Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history

Summary:: Biscuit has been observed to show high levels of fear and stress. During intake he was observed to low growl, hard bark, with his body crouched, hard staring, hackles raised, lip curling, and baring teeth as handler approaches. While on leash Biscuit was observed to thrash intensely and head whip towards the secondary handler. Due to the high level of fear, stress and anxiety Biscuit is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (7):: 6/28/25: Biscuit is laying at the back of his kennel facing the front. Handler approaches and kneels down speaking in a high pitched voice. He tenses and growls. Handler slowly extends their hand and tosses in a treat. Biscuit slowly gets up and goes to the treat and begins to engage with it. Handler tosses in another, which lands closer to the door. He comes forward and eats that treat. Handler tosses in another, slowly stands and walks away. 6/24/25: Biscuit is observed to growl loudly at the handler as they are standing in front of his kennel. 6/23/25: Police Officers opened the trunk where there were two pop up crates. Biscuit begins to low growl, hard bark, body is crouched, hard staring, hackles raised, lip curling, and baring teeth as handler approaches. Handlers bring crate to the behavior office to attempt and leash. Single lasso is successfully placed but he continues to retreat, thrash, and low growl. When leash pressure is applied the behavior escalates in intensity. Crate is tilted slightly, and second rope is successfully placed on Biscuit. He continues to thrash briefly, and as he is brought into the room, he begins to head whip towards handler in the back. He is secured in kennel.

Summary:: low growl, hard bark, body is crouched, thrashing on leash
Date of initial:: 6/25/2025
Summary:: Tense and growling inside of kennel. Opted to sedate
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Biscuit so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to high levels of fear and thrashing on leash we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Biscuit has been observed to low growl, hard bark, with his body crouched, hard staring, hackles raised, lip curling, and baring teeth as handler approaches. It is important to move slowly with Biscuit, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
