area. He may occasionally tolerate attention at the front, but if there is a sudden loud noise or quick movement, he may skittishly retreat back into the top cubby. He is easily coaxed with more treats again to the main kennel area but crouches down on the shelf with alert eyes and his tail wrapped around his body and flicking. When reaching close to offer a treat by hand to have him follow a trail of treats and wet food into the larger carrier for potential transport, he swats my hand and hisses but stays in the same spot. After giving him some time to calm down, we attempt to towel him; unfortunately, when reaching close with the towel, he swats and bites the towel. Unsuccessful with handling, so we keep him in his current kennel. 4/30/26 Kasper cautiously scanned the room and approached with curiosity. He briefly accepted petting, keeping his eyes wide and body low with his tail down, showing some nervousness. He responded well to being touched until with the scratcher tool he patted it preventing further contact and ended with enjoying the treats offered. 5/1/26 FB09 Kasper was crouching in his den, eyes wide and dilated upon opening the kennel door. When noticing the treats, he eagerly approached the front of the den and began quickly licking up the treats. His eyes remained wide and dilated throughout the interaction and he was primarily treat motivated, shifting his body to lick and bite the click stick when the handler attempted to pet along his cheek with it. 5/6/26 Vol. Kasper was up at the front of the kennel behind the Shoreline, eyes wide, pupils neutral, ears up. He extends his claws through the kennel bars. Enthusiastically eating tuna purée, he then bit the wooden spoon. Once satisfied, he engaged with the red mouse fishing toy for a minute. Then, when approached with the green pointed, he grabbed it and mouthed it. He allowed head pets by hand through the bars of the kennel. Given his tendency to extend claws and grab, further attempts to pet by hand were avoided. Needs more time. 5/7/26 FB09 Kasper approached the front of the kennel, eyes neutral and ears upright. When opening the door, he eagerly began licking up the treats offered to him, allowing pets by hand along his head while eating, his body remaining calm and neutral. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Rough play,Uncomfortable with pick up,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Tolerates petting on the head and cheek rubs; however, he is sensitive to touch on the back and body and uncomfortable with pick up. He may escalate to retreating, swatting, or biting (see Known History and Enrichment Notes above from 10/13/25 and 10/22/25 for more details). We recommend building a positive association with the food rewards nearby and eventually inside the carrier so then Kasper may willingly and comfortably enter the carrier on his own or when coaxed with food. In order to safely handle Kasper in shelter, we recommend setting up a den at the portal door so then he can retreat from the cubby to the den without having to physically handle him.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 09/27/25 Kasper was alert and cautious, resting on top of the den and reacting to sudden noises. He allowed brief petting with a slow approach but showed signs of discomfort with a head whip and slight paw lift. He accepted treats and continued to tolerate attention while remaining wary of his environment. 04/29/26 Kasper is inside of his den with wide dilated eyes and forward ears. He strikes the den cover as the portal is closed. When the assess-a-hand is presented, he hisses and nips at the hand, not allowing touch. Kasper is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. ?He has tried to bite and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. ?He? may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
