Animal Profile

Blizzard

Hello, my name is Blizzard. My animal id is #252974. I am a male cream dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/26/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Blizzard is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Blizzard has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has not allowed staff to return him to his kennel safely. Blizzard initially started balking when outside and took a significant amount of time for handlers to coax him back into the building. Blizzard refused high-value treats such as chicken breast and sliced cheese. Once double leashed, Blizzard escalated to intense levels of thrashing, flailing, alligator rolling, and leash biting, which has resulted in him hurting himself. In the kennel, Blizzard will eat treats that are closest to him. Medically, Blizzard is apparently healthy.

Details on my behavior are...

Date of intake:: 4/26/2026

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray(Unknown History)

Date of assessment:: 4/29/2026

Summary:: Due to Blizzard's fearfulness,thrashing and alligator rolling on the leash, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time.

Summary (6):: 4/29 (KSV): Blizzard is sitting in a front corner of his kennel when a handler approaches. He does not react to a toy that is offered and will only eat the treats that are closest to him. Blizzard begins lip licking and trying to press himself closer into the corner of his kennel, the longer the handler lingers. The interaction is ended to prevent further stress. 4/27/26 (KSV): Blizzard was lying against kennel door as handler approached. Handler called out to Blizzard but they remained lying down, no acknowledgment towards handler. Handler tossed a treat scatter into kennel and the treats that were close enough Blizzard consumed but those out of reach blizzard left alone. Handler moved away from kennel ending interaction.

Summary (7):: 4/26 (PM): Ops and ACS staff were unable to return Blizzard to his kennel due to his thrashing. They initially reported that they were having difficulty walking Blizzard back into the building because he kept planting and balking outside. When the handler arrives, Blizzard is pressed up against the wall, nearly under the sink, directly across from his kennel. The handler offers him a chicken breast, but he only sniffs and does not take it. He ignores coaxing and toys. The Ops staff stated that he was pulling in the direction of the opposite end of the room, so they were going to walk him out that way and attempt to reset. The handler props doors open to make it easier, but Blizzard begins bucking in the hallway near the small dog room. He continues bucking and then flailing once in SDA. Due to his rapidly increasing intensity, Blizzard is double-leashed. He begins gator rolling and vocalizing, getting one lead off in the process. He is doubled again, and Blizzard begins thrashing, flailing, gator rolling harder, getting both leads twisted tightly around him. This continues into the room where he is snapping and biting at the leads, getting closer to both handlers' limbs and torsos as he spins on his back legs when in the threshold of his kennel; essentially trapping the closest handler to the frame due to his size. Blizzard slams into the ground twice, tongue turning dark purple due to him getting tangled in the leads. When the handlers attempt to detangle/untwist the leads, Blizzard begins flailing again, urinating, defecating, and now bleeding from his mouth. Medical staff is called. On the second attempt to untwist, Blizzard is holding a section of both leads in his mouth. He does not get back up the second time and finally releases the leads. He is quickly untwisted, and he remains on the ground. A medical staff member races over with a gurney in an attempt to slide Blizzard onto it, but he quickly sits up and whale eyes the gurney. He is given more time to recover before making a final attempt to get him into the kennel as he tries to flee from the gurney. He begins thrashing again, but not as intensely as the previous attempts. Once in the kennel, a hook is used to remove both leads.

Potential challenges: : Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: In the care center, Blizzard thrashed and alligator rolling while on leash.Always allow Blizzard to approach new situations at his own pace, and never force him into uncomfortable situations. Using a calm and patient approach will help reduce his fearfulness and build his confidence. Please see the handout on decompression period.
