Place with a New Hope partner: Zeuski came into the care center as an owner surrender due to his owners losing their home.Zeuski presents with a low threshold for arousal and difficulty regulating his behavior when overstimulated. He can escalate into mounting, mouthing, and persistent jumping when frustrated. During interactions, Zeuski often shows tense body language, pacing, whimpering, and limited interest in food or toys. Zeuski would benefit from a New Hope placement that can provide structured outlets for energy, clear boundaries, and experienced handling focused on impulse control, arousal reduction, and consistent routines. A calmer environment with predictable movement and limited triggers would help him better regulate and succeed outside the care center.

Date of assessment:: 12/9/2025

Summary:: 12/06/25: A handling assessment will not be condcuted at this time due Zeuski intense mounting towards handlers and arousal. 12/05/25:Zeuski is given more time to decompress due to mounting medical staff and shown signs of low arousal during his medical exam.

Summary (6):: 12/20/25: Zeuski displays the same behaviors as of yesterday (12/19). Please refer to those notes. 12/19/25: Zeuski is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed and is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he would explore around with a loose body frame and is comfortable approaching the handler and would sit for treats. He would jump up on the handler with a loose body and he would jump up on the couch to sniff for treats and toys. When entering back into his kennel, he would jump up and paw at the door intensely and spin around while vocalizing on the door and kennel wall as the handler locks it and walks away. 12/18/25: Zeuski is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping, barking and pawing at the door while barking as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be quickly leashed and is then taken to the behavior room. 12/18: As a handler is placing a tag on a kennel next to Zeuski's, he can be heard screeching in his kennel. They see him scaling his kennel walls while screeching. When he finally stands on all 4 legs, he begins to circle his kennel. The handler calls to him and drops treats to break the repetitive motions but he only takes one piece before he begins jumping on the kennel door, resuming his screeching.

Summary (7):: 12/16/25: While outside on a walk with a handler, Zeuski began mounting the handler. While the handler attempts to stiff arm Zeuski off, another handler outside with a dog throws treats to distract Zeuski which he ignores. As two other staff members approach to help, Zeuski dismounts the handler and looks towards one of the staff members while the staff member double leashes him. When Zeuski is brought into his kennel he jumps up on the kennel door trying to exit a few times while barking. 12/13/25: A staff member reported that Zeuski became highly aroused while she was standing in one spot, waiting for dogs to walk past. He began mounting her, and when she tried to redirect him, he started mouthing her jacket and arms. He continued to mount her despite attempts to stop him. A second handler came to assist, and Zeuski was double-leashed and returned to his kennel. 12/11/25: Zeuski is laying down facing the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front as the handler unlocks the door and begins jumping up. He is able to be leashed when he jumps down and is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he has a tense body as he would pull around to explore. After relieving himself, he would constantly approach and jump up at the door with whimpering to seek exit. He has no interest in treats or toys and does not interact with the handler. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and has to be muscled inside due to not wanting to go back in. He jumps up while whimpering at the door as the handler locks it and walks away. 12/07/25 Zeuski is at the front of his kennel with a relaxed body as the handler approaches. He will step into the loop as the handler presents it and he is taken to the live room. He pulls his way out of the kennel room displaying a neutral frame and a relaxed tail. They enter the room and Zeuski immediately begins to explore, sniffing different parts of the room. Zeuski will engage with a paper bowl filled with spray cheese and the handler will toss treats into it periodically. When he is done with the bowl, he paces around the room while panting. He appears nervous as he trembles a bit, reluctant to touch as the handler strokes his back and he becomes stiff. Zeuski lip licks and creates distance. The handler will toss him treats in which he will catch and after sometime, he is returned to kennel. Zeuski pulls his way back to his kennel room, entering his kennel with no issue, however, attempting to push his way out once back inside. Zeuski will stand on his hind legs, remaining loose in frame, pressing his paws against the kennel door as the handler locks its.

He can escalate into mounting, mouthing, and persistent jumping when frustrated. During interactions, Zeuski often shows tense body language, pacing, whimpering, and limited interest in food or toys. Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: In the prior home Zeuski is noted to jump up often. Training should focus on reinforcing calm greetings by rewarding four-on-the-floor behavior and implementing impulse-control exercises such as “sit” and “wait.” Consistent management and structured sessions will help reduce jumping. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Zeuski is noted to bark/growl when he is startled.Training should include gradual desensitization to sudden movements and environmental triggers, paired with high-value rewards for calm responses. Avoid startling interactions and maintain predictable, low-pressure handling. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Strength/leash pulling: Zeuski is noted to hard pull on the leash.Begin with short sessions using high-value treats to reward walking beside the handler, combined with stop-and-go or direction-change techniques to discourage pulling. Consistency and positive reinforcement are key. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Low threshold for arousal: Zeuski is noted to escalate into mounting, mouthing, and persistent jumping when frustrated.Training should focus on teaching alternative behaviors through redirection to appropriate chew items, impulse-control exercises, and short, low-arousal sessions. Reinforce calm behavior and use time-outs if escalation occurs. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Low threshold for arousal.
