Vicenzo
Hello, my name is Vicenzo. My animal id is #226848. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 5/10/2025.
Vicenzo is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. During intake he was social with staff, presenting a loose body with a rapid tail wag, and soliciting attention. He has remained social with handlers throughout his stay, but has been observed to jump up on handlers persistently, head whipping with an open mouth, and attempting to mouth handlers. In one recent instance, he jumped towards handler and mouthed their hand with hard pressure leaving red marks. He continues to be easily redirected with treats as he is food motivated. Vicenzo has also been observed to very intensely kennel fight, sometimes vocalizing loudly, a treat trial only being effective occasionally. On his walks, he is persistently pulling very hard to the point of choking himself. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Summary:: 5/31/25: Vicenzo greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and wagging tail. Off leash, he remains soft but makes attempts to mount.
Summary (3):: 7/27/25: Vincenzo is lying down in kennel. He stands up when handler approaches and remains at the front with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. He pulls hard out of the kennel room and tries to go for a treat on the ground. He ignores the kennels and pop up crates as he passes them. Vincenzo is brought to the street where he pulls hard ahead of the handler. Handler stops walking and Vincenzo continues pulling forward. Handler calls him over and he is given a treat. After this is done a few times, Vincenzo then walks with a loose leash or just ahead of the handler. Vincenzo will occasionally check in with the handler and they give him treats each time he does this. Vincenzo sometimes eats the treats which he takes with a gentle mouth. Other times he spits them out. He is taken to the park where he walks beside the handler with a loose leash, occasionally he pulls hard towards smells that interest him. He walks slowly sniffing around. When a cart passes close to him, he approaches the handler and looks up towards them with a soft body. He is offered treats and he takes them gently until the cart passes. When exiting the park there are some dogs walking behind him. Vincenzo notices and looks back towards the dog with a tense body. Handler calls him over and offers a treat to redirect him. Vincenzo spits out the treat. He has a strained expression and is panting as he is walked away from the dogs. Vincenzo is then walked back towards the shelter, he pulls mildly back into the building and is returned to his kennel without issue.
Summary (4):: 7/20/25 (Trainer Note): Vincenzo is standing in the middle of his kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed using a treat as a lure and a treat trail is set up prior to being removed from kennel. As he exits the room he does not kennel fight as he is pre-occupied with consuming the treats. He is taken to the yard for a training session, however, he becomes uninterested in treats while out in the yard. Handler opts out from training as Vincenzo is quite distracted and over threshold. Handler takes him back to kennel and while in the elevator he becomes food motivated again, sitting and waiting for a reward. Handler decides to attempt training schedule in PAC interaction room. The 'Super Bowl' pattern game is set up and Vincenzo is fully engaged and receptive. He follows alongside handler, from bowl to bowl, checking in, and improving his engagement with both his environment and handler. He is given a large jackpot reward at the end of the session. He is walking from one side of the room to the other, just with two bowls, fully engaged with handler and taking treats softly from the hand. He is returned to kennel without issue. 7/17/25: Vincenzo is reported to have chewed through his kuranda bed. 7/13/25: Vincenzo is standing at the front of kennel with a slightly tense body. He is easily leashed using treats. Handler tosses some treats o the floor outside of the kennel. As he hops out he immediately goes for the treats but seconds after he intensely starts to kennel fight and handler has to use a lot of muscle to remove him out of the room. He continues pulling back to the room until he gets to the elevator and shakes off. He is taken to the yard for a training session but is kept on drag. Handler offers several treat options as well as high value ones and he remains uninterested. Handler tosses a plush toy and he immediately chases after it. Handler notes that he finds toys of most value for next training session. When pet, he closes his mouth and becomes slightly tense, but when handler ceases petting, he reproaches with soft body and heavily leans into handlers shins. His movements are quick and sudden, pupils very dilated, and body language changing from loose to slightly tense quickly. Upon return to kennel he does not kennel fight as intensely as when he was removed. He begins to loudly vocalize as the other dogs are walked past his kennel and removed from the room.
Summary (5):: 7/5/25: Vincenzo at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed, tries to kennel fight upon exiting the kennel, handler keeps him away and he will jump on the handler exuberantly with a closed mouth. He pulls towards the dogs in the passing pop up. Vincenzo is walked to the street where he pulls mild but when there are smells that interest him, he pulls hard. Vincenzo relieves self, and is then walked back to the shelter where he is returned to kennel without issue. Later when other dogs are pulled, Vincenzo can be heard vocalizing loudly in kennel 6/28/25: Vicenzo is at the front of the kennel neutral body. He is easily leashed using a treat as a lure. When he comes out of kennel, he turns to the kennel next to him in the back of the room but handler tosses treats to guide him forward. He places his paws on the torso of the handler and allows petting. He is guided down using a treat as a lure. He is walked on the street where he explores sniffing certain spots for minutes at a time. He is receptive to handler calling him but is not interested in treats. He returns to kennel without issue. 6/21/25: Vincenzo is at the front of the kennel with a tense body, dilated eyes and a wagging tail. He begins jumping up and down as the handler unlocks the kennel. Vincenzo takes a moment to leash as the leash falls off his head when he moves. He is then leashed successfully with a treat lure. As the kennel opens, he quickly exits and ducks behind the handler legs lunging to the kennel next to him. Handler quickly pulls him away and Vincenzo jumps up towards the handler with a closed mouth. Handler briefly straight arms him and he begins to jump around and spin as he is brought to the stairs. He is not trying to jump towards the handler and his mouth is closed. Vincenzo is then brought to the street where he pulls moderate to hard and pants heavily. He stops briefly and hard stares at a dog across the street. Handler uses vocal cues (kissing noise) to catch Vincenzo's attention and scatters treats. He is then walked back to the shelter where he begins frantically pulling back to kennel and is returned without issue.

He jumps up at the kennel door and begins barking at handler, he is briefly distracted with treats but is focused on handler when attempting to leash him. He is successfully leashed and exits kennel quickly and attempts to pull toward the neighboring kennel but he is kept on a short leash. Vincenzo spins around as he exits the room, he looks toward the handler but is kept away and walks with handler down to the street. Once outside Vincenzo pulls forward hard and is frantic while walking. Due to Vincenzo's sporadic pulling and the streets being decently active he is kept on a short leash and walks close to handler. He stops occasionally to sniff spots on the street and generally pulls toward any stimuli that he passes. He is eventually brought back to the care centers. He allows handler to clip his leash and returns to kennel without issue. 6/13/25- ACS reported when pulling Vincenzo from his kennel he went between handler's legs to cage fight. Summary:: Loose body, rapid wagging tail, jumps up socially
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Vicenzo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to a low threshold for arousal and lack of basic manners we recommend a adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Potential challenges comments:: Social Hyperarousal/ Basic Manners/ Mouthiness: Vicenzo has been observed to easily become over arousal. Observed to jump up on handlers presistantly, head whipping with and open mouth, and attempting mouth handlers. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Vicenzo to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. Vicenzo should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Vicenzo. Please see handout on Arousal.
