Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Date of intake:: 5/22/2026

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, With history

Bite history:: 5/21/26: Officers got a call about a dog bite incident. The owner had called 911 for medical attention and to have T'challa taken away. According to the officers, the owner was inside the home at around 11 PM when they heard the two dogs fighting. The owner attempted to intervene, and as a result, T'Challa bit them on the left thumb, leaving a puncture wound. The owner then placed T'Challa inside a crate before calling 911. EMS treated the owner on the scene and they declined to be taken to a medical facility.

Other Notes:: As the owner was speaking to the police, they stated that T'Challa had been getting more and more aggressive towards the other resident dog, but this is the first time an injury has occurred. The owner surrendered T'Challa due to his escalating behavior and the bite incident.

Date of assessment:: 5/28/2026

Summary:: T'Challa arrived at MACC following a bite incident in the home towards the resident dog. When the owner went to break up the altercation, T'Challa redirected and bit the owner on the thumb, leaving a puncture wound. Due to the bite incident T'Challa is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is limited prior dog-to-dog history recorded. T'Challa is reported to have a bite incident when finder was removing him from a dog fight. 06/04/26 T'Challa is introduced to a novel female. He approaches the gate with a tense forward frame, high-flagged tail, and lip licks. He remains at gate with a forward frame throughout.

Summary (7):: 5/31/26: Tchalla was at front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approached. He was easily leashed and pulled from kennel and taken for a street walk. While on walk he tries numerous times to jump up on and mount handler. Handler responded with “absolutely not” and rewarded him with treats when he got all four on the floor. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 5/30/26: (AM walk) T'Challa is at front of kennel with neutral body, when leashing he tries to push his head out, but is easily leashed with a treat lure. He exits kennel with a hard pull, when close the exit of the room he turns 180 from the leash pressure towards the handler, turns back toward hallway and exits to yard. In yard T'challa sniffs areas of interest, maintains loose leash, relieves him self. T'Challa does not attempt to mount as previously observed. After some time T'challa is walked back to MACC and kennel, enters without issue. 5/28/26: It is reported that T'Challa was mounting the handler persistently with his arms wrapped around their leg and nails pressing in. This behavior occurred several times and was not able to be redirected. 5/26/26: It is reported on the behavior board that T'Challa is "jumpy when excited". 5/25/26: T'Challa is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail as handler approaches. As handler attempts to leash him the first time, he would avoid the leash. A treat is then presented, and he is then easily leashed and removed from the kennel, where he would begin to snack on kibble that was left on the floor. Once removed from the kennel room, he is taken to the driveway and would walk ahead of the handler with a mild pull. While out in the driveway, he would not react towards any dogs or people and would remain focused on the handler. A treat is presented, and he begins to sit; the treat is tossed, which he takes with ease. T'Challa would then begin to explore and relieve himself; he would remain aloof throughout his walk. Shortly after, he is then easily clipped and returned back to his kennel with ease. 5/22/26: T'Challa is at the front of his kennel soft body and soft wagging tail. He lowers his head and allows leashing. He is walked to the yard where he is neutral body and aloof, sniffing and exploring. Another handerl enters the yard and T'Challa watches the. Handler calls him and he places his front paws on handlers legs. Handler moves back and he does it again (posturing to mount possibly). Handler directs T'Challa to walk around again and he resumes sniffing around. He returns to kennel without issue.

Date of intake:: 5/22/2026

Summary:: Allowed leashing, balked at kennel and needed to be muscled in

Date of initial:: 5/22/2026

Summary:: Tense and panting. Allows handling for exam and most tasks.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on T'Challa so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite incident, we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to the reported aggressive behavior towards the resident dog we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human),Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Bite History (Human/Dog): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Arousal: T'Challa was observed to jump up and mount handlers. This behavior was not easily redirected. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach T'Challa to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
