Blue

Hello, my name is Blue. My animal id is #203466. I am a desexed male tri color dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 7 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/18/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.

Wile E. Coyote is on the at-risk list due to behavior reasons. Despite efforts to make him comfortable, Wile E. Coyote has displayed high levels of anxiety both in and out of kennel, often seeking exit, heavy panting, hypersalivating and is overall aloof around handlers. Medically, Wile E. Coyote has dental disease, diarrhea, and is underweight.

Blue is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During his stay in the care center Blue has been observed to display high levels of anxiety both in and out of kennel, heavily panting, darting back and forth on leash and jumping up on the kennel door. Blue is noted to refuse to walk on the street. While with select handlers Blue with engage in pattern games. Medically Blue is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

Summary:: Energetic, allowed handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Blue FKA Wile E. Coyote so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, and social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),No cats

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Blue FKA Wile E Coyote appears anxious during his time in care, we recommend he goes to a home without young children. No Cats: Due to hard barking and growling at cats we recommend a home with no cats.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Blue's previous owner states that he will become tense and hover over toys, food, and bones that are in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Blue's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful: Blue's previous owner states that he is fearful of loud noises and when being held/ restrained. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Blue would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Blue FKA Wile E Coyote appears anxious during his time in care. While on walks Blue has been observed to zig zag in front of handlers with a low body. Blue's previous owner states that he is anxious in the home and will whine and pace. If Blue displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Blue's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl when cats and strangers approach. Blue will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than cats and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Blue FKA Wile E Coyote is a strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
