Animal Profile

Kiara

Hello, my name is Kiara. My animal id is #228222. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/26/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Kiara is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Kiara arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender. During her intake, Kiara was highly fearful, barking at staff, hiding and didn't allow microchip scan. Kiara began leash biting on the way to her kennel. At the beginning of her stay, she was highly fearful during her behavior assessment, although has warmed up to familiar staff. During here time at the Care Center, Kiara has become increasingly difficult for the staff to handle safely. Kiara is noted to intensely leash bite and pull her leash into kennel. Her previous owner notes that she is friendly and outgoing with other dogs, children, and visitors. Medically, Kiara is apparently healthy.

Summary (3):: 7/30/25: Kiara is at the front of the kennel heavy panting, dilated eyes and is jumping up and pushing off the door of the kennel. Handler unlocks the door and Kiara jumps up on her hind legs and snaps towards the leash before it is presented in kennel. Handler presents the leash and she attempts to bite the leash. Handler uses a treat lure and is able to leash her without issue. She is lead out of the kennel and pulls hard towards the driveway. Kiara is walked around the driveway where she is heavily panting and walking slowly with a limp. After sometime outside, she is walked back into the shelter and as she approaches her kennel she slows down and is reluctant to enter. Handler tosses treats and she refuses to enter. Leash pressure is applied and she enters the kennel. She eats the treats as the leash is removed. After the kennel door is closed and is being locked, Kiara jumps up at the door on her hind legs and begins pawing at the kennel door. As handler ends the interaction she barks and begins bouncing off the kennel door.

Summary (4):: 7/29/25: Kiara is observed to be jumping up high on her kennel door and barking loudly. The entire floor of her kennel is coated in blood. It appears that all four paws a bleeding heavily. 7/24/25: It is reported that Kiara is vocalizing, and climbing the kennel door, her back paws are off the ground. 7/24/25: Kiara is curled up and laying down in the back of her kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. She squints and begins to rapidly bang her tail on the kennel floor as handler uses baby voice to coax her forward. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. Kiara leaps out and pulls very hard out the room as she is taken to the yard for an interaction. She is solely interested in interacting with handler. She continuously solicits pets be leaning in and curving her body. She maintains the rapid tail wag and occasionally lip licking. She curls up next to handler on the bench and continues soliciting pets as she sunbathes. She is returned to kennel without issue. As handler departs front of kennel, Kiara begins to loudly vocalize and whine, she even manages to climb to the top of her kennel using her front and hind legs. Handler notices that her hind paw pad is jammed in between the kennel bars and attempts to help, Kiara in one swift movement jerks her paw back and lets out a blood curling scream. Handler makes sure the paw pad is not bleeding before returning with treats.

Summary (5):: 7/20/25: Its noted on the whiteboard that Kiara is biting the leash upon return to kennel. 7/17/25: Kiara is standing on her hind legs while high pitched barking with a very loose and wiggly body as handler approaches. She does not accepts treats as a lure and remains on her hind legs with a loose and wiggly body, she is able to be leashed and removed from kennel. She sprints out the room and is taken to the street for a walk. She remains very social with handler and often, gently jumps on them placing her front paws on their waist and soliciting pets by pushing handlers hand with her head. She does not react to dogs on the street, will only fixate briefly but with a neutral body. When passing by people from afar she also has no reaction, but when nearby, she slightly crouches and begins to lip lip as she scurries away. She quickly shakes off and resumes having a loose and wiggly body. She is returned to her kennel without issue. As the leash is removed, she lightly mouths the leash for a brief second. 7/8/25: Kiara is at the front of the kennel with a soft wiggly body and wagging tail. Kiara is easily leashed and walks on the street with mild to moderate pulling, she spots a dog across the street, she briefly stares at them then looks away. Kiara is then brought to the assessment office. She approaches the assessor with a lowered body and her tail pressed against her body. She briefly sniffs the assessor and then backs away towards the handler where she approaches with a soft body and wagging tail and her ears pinned. The assessor offers her treats but she continues to back away. Kiara then approaches the handler and leans them and allows petting on her head. After sometime, Kiara warms up and she approaches the assessor with a wagging tail and a lowered tense body. Kiara is able to be collared. After her assessment she is easily re-leashed and walked back to her kennel. Outside of her kennel, she quickly backs up and retreats from kennel, handler uses gentle leash pressure to direct her back into the kennel. She enters the kennel and turns and tries to bite leash as its removed from kennel. Interaction with her is ended afterwards.

