Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 10/3/26: Parma Reggiano is introduced to a novel spayed female and is loose and wiggly at the fence, play bowing and digging at the fence. He mouths towards the fence, then bounces around his handler before reapproaching with a loose body. The meet is kept to the fence due to the other dog's disinterest. He is then introduced to a novel intact female and is loose at the fence, play bowing and licking the other dog's snout through the fence. He gives a deep play bow and digs toward the fence. The other dog is let into the yard and he begins bouncing around them and leaping on them, wrapping his paws loosely around her neck/back. He stands on his hind legs frequently, leaping towards her repeatedly and mouths towards her. The two are separated and Parma pulls towards her consistently. The other dog reapproaches and begins engaging in play, Parma gives play slaps and mouths with minimal pressure, leaping on the other dog frequently. At one point, he stands over/lies on top of her as she lays on the ground, licking her snout and remaining loose with an open panting mouth. The two run across the yard together for a few minutes before the meet is ended due to his rough play style, he remains loose and bouncy throughout. 10/1/26: Parma Reggiano is introduced to a novel intact female and is loose and wiggly at the fence with high wags. He play bows and mouths towards the fence, bounces back and forth along the fence line, then gives a deep play play bow while mouthing towards the other dog along the fence line. He shakes off when the other dog disengages and he greets handlers. 9/15/26: Parma Reggiano is introduced to a novel intact female and approaches the fence with a neutral body and mid level wags. He sniffs nose to nose through the fence with helicopter wags and a loose body, then play bows and bounces along the fence line. He reapproaches attempting to continue sniffing but the other dog displays signs of discomfort and the meet is kept to the fence.

Summary (7):: 10/14/26 - Parma Reggiano is by the front of his crate with a loose body and is easy to leash up and exit kennel. He is responsive to treats and allows petting throughout the walk, extremely agile and enjoys jumping over the fences around the trees on the street, handler does light agility jumps back and forth over the fences around the trees and he is visibly enjoying them with a wagging tail and loose body. He listens to verbal cues and is good with checking in with the handler, when returning to kennel he gives no issues. 10/8/26: Parma Reggiano is reported to pull in his crate cover while being reactive towards dogs walking past his crate, and pushing his crate at the same time. 10/3/26: Parma Reggiano is at the front of his crate with a loose body; as the handler attempts to leash him, he gets tangled in it. The handler brings him out by grabbing his collar; Parma dodges his head repeatedly when the handler attempts to leash him, but he eventually stops and allows the leash to be placed. Parma is walked to and rides the elevator; he allows pets during the ride. Parma is brought to the yard for playgroup (see notes). In between the interactions, Parma approaches handler with exuberance and runs around in the same manner (zoomies). He also bites and holds the dragline his collar is attached to. In an aroused state, Parma grabs and mounts another handler's leg; when the main handler pulls him off, he attempts to nip the other's pant leg. He then nips the handler's sleeve. While waiting for another dog to enter, Parma attempts to jump on the handler, but the handler quickly straight arms the leash. After the interactions, the handler brings Parma upstairs and returns him to his crate. 09/14/26: Parma Reggiano is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he is leashed while distracted with a treat and allows pickup before being carefully placed down and walking with handler out to the street. While outside Parma walks with handler and does not pull he will stop to sniff spots of interest and accepts treats from handler when presented to him. Parma shows no reactivity toward dogs but when seeing people he is curious and will stop and attempt to approach them in a curious/social manner. Handler keeps him away and walks him back inside after a while, he is brought to the behavior office for his assessment and once complete is lifted back into kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Parma Reggiano is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Parma.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and lunging towards strangers, we recommend a home with no children. No Cats: Due to hard barking, growling, and lunging towards cats we recommend a home with no cats. No Dog Parks: Due to lunging towards unfamiliar dogs we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness: Parma's previous adopter states that he would mouth them and their clothing. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Parma puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Handling Sensitivity: Parma's previous adopter states that he will snap when held/restrained and when his collar is touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Parma to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Parma's previous adopter states that he lunged at people in the home. He is also noted to bark and growl when startled. During their previous stay Parma was noted to be tense but warmed up over time. During their assessment, Parma was noted to be social with handlers but resisted restraint when the handler held their collar. It is important to move slowly with Parma, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Anxiety: Parma's previous adopter states that he was anxious in the home. If Parma displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Parma's previous adopter states that he will pull towards, lunge, and bark towards moving objects and small animals while on leash. Parma will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than moving objects and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Parma's previous adopter states that he will jump up, bite, and chew on the leash during walks. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
