Animal Profile

Evander

Hello, my name is Evander. My animal id is #255497. I am a male bronze dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 7 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 5/27/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Evander is at risk due to behavioral concerns. In the Care Centers, Evander was initially social with staff and would allow petting and take treats. He had one instance of mounting a staff member but did not repeat the behavior. More recently, while on a walk, Evander lunged at a staff member, biting and holding onto their sweater and tearing the fabric. Medically, Evander has alopecia, dental disease, chronic otitis, and is underweight.

Medically, Evander has alopecia, dental disease, chronic otitis, and is underweight. Evander was brought to the Care Centers as a stray, so his behavior history in a home environment is unknown. While in the Care Centers, Evander was noted to be social with staff, though he would occasionally mount them. More recently, Evander lunged at a staff member and grabbed their sweater with his mouth, releasing only after the fabric tore. Evander would do best in an adult-only home through a New Hope Partner that can safely manage his behaviors using positive reinforcement techniques. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. A Volunteer Wrote: Little surprise that Evander is a volunteer favorite: He's got everything going for him! He wants to play with everyone, which sure is fun to watch. Dogs on either side of the fence get play bows and every trick he can think of to entice them to interact with him; humans get the same amount of affection exhibited with his bouncy, playful affection. The comments on his walking log are some of the best we've ever seen because everyone agrees he's phenomenal in every way (he's also an amazing leash walker, calm and steady). Please, come meet him for yourself and be his forever fan!

Summary (6):: 6/27/26: (Movement) Evander is at the front of his crate heavily panting and barking persistently at the handler. Handler uses a treat to place the handlers loop over him, handler then feeds a 2nd leash through the main leash and he is successfully double leashed. He is then removed from his crate and walks forward with no issue. He is then brought downstairs via the elevator and leashes are kept tight due to previous incident. He readily enters his new kennel and a hook is used to removed the leashes, interaction was then ceased. 6/27/26: As handler approaches Evander's crate - the bottom part is pulled out and he is persistently barking towards the handler. Once handler attempts to leash, Evander would attempt to mouth the leash but is easily re-guided with a treat. Once leashed, he is removed and taken out for a street walk. During his walk, he would pick up a soft toy and would walk on a loose leash alongside the handler, not reacting towards any dogs or people. He relieves himself with ease and is then returned to the shelter. As handler goes upstairs, his crate wasn't ready so handler stands in the hallway with him. Evander would begin to persistently bark towards the other pop-up crates, and allows 2 staff members to walk past with no issue. Shortly, another staff member walks past and Evander quickly lunges and grabs their sweater and grips it. Handler pulls Evander back, but he wouldn't let go of the sweater, he's then pulled back once more and the sweater ends up being ripped and he is brought back to his crate shortly after. The bite didn't make contact towards anything other than the sweater.

Summary (7):: 6/24/26: Evander is observed to mount the handler as they were seated on the bench. 6/22/26: Evander greets the handler with a loose and wiggly body. He is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. While on walk, he pulls lightly and stops at a few places to sniff and investigate. He looks back at the handler a couple of times, and the handler rewards him with treats. He accepts treats with a soft mouth. He is returned to the kennel with no issue. 6/14/26: It is reported via whiteboard that Evander barks at anyone who looks at him on the streets. 6/12/26: Evander is standing at the front of his crate wagging his tail with a loose, wiggly body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought out for a street walk. Throughout the walk, he will sniff various spots - at times pulling mildly but otherwise walking with a loose leash slightly ahead of the handler. He checks in occasionally with the handler and accepts pets with a soft body. He is brought back to the shelter and returned to his crate without issue. 6/8/26: Evander gets a handler at the front of his crate with a loose and wiggly body. He is easily leashed, pulled from the crate, and taken for a street walk. While on the walk, Evander walked next to his handler with a slack leash. He accepted treats with a soft mouth and leaned into the handler when getting petted. Handler experienced no mounting on the walk. He was returned to the kennel with no issue. 6/7/26: It is reported via whiteboard that Evander might be house-trained. 6/5/26: Evander is reported to be persistently attempting to mount; however is manageable with treats. 6/4/26: Evander is at the front of his crate with a wiggly body; he is easily leashed and brought out of the room. On the street, Evander walks ahead with mild to no leash tension; he doesn’t react to dogs or people. Evander mostly walks around and relieves himself. He is then brought inside for his assessment (see notes). Afterwards, Evander is returned to his kennel.

Date of initial:: 5/27/2026

Summary:: Head whipped and snapped, did not allow exam, opted to sedate

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Evander so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 06/226/26: While on a walk, Evander lunged and bit a staff member's sweater and did not let go. He eventually ripped the sweater.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to resource guarding we recommend a home with no young children. Place with a New Hope partner: Evander should go to a New Hope Partner due to his behavior.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Social hyperarousal,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: During his assessment, Evander was observed to become tense and move away with a toy in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Evander's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Social hyperarousal: Evander was noted to mount staff when interacting with them in a social manner. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Evander impulse control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Evander lunge bit and held onto a staff member's sweater when they walked past him. He let go when the sweater ripped. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Evander to check in with his adopter when he sees his triggers.
