Animal Profile

Rihanna

Hello, my name is Rihanna. My animal id is #176319. I am a female silver dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 7 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/6/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.

Rihanna is at risk due to behavior reasons. Rihanna has displayed handling/touch sensitivity, high levels of anxiety, and on leash-reactivity in the care centers. She was noted to bark and growl when restrained, as well as on the street when spotting people and other dogs, she pulls towards them. This behavior is not easily redirectable. While being removed from kennel, she has been reported to kennel fight. Rihanna does have a bite history, where another dog charged towards her and a fight broke out but where able to be separated, resulting in a gash on the right ear of the other dog. With handlers, Rihanna remains aloof, not responsive unless she is pet along her backside. She wags her tail briefly but does not approach or seek further interaction. Medically, Rihanna has a mass on. her tail, chronic otitis, and periodontal disease.

Rihanna came to us via owner surrender. Her previous owner describes her as a silly, lazy couch potato. She is seeking her new forever home where she can spend her days lazing around, catching some Z's, and bathing in the sun. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I need a home without cats or small animals. I need a home where there are no other dogs. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.

My medical notes are...

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. Summary (5):: 2/28/25- Rihanna is at the front of her kennel barking when handler approaches, she is easily leashed and she cage fights as she exits the room long with the pop up crates in the hallway. Handler moved her to the other side of them to avoid crates and Rihanna just was pulling to go for a walk. She is taken for a street walk. She moderately pulls towards various spots to sniff and will occasionally walk on a loose leash. When waiting for the light a MOP was walking their dog behind Rihanna, she turned and started to bark and pull towards the other dog. Handler crossed the adjacent street to avoid the dog. Once across the street Rihanna followed the command to sit and she gently took treats from their hand. In the park she will pull hard towards different spots to sniff. When she saw dogs running a field she would stare at them. Handler bent down to present a treat and got her attention. While waiting for another dog to pass ahead, handler had her sit facing away and fed her treats. She would look at the other dog 2-3 times while they passed but handler presented more treats and would go back and forth watching then a treat. While waiting for the light to change, handler pets her sides she lifts her head back and sways her head back and forth with a grin. She just sniffed around when returning to the building. She was easily clipped and attempt to cage fight when returning to kennel. Handler tossed treats into her kennel ands she readily went in without further issue.

When returning to kennel she attempts to cage fight but hops right into her kennel. 12/18/24: Rihanna is standing at the front of her kennel with a loose body. She is leashed and easily brought outside. In the pen, Rihanna relives herself multiple times and sniffs the ground. She is very interested in watching the pigeons in other pens but does not bark or lunge at them. Rihanna is not interested in squeaker sounds but shows some interest in stuffed toys. Rihanna begins standing at the door to the pen so she is easily releashed and brought back inside. 12/17/24: Rihanna is observed to be standing at the front of her kennel tense and barking when the room is empty.

She is easily leashed and allows handler to pick her up and place on the ground as she was in a top kennel. She is walked on the street where she walks slightly ahead of handler but will come when called and lean into pets. When returning to kennel, she notices another dog in the kennel and begins to bark, pulling in their direction. Handler does not feel comfortable picking her up while barking so she is moved to an empty bottom kennel. She goes into the kennel without issue. 12/8/24: Rihanna is standing in the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She takes treats from handler and allows leashing but throws herself out of her kennel once opened, handler catches her and does their best to lower her as safely as possible. She vocalizes at the dogs as she exits her room and is taken to the street. Once on the street she continues to bark and vocalize at dogs while also pulling towards them, she is unable to be redirected. She pulls moderately and walks past people on the street without issue. She's then brought inside for an assessment. During her assessment she refuses to take treats and while initially hesitant to allow collaring, tolerates it after a few tries.
