Animal Profile

Rice Krispies

Hello, my name is Rice Krispies. My animal id is #232225. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 7/16/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Rice Krispies is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. Rice Krispies has remained highly fearful throughout, noted to have a tense body, whale eye, and escalate to snapping. During his medical intake he was also reported to flail and had to be sedated. When attempting to leash or walk, he will avoid eye contact with handler, shows no interest in treats, will retreat, whale eyes up, has a tense low body, growls, and again, will escalate to snapping. In one recent incident, Rice Krispies is reported to snap at the leash while in kennel and catches the handler's hand in the process. He has not warmed up to staff but will occasionally eat treats. Medically, he apparently has a wound.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

Date of intake:: 7/16/2025

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history

Date of assessment:: 7/17/2025

Summary:: During intake, Rice Krispies was noted to be snapping at the microchip scanner, tense bodied and fearful. When brought into the assessment, handler noted he was whale-eyed, tense and snapped at leash when attempting to be removed from kennel. While in behavior room Rice Krispies remained tense and fearful. Noted to maintain his distance from the handler while showing whale eye. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed and previous escalation to snapping Rice Krispies is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 7/21/25: Rice Krispies is curled up in the back of his kennel. He attempts to seek exit as door is opened. When handler attempts to leash he snaps at the leash and continues to retreat. He dodges it a couple times, and snaps at it a couple times, almost catching handler hand. Treats and squeakers were unsuccessful at luring him. Handler was able to pre-clip lasso him and take him out for a walk in the yard. He remains distant from handler with a neutral body. He is returned to kennel without issue. 7/19/25: Rice Krispies is lying down in kennel sleeping when handler approaches. Handler tosses some treats and he sniffs them and attempts to eat them but eventually spits the treat out. Handler presents the leash and Rice Krispies jumps up high in kennel snapping towards the leash. Handler retreats the leash and gives him a moment before attempting a few more times. Handler is able to leash him slowly with a pre-clipped leash as Rice Krispies is growling. With the leash on, Rice Krispies retreats to the back of the kennel, whale eyed, tense and his body lowered. Handler offers a few treats and he remains tense and whale eyed. Sniff the treats but not taking them. Handler stands out of view with the kennel door open and he refuses to move forward. After a minute or so, the handler removes the leash and the interaction is ended. 7/18/25: Rice Krispies is reported to snap at the leash while in kennel and catches the handler's hand in the process. 07/17/25: (For Assessment) Rice Krispies is laying whale eyed in middle of kennel. He shows no interest in treats. When kennel door opens, Rice Krispies goes into a sit position, remains whale-eyed. When attempting to leash, he is avoidant and initially snapped at the leash. Handler is able to 'lasso' Rice Krispies, he exits with low leash pressure. On walk Rice Krispies remains somewhat stiff bodied, loose leash. When verbally cued Rice Krispies avoids any possible eye contact with handler and shows no interest in treats. After the assessment is attempted he is walked back to kennel, a hook is used to remove leash.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Rice Krispies so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to how uncomfortable Rice Krispies is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope Partner: Rice Krispies has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/Touch sensitivity: Rice Krispies has growled and snapped when he has been attempted to be handled, showing discomfort with touch.. It is important to avoid touching Dog's Rice Krispies at this time. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Rice Krispies to be more comfortable with this. Please see hand-out on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful/Potential for Defensive aggression: Rice Krispies gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Rice Krispies, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Rice Krispies to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see hand-out on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
