Domino
Hello, my name is Domino. My animal id is #237285. I am a female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/21/2025.
Domino is at risk due to behavioral concerns in care. Domino has not adjusted well to the care center environment and has displayed kennel stress, and reactivity. She frequently launches off her kennel door, spins repetitively, and exhibits distress behaviors when other dogs are nearby. In-staff observations note snarling, growling, and barking at dogs in proximity, along with pacing and whining.. Domino has also pancaked and refused to walk. Her behavioral presentation suggests significant stress in the shelter environment, with both barrier frustration and difficulty self-regulating. Medically, Domino is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 09/25/25 Domino is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Domino will approach the gate with a tense body, raised hackles and a hard face. Domino walks away and whines, seeking attention from a handler that is present in her pen. She returns to the gate line maintaining a tense body, hard barking at the male dog and must be moved away from the gate. Domino is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (6):: 11/03/25 Domino is at the front of her kennel with a relaxed frame and swaying tail. She is easily leashed and taken for a walk. Domino maintains a relaxed frame as she trots alongside the handler moderately. Domino takes treats gently when administered. They will walk down a side block where there are some steps Domino climbs willingly. She sits at the top and the handler sits with her. She stuffs her face into the handler's pouch, stealing their treats. Domino allows handling as she is pet and will also climb the handler and stand on them, receiving pets. Domino is returned to the facility entering the building as well as her kennel with no issue.
Summary (7):: 10/29/25 (Trainer Note): Domino is jumping off of the front of her kennel and spinning incessantly. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Domino is loose and social with handlers and engages independently with various enrichment items. She is returned to kennel without issue. 10/24/25: Domino is observed launching off his kennel door and spin in his kennel incessantly. 10/23/25: Domino is reported to not want to walk, pancaking and refusing to walk outside. 09/23/25 (BA) Domino is in her crate hard barking, snarling and growling at other dogs as they enter and exit the assessment room. As dogs approach her crate passing by, her behavior intensifies, increasing the volume of her snarling and growling. Later on, she is retrieved for her assessment. As the handler approaches, she is loose bodied in the crate, allowing herself to be leashed and taken to the assessment room. Domino is already collared and a drag leash is placed onto her to free roam. Before her assessment is conducted, she is panting, pacing and whining in the room. (Please refer to BA in Behavior section for more insight). Domino is returned to her crate with no issue once her assessment is complete. 09/22/25 (PG Note): Domino stands at the front of her kennel and allows the handler to leash her with ease before being escorted to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside, a drag leash is placed on her, and she roams the yard exploring until her playmate arrives. At the greeting gate, the dogs complete a nose-to-nose greeting, after which Domino becomes anxious, displaying hard barking, play bows, and heavy panting showing signs of confliction as her elbows raises up into a prey bow. Domino is returned to her kennel safely without any issues. For more information, see dog to dog note.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Domino behavior challenges, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners / Poor Impulse Control: Domino frequently jumps up on handlers. Teaching polite greetings and reinforcing calm behavior through consistent redirection and positive reinforcement will help improve her social interactions. Please see the handout on Basic Manners / Poor Impulse Control. Anxiety: Domino displays signs of anxiety, including panting, pacing, and whining while in the room. These behaviors suggest she may be overwhelmed or stressed in certain environments. Training should focus on creating a calm, predictable routine and incorporating enrichment activities to help her self-regulate and feel more secure. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Kennel Presence / Domino has been observed snarling, growling, and attempting to kennel fight with neighboring dogs, particularly when entering or exiting her kennel. These behaviors indicate barrier frustration and heightened arousal. Training should include desensitization to kennel transitions, structured leash work, and reinforcing calm behavior to reduce reactivity and improve her comfort in the kennel environment. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity / Barrier Frustration.
