Animal Profile

Rigatoni

Hello, my name is Rigatoni. My animal id is #209589. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/7/2024.

Rigatoni is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Rigatoni in care has been highly stressed in kennel and not acclimating well to the shelter environment. Rigatoni is vocalizing, spinning, screeching and licking his kennel door when handlers pass him and reported to leash bite outside with staff, struggling despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Rigatoni is social with staff members. Medically, Rigatoni is apparently healthy.

It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I am playful and cute! I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5)- Due to Rigatoni's behavior challenges we recommend he is placed in an adult-only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- To reduce Rigatoni mouthy behavior and improve his bite inhibition, redirect his attention to appropriate chew toys whenever he becomes mouthy.Over time, he will learn that gentle interactions are more rewarding. Reinforce gentle behavior with treats and praise, and consistently practice these techniques to help Yoshi develop better bite inhibition and reduce mouthiness. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition- Rigatoni jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve his impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety- Managing his anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety.
