Animal Profile

Plum

Hello, my name is Plum. My animal id is #68104. I am a female brown brindle dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 3 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/5/2019.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Plum is at risk for behavior and medical concerns. Although Plum displays some social behavior and solicits attention, she does appear to exhibit fearful behavior when introduced or exposed to new situations where she has been observed to tremble, remain tense and is easily distracted. Plum exhibits anxious behavior during her interactions in the care center, where she has been observed to pant, whine, pace and is easily distracted. She has been diagnosed with dental disease, diarrhea and osteoarthritis that will need follow up care.

You may know me from such films as...

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Plum is just as sweet as a plum! She rested her head in my lap as I rubbed her ears and cheeks, then half-closed her eyes and drifted off into some sort of doggie nirvana. When I stopped, she softly solicited more attention (which I gladly gave her). Plum is a sweet, gentle soul who seems most happy just quietly hanging out with her human friends. She walked lovely on a leash and seems to be housebroken. She's at a great age, too....post-puppy energy, but with enough zest to be a constant companion. If you're looking for a sweet, low-key pooch who'll always be at your side, then Plum may be just the one for you! Come and meet her today at the Brooklyn ACC shelter, where she's patiently awaiting her fur-ever home. A staff member writes: If you have an old soul and would rather lounge around then Plum is for you! Plum's calm personality is a great fit for those lazy days. Of course, she loves treats and can't get enough of them so make sure you have plenty. She loves attention and would rather be the only princess in the home. She will easily find her way into your heart. Come to Brooklyn Animal Care Centers and meet your new family member!!!

My medical notes are...

Weight: 66 lbs

It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary:: Plumb was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. Here at the Care Center, Plumb is reactive when greeting novel dogs and has been muzzled as a precaution when off-leash. When muzzled she attempts to jump on the novel dog while growling, but is unable to do so due to handler intervention. Due to the reactivity displayed towards novel dogs while here at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that Plum be the only resident dog at this time. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Plumb associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats. 7/8: When off leash at the Care Centers, Plum charges the gate and hard barks at the novel male. She darts back and forth in front of the gate snarling. The male also becomes reactive and both dogs are successfully separated and an off-leash introduction is not conducted. 7/12: Due to Plum’s previous behavior in Playgroup, Plum was muzzle prior to an on-leash greet. Plum continued to display a stiff body, before focusing on the muzzle. She attempts to jump on the greeter while growling but was slowed down by handlers. 7/30: Plum’s behavior remains the same after recovering from CIRDC.

Date of intake:: 7/5/2019

Summary:: Allowed all handling

Date of initial:: 7/5/2019

Summary:: Whale eyed, tucked tail, tolerated handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: Plum has been observed to exhibit a medium level of energy during her interactions in the care center. We cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment, but we recommend that she be provided daily mental and physical stimulation as an outlet for her energy.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Plum's overall timidity, fearful behavior and anxiety, we feel it would be best for her to be placed in a stable, adult-only home environment, as loud noises and sudden movements may startle her. It is advised that the new adopters should be able to exercise appropriate and safe management when handling Plum, allowing her to acclimate and decompress at her own pace. Force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing or exposing Plum to new and unfamiliar situations, as well as utilizing guidance from a qualified, professional trainer/behaviorist. Recommend no dog parks- Due to the concerning behaviors that Plum has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG BEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Plum should not visit dog parks until she has had the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills when interacting with other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Plum receive dog socialization sessions under the supervision of a certified trainer or behaviorist. Single-pet home: Due to Plum's concerning behaviors in playgroup (see DOG-DOG BEHAVIOR) indicates that she is uncomfortable around other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Plum be placed in a home with no other dogs until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed once she has adequate time to decompress from the shelter environment. The Behavior Department recommends reward-based, force-free training only to desensitize and counter-condition Plum using toys or treats to help her associate other dogs with positive experiences.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Although Plum displays some social behavior and solicits attention, she does appear to exhibit fearful behavior when introduced or exposed to new situations where she has been observed to tremble, remain tense and is easily distracted. Plum should never be forced to interact or approach if she is not comfortable and positive association should be paired with anything she displays fear toward. Please refer to the handout for Decompression period as well as the handout on Fear. Anxiety: Plum exhibits anxious behavior during her interactions in the care center, where she has been observed to pant, whine, pace and is easily distracted. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
