Legend is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Legend is apparently healthy.

Medically Legend has been diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. What my friends at ACC say about me: My favorite pastime is being visually admired! Pet me with your eyes! A volunteer writes: Legends are human (or cat, as the case may be) so it's progress over perfection as they maintain and we admire their legendary status. Legend was brought to us without a whole lot of information and he's told us repeatedly that the Care Center isn't the place for him to shine as he's meant to. When I introduced myself to Legend, he told me as much before returning to his den. He's the type of cat who prefers a pet with your eyes, not with your hands approach as he gets used to his new normal and, of course, being a legend. Even legends like Legend need a place to call home, so we hope you'll offer yours to him as he finds his way.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
KNOWN HISTORY:: Legend was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/11/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Legend was resting upon approach but appeared alert and tense, with wide eyes and a defensive posture. He hissed in response to gentle talking and watched cautiously from the side portal of his enclosure. When an attempt was made to engage using a scratcher tool, he retreated and struck out, showing clear signs of stress and discomfort. The assessment was ended early to avoid further escalation, and treats were left behind. Overall, Legend is currently highly fearful and reactive, requiring a very slow, hands-off approach to help him feel safe and begin building trust. Legend is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. 9/17/25 Hisses and strikes at the scratcher tool through the side portal door in the den when attempting to make contact. Ended the interaction to help reduce stress. 9/25/25 FB20 Legend is laying in his den with his paws tucked under himself. He does not react when portal is closed and den cover is slowly lifted. Legend ignores offered treats. He tolerates and allows petting with a tool under his chin, on his cheeks, and over his body. He is offered a catnip covered mouse that he sniffs briefly. 10/04/25 FB73 Legend is at the front of the kennel, rubbing his body back and forth against the kennel bars and meowing to solicit attention. He is offered crunchy treats, which he eats immediately. He allows petting on the head, cheeks, and shoulders with the scratcher tool. More treats are offered before petting directly is attempted. He avoids contact and hunches his body forward, tensing but after a few moments he allows me to pet him briefly on the top of his head.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Curious,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Initially fearful and would hiss or strike hard during interactions (see Enrichment Notes above from 9/11/25 for more details). After about 3-4 weeks to adjust to the shelter environment and time to recover from his medical conditions, he has now warmed up to attention and tolerates all petting and handling.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 years old due to initial fearfulness and escalation. Counselor discretion is advised.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Legend was lying down on top of the den with a neutral body and eyes, then he perks up, softly meows, and then hovers over the front ledge of the den. He accepts treats offered in front of him and he is easily coaxed to follow the assessor's hand to climb down from the den and greet the assessor at the front of the kennel. He welcomes petting on the head and leans in for cheek rubs. She walks out of the kennel to explore the surroundings and remains calm when stroking his body with his hips and tail up. During pick up, he tenses up a little bit and is returned back into the kennel. After placing him back down, he continues to tolerate more petting and cheek rubs, and then he walks out of the kennel and is easily picked up and returned back into the kennel. He is easily held back when closing the door at the end of the interaction. Legend tolerates attention and petting but initially appeared to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He will likely need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior observed, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
