Raina is at risk due to behavior concerns in her previous caretaker's home. Raina was reported to have engaged in an altercation initiated by the other resident dog. As both dogs were holding on to one another, the caretaker attempted to separate the dogs and received bites to both hands, leaving minor puncture wounds. Raina's caretaker reported that she can be affectionate and social with familiar people, is fearful of strangers, and enjoys duck jerky treats. Medically, Raina is apparently healthy.

Pre-Screener Form Raina is at risk due to behavior concerns in her previous caretaker's home. Raina was reported to have engaged in an altercation initiated by the other resident dog. As both dogs were holding on to one another, the caretaker attempted to separate the dogs and received bites to both hands, leaving minor puncture wounds. Raina's caretaker reported that she can be affectionate and social with familiar people, is fearful of strangers, and enjoys duck jerky treats. Medically, Raina is apparently healthy. Raina was surrendered as a stray with a limited history given by her caretaker. Raina's caretaker described her as a sweet dog who loved being scratched, rubbed, and massaged by her person. She is noted to be fearful at times and will lunge at other dogs on walks. During her stay in their care, the resident dog initiated an altercation with Raina. Both dogs bit and held each other; the caretaker attempted to separate both dogs and was bitten on both hands, resulting in superficial punctures. Due to these concerns, we recommend for her to be placed in an adult only home where she can be the only dog through a New Hope rescue partner.

Bite history:: Raina was reported to have engaged in an altercation with the other resident dog (female). The other resident dog was the one who initiated the altercation. Both dogs were "locking" onto each other, and both of the caretaker's hands were punctured by both dogs in the process as they were attempting to separate the dogs. The bites resulted in minor puncture wounds and were reported to be a bite-and-hold. Raina was reported to have snapped and lunged before the altercation escalated.

Summary (7):: 9/17 (KSV): Raina is on her kuranda bed when a handler enters the room. Another dog begins barking and Raina bolts off her bed, barking too. She stops at the front of the kennel and quiets. She perks when she hears a squeaker and takes treats with a soft mouth, carrying it to her bed to eat. When she's done, she returns for more. 9/6 (KSV): Raina is sitting quietly at the front of her kennel when a handler enters the room. She shifts closer to the door when she sees them. Her ears perk at the handler's voice, and she sniffs their offered treat before taking it with a soft mouth. She continues to accept treats gently. One piece is large, and she lies down to chew on it. The handler moves away, ending the interaction.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the reported concerns at the previous caretaker's home, we recommend placing Raina in an adult-only home. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the altercation with the resident dog in the previous home that resulted in a bite to the caretaker, we recommend that Raina be the only dog and not attend dog parks at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Raina be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow her to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing Raina to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior she presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Raina's caretaker reported that she can be fearful. During her intake, she was noted to be stiff-bodied. It is important to always go slow and give her the option to walk away from any social interaction. Raina should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Raina's choice to approach a new person or thing. She would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite history (human) | Bite history (dog): Raina is reported to have engaged in an altercation with the other resident dog, who initiated it. Both holds were biting and holding on to one another. When the caretaker attempted to separate the dogs, they were bitten on both hands, drawing blood and leaving superficial punctures. Anxiety: Raina is reported to have anxiety in the previous home - pacing, whining, and unable to settle. If Raina displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement and force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Raina is reported to lunge at other dogs during walks. Raina may need positive reinforcement, reward-based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
