Animal Profile

Nuno

Hello, my name is Nuno. My animal id is #248740. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/31/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too active.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Nuno is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Nuno has been observed to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to jump up on the handler and mouth their clothing. Recently Nuno has been observed to jump up on handlers persistently and mount them. This behavior is difficult to redirect. Nuno is reported to be receptive to treats. Medically, Nuno is apparently healthy.

Nuno has displayed concerning behaviors in care since arriving at MACC, particularly involving his lack of impulse control and capacity for arousal when interacting with handlers. Nuno is reported by his former owners to persistently jump in a social manner and is difficult to redirect, this behavior also manifests during walks in the form of On-Leash Reactivity. He has also escalated to mouthing handlers at points when reaching a high state of arousal. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. A volunteer writes: Nuno is all about wiggles and snuggles. This little boy loves attention and cuddles. He jumped up several times during the interaction, but it was all social and friendly, complete with a wiggly butt. He leaned into staff for more petting, sat nicely for treats, and walked right by staff. Overall, he was a highly social, happy, friendly boy.

Summary (7):: 4/18/26: Nuno is at the front of his kennel with a loose body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. During the elevator ride, Nuno jumps on the handler and solicits pets; as they give him pets, Nuno begins to grasp on to the handler’s hips and humps them. He continues as they exit the elevator; when Nuno bites on the handler’s sweater and PPE gown, they straight arm their leash and gets him off of them. On the street, Nuno walks ahead with mild leash tension; he doesn’t react to dogs or passersby. The handler stops and Nuno jumps on them again; the handler softly pets Nuno. However, Nuno again humps the handler in the same manner and bite their gown; when the handler straight arms him, he bites on their sleeve cuff. Once Nuno is off of them, he attempts to jump on them again, but the handler straight arms the leash; when he looks at their ankles, the handler straight arms the leash again, and Nuno eventually stops. The handler tosses treats, and Nuno shows slight interest. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Nuno to his kennel 4/11/26: Nuno is lying down on his kuranda bed as handler approaches his kennel. Nuno then slowly approaches the front with a neutral body and slight tail wag, he is then easily leashed and removed from his kennel. As he's exiting the kennel room, he walks alongside the handler and is taken out for a street walk. While out on the street he would walk on a loose leash with the handler, not reacting towards any dogs or people in the distance. As handler would call his name, he would turn towards the handler and firmly grip their leg using his front two paws. Handler would turn to their side and continue the walk with ease. Afterwards, he is then brought back inside and returned to his kennel with ease. 4/5/26: Staff reported when in the yard with Nuno, he jumped up and grabbed the handler with his front paws before attempting to mouth their arms. 4/2/26: (For assessment) Nuno is loose bodied in kennel, Nuno stands exuberantly on hindlegs, drops for a treat offered and is easily leashed. Nuno pulls hard out of kennel, once on side walk Nuno pulls moderately. He allows gently petting of torso, is loose bodied. When a treat is offered Nuno jumps on handler several times, loose bodied but persistently. Nuno is walked to office for assessment, he starts to pant and approach handlers exuberantly, jumping on them frequently. After assessment Nuno is walked to kenel and he enters without issue.

Summary:: Persistently jumps on staff, nibbles on hands, resists restraint.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Nuno is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Nuno.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the low threshold for arousal we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Poor Impulse Control: During his assessment Nuno was observed to persistently jump on handlers and was very difficult to redirect. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control him impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Poor Impulse Control. Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: During his assessment Nuno became aroused and escalated to mouthing handlers sweater while jumping up seeking treats. This is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Nuno's teeth make contact with skin). Please see handout on Mouthiness. Separation Anxiety/Anxiety: During Nuno's assessment he was observed to have difficulty settling and would pant and pace, his former owners also report noticing these behaviors as well as reporting Nuno suffers from separation anxiety. we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: Nuno's former owners report that he is reactive on leash and will pull/jump toward strangers approaching them on the street during walks. Nuno may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Low Threshold for Arousal: Throughout the majority of Nuno's assessment, he was reported to persistently jump up on the handler, and mouth their clothing, this was very difficult to redirect at the time. During his most recent assessment, Nuno was observed to mount handlers. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Nuno to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Nuno. Please see handout on Arousal.
