Portabella
Hello, my name is Portabella. My animal id is #222684. I am a desexed female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/29/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - allergies.
Portabella needs at risk placement for medical reasons. She is a mature dog with pneumonia and needs supportive care in a veterinary clinic to recover. Behaviorally, Portabella warms up to a slow approach and allows handling.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Portabella so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no young children.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Portabella has been observed to have a tense body and be timid around handlers. It is important to always go slow and give Portabella the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Portabella would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
