Animal Profile

Nacho

Hello, my name is Nacho. My animal id is #244581. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 12/30/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Nacho is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Nacho arrived at the Care Center as a stray. Upon intake Nacho was noted to be exuberant, but allowed handling and tolerated tasks for medical exam. Nacho has displayed a decreasing threshold for arousal and intense resource guarding at times. During his handling assessment Nacho was observed to become tense and hover over the toy when the 'assess-a-hand' attempted to remove the item in his position. Recently Nacho has also been observed to be growl, snap, and bare teeth at handlers when they approach his kennel without a specified item of value in his possession. Nacho has also been reported to leash bite at times, in one instance continued to jump at snap after letting go of the leash. When interacting with staff on walks, Nacho is treat receptive and social. Medically, Nacho is noted to have a small skin mass but it otherwise apparently healthy.

Nacho arrived to the Manhattan Animal Care Center as a stray/impound and is still a bit of a mystery to us. What we do know is that he is an absolute sweetheart - tail wagging constantly, gentle, and a total snuggle bug. He is eager to please and ready to learn with a patient person who can spend time on training and bonding. My Ideal Home A calm, adult-only home with someone who has the time and patience to work on basic training and build trust. Nacho would thrive with consistent, positive reinforcement and predictable routines. Because he can be possessive of food, toys, and bedding, a single-pet home or careful, gradual introductions to other animals are recommended unless you have experience managing resource guarding. Good with Kids? No - Nacho would do best in a home with only adult humans. He's happiest in a calm environment without young children around. Good with Other Pets? Not recommended without careful management. He doesn't always like to share food, toys, or bedding, so he may show resource guarding around other animals. With slow, supervised introductions and an experienced adopter, there may be possibilities, but a single-pet home is the safest fit right now.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Nacho so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to poor impulse control and and on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Nacho was observed to become tense and hover over a toy in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Nacho's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Nacho has been observed to jump up on the handler. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. On Leash Reactivity: Nacho has been observed to become tense and hard stare towards other dogs while on leash. Nacho will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Nacho has been observed to bite the leash intensely. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
