Auburr
Hello, my name is Auburr. My animal id is #240081. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/24/2025.
Auburr is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Initially Auburr was observed to be highly fearful. Noted to be have a tucked tail and attempt to flee (scaling the walls) when handlers approach. Recently Auburr has warmed up to handlers, however she is noted to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to jump up and bite the leash when handlers attempt to re-leash her and mouth handlers arms with hard pressure. She has also been observed to jump up on handlers and jump at handlers while on leash. During one instance Auburr was observed to bare teeth towards a handler while she was in a pop up crate. Medically Auburr has undetermined allergies, alopecia, an umbilical hernia, and pyoderma.

Summary:: 10/29/25: Auburr greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body. 11/13/25: Auburr greets another dog at the gate with loose wiggly body. she demand barks, lays down at the gate sliding paws under the gate. Off leash, she remains loose and wiggly, rolls over shows her belly and persistently licks the other dogs face. When the other dog runs around the pen, Auburr becomes aroused, vocalizing.
Summary (4):: 11/23/25: Auburr is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed while distracted with some treats and is successfully leashed. Auburr pulls hard out to the street and is frantic while walking, while outside she pulls hard down the street and is somewhat difficult to gain the focus of. She stops to sniff occasionally or to relieve herself, while walking she passes people on the street without issue. When seeing dogs she will stare at them from afar but loses interest when line of sight is broken. After walking for a while she is brought back inside and her leash is clipped before she is returned to kennel without further issue.
Summary (5):: 11/23/25: Auburr is reported to be leash biting and tugging at the leash while on walks outside. 11/16/25: It is reported that Auburr mouthed the handler with hard pressure on their arms. 11/15/25: Auburr is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body, watching the handler as they approach. She is then easily leashed and would push herself out of the kennel, she would have a hard pull out of the room and is then taken for a street walk. Throughout her walk, she would continue to pull hard with a neutral body and heavily panting due to the pulling. As she walks forward, she would walk with her body turned sideways to watch the handler behind her. Auburr would begin to sniff around and relieve herself in multiple spots, shortly after she would sit in front of the handler and would be rewarded with a treat shortly afterwards. Auburr would continue to pull hard ahead and not react towards any passing stimuli, shortly after she is then clipped and returned back to her kennel with no issue. 11/14/25: As handler enters the room, Auburr is lying towards the back of her crate. Handler would call her name with a soft voice, and she would readily approach the front with a soft and wiggly body. Handler tosses a treat in the crate, and she follows. The handler then feeds a treat through the bars, and she would take it with a soft mouth. Auburr is then easily leashed and removed from the crate with no issue; she is taken to the yard, where she would have a hard pull ahead of the handler. While in the yard, she would pull hard into a pen and was placed on a drag leash. While on the drag leash, she would begin to dart around in the pen but would stop as handler would present a treat to her. Shortly after, as handler goes to re-leash her, she begins to jump up onto the handler with an open mouth. She would attempt to mouth the handlers treat pouch but is easily distracted with a treat. As handler throws their leash on her, she would watch it and attempt to mouth it; once she is leashed, these behaviors wouldn't continue. Auburr's drag leash is safely removed and she is returned to a bottom medium kennel with no further issues. 11/13/25- ACS reported when approaching Auburr’s pop up crate she growled and came to the front baring teeth. K9 behavior went with ACS and Auburr was able to be leashed with a treat lure.
Summary (6):: 11/10/25: Auburr is laying down in her crate as handler approaches. She is to be slowly leashed with treats and she pulls hard on the way downstairs for a walk outside. On the walk, she would continue to pull hard ahead and would stop and lay down on the ground when she wanted to receive treats. She had no reactions to dogs or people. She pulls hard with heavy panting on the way back her crate and quickly enters with no issues. 11/3/25- Auburr is at the middle of her pop up crate with a neutral body, she briefly retreats when handler attempts to leash her. Handler was able to lasso the leash on her after a second try. She slowly comes out and is taken down the stairs for a street walk. She walks with a moderate to hard at times when she hears loud noises. When she walks by a person she keeps looking back at them her hackles slightly raised. She is hypervigilant (tail low, looking around) while walking. She takes treats with mild pressure and allows handler to scratch her chin and neck. She is taken for her assessment where a treat lure was used to leash her. She explored the room sniffing around then played with a toy for a little. She was leashed and returned to her pop up crate without issue. 11/1/25: Auburr is sitting at the front of her kennel and stands at the front with a neutral body as the handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and brought out the room. On the street, Auburr walks ahead of the handler with no tension; she only adds tension when she hears loud sounds. She shows slight interest in some passersby and allows to be pet by the handler. When walking back to the shelter, a large item is moved. Auburr yelps and pulls away from the sound, and looks back to see where it was coming from. When entering the building, Auburr adds a little more tension when she hears a dog barking in the distance. The handler then brings Auburr to the yard. As they sit down on the bench, Auburr climbs on the bench to sit next to them. Auburr is receptive to pets given by the handler; she then climbs on the handler's lap, sitting on them for a few minutes. Once she climbs off, the handler walks Auburr inside and takes her upstairs. The handler gently muscles Auburr into a crate and removes their leash with ease.
Summary (7):: 10/27/25: Auburr is at the front of her kennel with a tense body and begins to lip lick as handler approaches. She is then easily leashed using a treat lure and removed from her kennel. She would walk ahead of the handler with a mild pull, ears pinned and tucked tail. She is then taken to the yard where she would begin to sniff around and relieve herself. Throughout the walk she would remain hypervigilant and is easily startled by handler calling her name. Handler tosses her a treat, which she would take. She would spot a bird and become slightly tense with a stiff tail, shortly after she would become neutral bodied once the bird is out of her sight. Shortly after, she is then clipped and returned to kennel with no further issues. 10/25/25: (PM): Auburr is at the back of the kennel, tense tail low. She flinches when the neighboring dog bars and bangs on the side of the kennel. Treats are tossed in and she does not engage at first. A second handler distracts the noisy neighbor and she comes forward eatting treats. She will put her head through the leash loop but quickly back away. After a few times the leash is secured. Once secured she comes out readily pulling hard, tense tucked tail, hypervigilant. Another staff member walks behind her and she spins around. 10/25/25: Auburr is in a pop up crate in the behavior office due to growling and retreating when attempting to remove from the crate. She growled when handlers initially entered the behavior room but was receptive to treats. She would not growl as new handlers entered the room but would display low tense body. She will take treats from handler through the bars. High value treats are used to lure her head forward through the leash. When secured, She retreats and won't come forward. Door is opened wide and handler moves away from the doorway. She slowly comes out eating treats tossed. She scrambles down the hall and into the kennel room, legs flailing out beneath her, looking over her shoulder back and forth. She stands in front her her kennel and goes in with treats and pressure on the leash.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Auburr so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness: Auburr has been obsvered to jump up on handlers with an open mouth and attempt to mouth their treat bag. She is also noted to mouth handlers with hard pressure while off leash in the yard. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Auburr puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Auburr was highly fearful during intake and her medical exam. She was observed to growl at staff, and attempt to flee when in kennel (scaling the walls). Recently Auburr is obsvered to warm up to handlers and allows handling. However she is still obsvered to be fearful on the street and walks with a low tail. During one instance when a handler approaches her while in kennel Auburr escalated to growling and baring teeth. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Auburr associate new people with things she likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Leash Biting: Auburr is obsvered to attempt to mouth the leash when handlers attempt to releash them in the yard. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Arousal: Auburr has been obsvered to jump at handlers and up on handlers while on leash. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Auburr to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