Summary (6):: 07/04/25: ACS notes upon returning to kennel Kiara bit leash and pulled into kennel. 6/30/25 (PM): Kiara is at the front of kennel with a soft body and a rapid tail wag, slightly and briefly lip licking. She was easily leashed and brought out to the street for a walk. She had bursts of moments where she would have a more relaxed body with tail wag, and then would crouch slightly with a rapid tail wag and approach handler to sit on their feet and look up at them. She accepted pets and took treats softly. She softened when baby voice was used. She is returned to kennel without issue. 6/30/35: Kiara is at the front of kennel with a soft body and a rapid low tail wag as handler approaches. She begins to wiggle a bit as the door is unlocked whilst intermittently lip licking and whale eyeing. She is removed from the room and taken for a street walk. She remains close to handler, continuously lip licking, slinking away from loud noises, keeping a crouched body, a tense body, and a tucked tail. Kiara approaches handler in a social manner, and places her paws on handlers laps, soliciting pets. She is returned to kennel, briefly baulks and retreats when arriving at the front of kennel. With some baby voice and soft coaxing she hops in the kennel. 06/29/25: Kiara is at the back of her kennel as handler approaches. She is offered chicken and slowly approaches the front of kennel, taking the pieces gently. Handler unlocks the kennel door and leashes Kiara slowly, once she is successfully leashed she is taken to to the street for her walk. Kiara walks alongside handler and is very hyper vigilant while walking, she frequently stops and turns to look at even the slightest sound and will stare at people and other stimuli from across the street. Each time she is able to be redirected simply by calling her, she will continue walking alongside handler. She stops to sniff spots on the street and walks past people without issue. At one point she approaches a patch of dirt next to a pole with a trash bin attached to it. Kiara approaches the dirt patch and sniffs around, she then looks up at the pole and seemingly becomes fearful of the pole and very quickly and intensely dashes away from the pole, tangling herself on the pole with the leash and causing a loud banging noise as the leash hits the trash can which further scares her. Handler remains still for a moment before untangling the leash and continuing the walk. After walking for a bit she is brought back to the care centers, handler clips her leash and she is brought back to kennel. At the front of kennel she is hesitant to enter so handler uses mild but consistent leash pressure to slowly coax her into kennel. She eventually returns and interaction is ended.

Summary (7):: 06/28/25: Kiara is laying at the back of kennel as handler approaches. She remains laid down and handler begins slowly presenting treats near the front of kennel, Kiara frequently lip licks and does not respond to the treats but does eventually approach the front. She slinks forward slowly and with a slightly tense and hunched posture. Handler remains still and waits a while before attempting to coax her closer to the leash, after a bit she sniffs the leash and backs away, lip licking intermittently. She eventually allows handler to place the leash over her head, she exits kennel and walks out to the street with handler. Kiara's posture is tense and her shoulders remain hunched slightly. After reaching the street she is hyper vigilant and will slightly react to sounds and most movement she sees, she stops and stares at the stimuli but can be redirected simply by calling her. Kiara will frequently zig zag behind handler so handler maintains a position to her right side and maintains this position for the duration of the walk which stops her frantic walking. She stops to sniff around grassy spots and will usually fixate on people passing her, she will cower and lip lick until they pass and is also observed to turn around completely when she notices people behind her. She is walked for a bit more before being brought back inside. She allows handler to clip his leash and returns to kennel without issue. 6/27/25: Kiara is siting at the front of her kennel with a tense body and widened eyes as handler approaches. She retreats to the back of her kennel with a coaxed body as the handler unlocks the door. She has no interest in treats and would turn her head away when the handler slowly presents their leash. She allows the handler to slowly bring their leash above her head and is able to be lassoed. Once leashed, she is comfortable walking out of kennel and is slowly taken to the yard. In the yard, she instantly relieves herself and would walk with a tense body low to the ground body, and a tucked tail with her hackles raised. She had no interest in treats or toys and would sniff around to explore. She had no reaction to dogs or people and is slowly taken back to her kennel with no issues.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Kiara's previous owner states that she will bark and growl when toys in her possession are touched. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Kiara's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful Defensive: Kiara has been observed to be tense and trembling. During intake Kiara was observed to be barking at handlers. It is important to move slowly with Kiara, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
