Animal Profile

Luna

Hello, my name is Luna. My animal id is #246103. I am a desexed female gray dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/8/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Luna is at risk due to behavioral concerns. She is a young, energetic dog who can become quickly over-aroused during socialization sessions, resulting in behaviors such as mouthing or biting at staff members' shoes, air snapping, and jumping on people. Luna is highly food-motivated and has demonstrated significant potential for training and behavior modification. Luna also appears highly stressed in her kennel and is often heard vocalizing for extended periods. Medically, she is a healthy dog.

Luna is an owner surrender who is looking for a home where she can finally settle in, feel secure, and stay close to her people. She has a bright, affectionate personality and really comes alive when she has company and a bit of playtime in her day. Personality Luna is social, loving, and full of personality. She bonds quickly with people and enjoys being involved in whatever is going on around her. Whether she's playing on her own for a bit or following you from room to room, she really just wants to be included. She can be enthusiastic in her greetings and may jump up when excited, but it's all friendly energy and excitement to connect. She already knows some basic cues and enjoys working for treats, especially when things are upbeat and encouraging. She responds best to gentle structure and consistency rather than anything too strict or overwhelming. Out and About Luna enjoys her walks and moves with moderate pulling, more from excitement than anything else. She doesn't react to people or other dogs she passes and is generally focused on getting out and exploring. With continued guidance, she should keep improving her leash skills, especially as she learns to settle into a routine. Social Behavior In new spaces, Luna is moderately social and may be a little distracted at first, but she warms up with encouragement and engagement. She likes to approach when called and can be playful once she's comfortable. She tends to feel better when interactions are calm and not overly restrictive, and she enjoys having space to move and engage at her own pace. Home Life Luna would thrive in a home that offers structure, companionship, and positive reinforcement. She enjoys being around people and does best when she isn't left alone for long periods without support. She is crate trained for short stretches and will benefit from continued routines that help her feel secure and relaxed. Things to Know Luna may need a little extra patience with things like grooming, nail trims, and car rides, as these can make her a bit uneasy. With calm reassurance and consistency, she continues to show how affectionate, smart, and people-focused she really is. Fun Fact Luna is happiest when she's right in the middle of the action, playing, exploring, or just sticking close to her favorite humans 🐾

Summary:: 5/3: Luna greets F LMB dog at the gate with a soft body, relaxed face, lowers her head and bounces away. 5/10: Luna stands a few feet from the gate as a F MMB dog approaches. She pounces towards the dog meeting her face to face. The other dog reacts and Luna is easily walked away.

Summary (1):: Luna is a very active and playful dog who loves being wherever people are, always seeking company and attention. She enjoys running around and staying busy, especially with squishy toys—though she has a habit of chewing through most of them. When it comes to grooming, Luna prefers warm water but really doesn’t like having her nails trimmed. On walks, she shows mild to moderate pulling on the leash and typically goes out once or twice a day for about 10–15 minutes. She is crate trained and uses a large crate for up to four hours, but she doesn’t always behave well in it. Car rides can be challenging, as Luna tends to get sick and may cry or try to move toward you if she’s not seated near someone. She knows several cues, including sit, paw, stop, lay down, and “good night,” and her energetic, affectionate personality makes her a fun and lively companion.

Summary (4):: 6/2: Luna is heard crying loudly in her kennel during the afternoon. She is provided with a toy in a paper bag with some treats, which she immediately engages with. She is easily leashed with a treat and goes straight to her lickimat to be rope harnessed. She is brought over to do a gate greet with another male large mixed-breed dog. Luna sits at a distance before greeting him with a neutral body. She is easily walked away. She sees a familiar staff member walking on the street and greets them, jumping up all 4 feet in the air. She settles on her own sitting and is rewarded. Luna checks in frequently with her handler and takes treats nicely. She accepts pets remaining calm and returns without issue. 5/28: Luna is easily leashed with a jerky treat and goes directly to her lickimat to be rope harnessed. She keeps her feet on the floor, walking nicely with her handler. She ignores people in passing up the block and will sit intermittently, looking for treats. When returning, she alert barks at a MOP but is easily moved along. She pulls back to the kennel.

