Animal Profile

Sage

Hello, my name is Sage . My animal id is #250999. I am a desexed male red brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/31/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Sage is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Due to concerning dog behavior Sage displayed in playgroup with a novel dog, she was tested with a fake dog. Sage when greeting the fake dog escalated when the fake dog was moved, biting onto the stomach area, readjusting his grip multiple times, and then holding and shaking. Sage continued to bite, hold, shake, and readjust onto the fake dog while moving around the yard, requiring an air can to disengage as she could not be refocused which may create a serious safety risk around other dogs in the future. Sage in the care center is very affectionate with staff, and loves to pet in there laps. Medically, Sage has an ear infection.

Sage arrived at QACC as a stray with another dog and was initially social with staff but showed kennel reactivity and reluctance to return to his crate. During dog introductions, he displayed tense, stalking behavior toward a female dog, preventing direct interaction. In a controlled test with a fake dog, he initially appeared neutral but quickly escalated-charging, then repeatedly biting, holding, and shaking the fake dog. Although friendly with people, we recommend he be placed in a home through one of our new hope partners.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/10/26 Due to Sage's behavior during his greet on 05/09/26, he is introduced to a fake dog. Sage explores the adjoining yard with a neutral frame. As the gate is opened, he crosses over to the next yard, approaching the fake dog with high-flagged tail and begins to sniff its genital area. As he sniffs the fake dog is knocked over and he circles and sniffs again. As soon as the handler moves the fake dog, Sage bites onto the stomach area, readjusting the bite multiple times before holding and shaking. Sage continues to bite, hold, and shake the fake dog as he moves around the yard, readjusting to bite hold and shake along one of the shoulders. Air can was used to remove Sage from the fake dog. 05/09/26 Sage is introduced to a novel female. As soon as he enters the yard, he begins to hard stare at the female with a square, tense frame and will stalk forward slowly. The female does not approach the gate and is Sage continues to fixate on the female as he is walked out of the yard.

Summary (7):: 05/26/26 (Trainer Note): Sage is standing at the front of his kennel panting moderately as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. He struggles to focus and jumps up repeatedly onto handlers, intermittently mouthing. The handler works with Sage on sitting and breathing and he is intermittently successful, but runs off to jump on the other handlers if there is more than a few seconds between his sitting and the reinforcer being delivered. Sage is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 5/16/26: Sage was at back of kennel when handler approached. As handler opened door he came forward and was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. When Sage saw a dog she would pull towards the dog and handler was able to redirect him with treats and a squeaker. Sage saw one dog on the street that was barking and he pulled hard towards that dog while barking herself. Handler used treats and the squeaker and was able to get to move away in the other direction. Sage was returned to kennel with no issue. 5/9/26: Sage is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be quickly leashed, and he pulls hard on the way to the play yard for play group. Along the way, he is nervous of going up the stairs so he had to be taken to the elevator. In the yard, he greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body and begins muzzle punch at the gate while barking and vocalizing. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He then pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 5/3/26: Sage is reported to be kennel reactive. 4/20/26 Sage was sitting up in kennel with wagging tail. He attempted to push past handler when the kennel door was opened but was able to be leashed. He leaned into handler in the elevator soliciting pets. He sniffed and explored his surroundings and was returned to kennel easily after. 04/01/26: Sage is noted by acs not wanting to go back into his crate after his walk and will pull and away and attempt to flee.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Sage be placed in a home with no children (under 13). Single-pet Home/Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Sage has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Sage should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Sage associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. Place with a New Hope partner:Sage arrived at QACC as a stray with another dog and was initially social with staff but showed kennel reactivity and reluctance to return to his crate. During dog introductions, he displayed tense, stalking behavior toward a female dog, preventing direct interaction. In a controlled test with a fake dog, he initially appeared neutral but quickly escalated—charging, then repeatedly biting, holding, and shaking the fake dog. Although friendly with people, we reccomend he be placed in a home through one of our new hope partners.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Sage frequently jumps up on handlers seeking attention and to be picked up, indicating excitement and limited impulse control. Training should focus on reinforcing calm alternatives such as sitting for attention and consistently avoiding reinforcement for jumping to encourage more appropriate greeting behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Anxiety: Sage began to display heavy panting and whining during his assessment. Managing his anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: It noted that when Sage saw a dog she would pull towards the dog and handler was able to redirect him with treats and a squeaker. Sage saw one dog on the street that was barking and he pulled hard towards that dog while barking herself
