Lilly
Hello, my name is Lilly. My animal id is #247733. I am a female calico cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 2/16/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.
Lilly is on the At-Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. Lilly has a lot of energy and is very quick to overstimulate with handling. She would benefit from interactive play at a safe distance so that she can expend her energy constructively, such as puzzle toys, lick mats, cat dancers and fishing pole type toys, etc. Lilly is social and interested in people but only tolerates brief petting before swatting/nipping, which could potentially result in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid bite/scratch incidents.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I am playful and cute! Lilly is a sweet, social girl and seems to enjoy attention but can be a bit particular about petting and handling. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center and prior bite/scratch history, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: Lilly is a beautiful calico girl only about 3 years old. She seems to have a lot of energy and enjoys to play. Her favorite toys are wand toys, specifically anything with a feather for her to batt her paws at. Lilly plays a bit rough sometimes and I think would do great in a home that can play with her to tire her out, understands cats, and can respect her boundaries.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT 2/24/26 Lilly has a bite/scratch incident that resulted in wounds to the owner's arms and legs (see Known History above for more details). It is possible that Lilly escalated after the owner bent down to pick up a towel from the floor and the sudden movement or close approach may have triggered Lilly to behave defensively. Due to the limited information provided, it is unclear if Lilly has a history of displaying similar behaviors. Lilly is displaying conflicted behaviors or may be intimidated by human hands. She lunges, hisses, or swats at the den door when removing the den cover or when the assessor reaches close with their finger at the door; however, when reaching into the den with the scratcher tool, she leans in hard and rolls onto her side. 2/18/26 FB73 Lilly is laying in her den, poking her head out, eyes wide and pupils very dilated as the handler approaches. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, she leans into it, head bunting and rolling around while she is pet with the tool. When the handler goes to open the kennel door, she freezes, beginning to lip lick. The door is closed again, and petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, and she again leans in, head bunts, and allows petting on the head and cheeks with the tool. 2/25/26 ACFR When he kennel door opened, Lilly ran out of her den to greet the handler. She happily ate squeeze up and allowed pets on the head with the scratcher tool. When starting to pet down the back with the tool, she hissed and batted at the tool. She continued to eat more squeeze up and tolerated head pets with the tool. 2/27/26 Vol. Lilly was inside her den and poked her head out to sniff at treats on scratcher tool. She came all the way out of den, standing with her body slightly crouched and her tail low behind her. She gave a low growl and swatted the scratcher tool. When the tool was withdrawn, she ate the treats and looked around for more. She growled again when I lifted my hand to offer another treat. When treat was tossed through kennel door, she ate it readily. When offered a feather wand, she initially swatted hard, then gradually began to paw at it more playfully, appearing slightly less tense. 3/3/26 Vol. Came right up to the front of the kennel for attention. Able to pet her by hand for a few minutes. Ate two Squeeze-ups from the clicker. Also ate some tuna. She enjoyed swatting at the cat dancer but got a bit overstimulated. Ended interaction after that to avoid FAS. *Enrichment Notes continued in GAN*
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Sweet,Playful,People oriented,Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Very high energy level,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Lilly is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior, we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance. Lilly has a bite/scratch incident that resulted in wounds to the owner's arms and legs (see Known History above for more details). It is possible that Lilly escalated after the owner bent down to pick up a towel from the floor and the sudden movement or close approach may have triggered Lilly to behave defensively. Lilly is an active cat who would benefit from increased mental and physical stimulation to appropriately direct her energy. We recommend using fishing pole-type toys as they allow for vigorous and stimulating exercise. Puzzle feeders will also keep Lilly engaged and exercise her brain in addition to her body.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to bite/scratch history and potential to escalate.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Lilly is at the front of the kennel as the assessor approaches, head bunting the kennel door and extending her paws outside of the bars towards the assessor to solicit attention. When the kennel door is opened, she allows petting on the head and cheeks, leaning in and head bunting, but turns and nips at the assessor's hand after a few seconds. She continues to solicit attention, leaning her body against the side wall of the kennel and head bunting the kennel bars. Petting is attempted again and she allows some more brief petting on the head and cheeks before again turning to nip and bat my hand. Assessor attempts play with a feather wand and Lilly immediately engages in play, pouncing, batting, chasing, and catching the toy.
