Saint
Hello, my name is Saint. My animal id is #237603. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 9 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/18/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormSaint is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as an owner surrender. His previous owner described him to be friendly and outgoing with children, but is reactive towards cats, dogs, small animals, and strangers. He was described to lunge and bark towards them. He also stated that Saint has a previous bite history. Saint bit a person that approached and pet him on the neck. During his stay at the care center, Saint has been observed to be highly fearful. He did not tolerate handling during his assessment and had a tense body, whale eye, intensely lip lick, and created distance from handler. However, during intake he was loose, wiggly bodied and allowed petting. Medically, he apparently has a heart murmur and is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

Saint exits kennel with moderate pulling, once outside of kennel room is pulling less, with neutral body. On sidewalk Saint walk ahead of handler with minimal pulling, is neutral in frame but ears are pinned back for most of the walk. On sidewalk Saint continues to refuse treats. Saint returns to MACC, outside of kennel Saint baulks, treats or verbal cues are ineffective, Saint is muscled back into kennel.
Summary (7):: 10/29/25: Saint is at the back of his kennel, curled up upon approach. Once he sees the handler he would slowly approach the front and allows himself to be easily leashed with his ears pinned back. Saint would slowly exit the kennel and have a mild pull ahead of the handler. He is then taken for a street walk, where he would have a low body as he walks around - he would then begin to sniff around and quickly relieve himself. Saint would not react towards any passing stimuli and would continue to walk ahead with a neutral body. Shortly after, he is slowly returned back to his kennel with no further issue. 10/20/25- Saint is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, he is easily leashed and pulls hard exiting the building for a street walk. He sees another dog on the sidewalk and has a neutral body. He doesn't acknowledge other dog and paces back and forth looking around. He walks with a mild pull and will pull hard momentarily to a smell something. Handler offers him treats but he's shows no interest. He has no reaction to people walking past him. He is taken for his assessment where he is aloof with handlers, just comes to sniff them and around the room. A fan is on and Saint looks up at it with a slight tense body, lowers his head with ears pinned, he backs away from it. Handler shuts it off and he is easily collared. He occasionally jumps on handler, he then jumps down when other handler calls to him. He explores the room, listening to the sounds outside the room. When handler pets him, he rubs their body into their legs with a stiff face. He is easily leashed and he baulks when returning to kennel, handler tosses in treats but he shows no interest. Handler has to muscle in.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Saint is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Saint.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite history and fearful behavior observed during care we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to lunging towards cats while on leash recommend a home with no cats. No Dog Parks: Due to lunging towards unfamiliar dogs we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Saint's previous owner states that he has a few accidents a week. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Destructive Behavior: Saint's previous owner states that he is destructive in the home with items such as furniture, walls, and shoes. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Saint will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: Saint's previous owner states that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity: Saint's previous owner states that he will bark and growl when held/restrained and when pushed/pulled off furniture. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Saint to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Anxiety/ Separation Anxiety: Saint's previous owner states that he will pace, whine, and be unable to settle in the home, and will whine when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety and Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Saint's previous owner states that he will lunge towards cats, small animals, dogs, and strangers while on leash. Saint will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Saint's previous owner states that he pulls hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