Summary (5):: 5/27: Luna is easily leashed with a treat and brought to the yard to engage with an enrichment circle. She runs over and begins to engage with a puzzle box, pulling a squeaky toy from inside and running about the yard, zooming and play bowing over enrichment items. She entertains herself, switching between the toy, snuffle mat and puzzle. She is brought on a relief walk and returns without issue. 5/20: Luna is lying in her kennel on approach. She jumps up when she sees the handler. A treat is used to lure her head down, and she is easily leashed. She comes into the meet and greet room and goes to her lickimat, allowing to be harnessed. She is brought to the yard where there is an ice block waiting for her. She engages with it, slowly licking and chewing at the block. She is easily distracted but will return to the block. At the end of the session, she returns without issue. 5/13 Luna was brought into the yard where a variety of enrichment activities had been set up throughout the space. After a drag leash was secured, Luna immediately began engaging with hidden treats placed beneath a yoga mat. She then explored and worked through the snuffle mat, followed by engaging with a puzzle feeder, which she successfully completed. Throughout the session, Luna remained soft-bodied and relaxed with the handlers while actively participating in enrichment. 5/7: A lickimat is put on the back of the door in meet & greet to help distract Luna as she is being rope harnessed. Treats are used to secure the slip lead, and she is brought into the meet & greet & directed to the mat. She stands still, licking the mat as she is harnessed. The door is opened, and she busts out exuberantly. She begins sniffing outside before throwing herself up at the handler, becoming entangled in the leash. They keep her moving as they walk. She will intermittently offer to sit, and if not rewarded, jump up at the staff. She becomes mouthy when trying to remove the harness, but then settles down and returns without further issue.

Summary (6):: 5/3: Luna is jumping up and down at the kennel front. Once secured, she walks out of the kennel. She is brought into the yard and let off-leash. She jumps up on the handler sitting on the bench, then runs over to the second staff member, biting at his shoelaces. She is switched to the slip lead and brought on a walk. She pulls to the end of the leash and jets from side to side on the walk. She returns without issue.   5/01 Luna comes to the front of her kennel as staff approaches. She begins jumping up at the leash as the staff tries to loop their leash around her e-collar. Another staff member distracts her by presenting a treat. Together, they are able to leash her and take her out of the kennel. Before leaving on a walk, a third staff member attempts to clean the feces off the inside of Luna's cone. At first, Luna squirms and tries to jump towards the staff's face, but again, she is distracted with treats, and her cone is successfully cleaned. On the walk, Luna is mostly occupied with smelling her surroundings. She occasionally stops and tries to jump on the staff member not holding the leash, but she is easily corrected and led back inside the building to her kennel without issue. 4/30 Handler brought Luna to the yard and secured a drag leash. During the interaction, Luna became over-aroused and ran up to the handler, biting down on the handler’s shoe but immediately releasing. Luna then ran to the opposite side of the yard before returning to the handler and again biting down on the handler’s shoe. A slip leash was then secured, and Luna was brought back inside. 4/26 Luna is easily leashed and is taken out on a walk. On the walk, she intermittently stops to sniff and then darts forward. Up the street a piece of a leaf blows on the sidewalk, and she pounces at it, loses sight of it then turns and snaps towards handler's left hand. She is immediately stiff-armed and she sits, and looks up at the handler, focusing on the handler while panting. She whips her head around a bit and snaps at the leash just a bit above her head once. While sitting, she finally settles enough to continue walking, she keeps looking for things blowing in the wind and walking erratically, crossing in front of both the handler and other staff members, and slowing down and darting forward. She is easily returned to her kennel.

Summary (7):: 4/21: Luna is easily leashed and pulls through the hall. At the door, she is tolerant of being rope-harnessed. She walks nicely with the help of the harness. They sit at the bench out front, and Luna joins the handler on the bench. She leans into pets with an open mouth, panting. She looks over at the handlers and mouths towards her face (she does not make contact). Handler stands, and Luna pulls through the flowers. They continue on the walk & she returns without issue. 4/19 Luna is at the front of her kennel when the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and taken out for a walk with another staff member. On the walk, she pulls to random scents, and leaves blowing on the ground. On the way back, she finds an abandoned toy and carries it while shaking it. Luna ultimately accidentally drops it on the way back in. Luna is easily returned to her kennel. 4/14 Luna is at the front of the kennel and is easily leashed and taken on a walk with staff. Luna, on her walk, accepted pets and walked with a loose leash. Staff then took Luna to a yard where she accepted pets and treats. Luna was then taken back to the kennel without any issue. 4/9 Luna was at the front of the kennel when approached with her ears back. Staff slowly leashed Luna and took her on a walk. Staff noticed that, as time went on, Luna softened and walked with a loose leash. Luna was taken back to the kennel with no issue.

Summary:: nervous, but allowed handling

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and mouthiness, we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Luna is noted to have accidents in the house and will likely need guidance with house training. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Basic Manner/Impulse Control: Luna lacks basic manners and impulse control. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: Luna is quick to put their teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy - and ending play or attention whenever Luna puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness and Poor Bite Inhibition. Anxiety: Luna is reported to become anxious when left alone. If Luna displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. Low threshold for arousal: Luna is easily over aroused when let off leash in the yard. She escalated to biting onto staff members shoelaces, pants. Over arousal can tip into aggression. We recommend creating a calm, structured environment with consistent routines and clear boundaries. Avoid rough play or situations that trigger overexcitement and instead reinforce calm behaviors with rewards. Teaching cues like “settle” or “go to mat” can help redirect energy constructively. Regular mental enrichment, controlled exercise, and decompression time are key. Please see the handout on Arousal.
