Animal Profile

Aries

Hello, my name is Aries. My animal id is #121682. I am a desexed male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 4 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Aries is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center. He has warmed up to staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels noted in his past, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable calm home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a startled cat reactions adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My purr motor is always running! I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. My foster writes: Hello! My name is Aries. I have a lot of love to give but I also need time to trust. I love gentle pets and eventually will be come quite a cuddler. Until then, I appreciate your patience and love. When I do come out of my shell I want to cuddle and play! I've a vocal cat who loves to talk, especially when I'm hungry. I hope you have some good window space cause I love a view! A volunteer writes: The thought of being chosen is so exciting to Aries that he comes rushing forward in a big adorable tumble of perfect. Stretched out at the front of his condo when I visited, he flopped over like he'd just been waiting to do so as soon as I opened the door. To make his point that all he wants is a friend, he rolled over into my arms. Resting his fluffy cheeks into my hand for just a moment before he decided it was time to get back to his rolls. Aries seemed very happy to cuddle, but once I offered him a pipe cleaner feather I learned that he loves that too. I admire his up for anything approach to life as much as the way he plays. Aries has the adorable style of grabbing his toy and running with it in his mouth. Holding it his paws to toss it in the air, Aries is really working so hard to show all he has it to offer in hopes you'll choose him.

He walked out of his box and allowed MC Scanning and collaring just fine. He remained with a loose body and high tail. He took some encouragement to enter his den, and began to stress meow once inside. He also stress meowed when inside his kennel.

For a New Family to Know: Aries is known as affectionate most of the time. He was an indoor cat with outdoor access. He enjoys spending his time in the bedroom. He enjoys fetching items such as bottle caps or toys. He enjoys scratching on carpet/fabric surfaces. He was beloved because he enjoyed cuddling sometimes. He was also a avid hunter in the home, keeping the home safe and secure. He was fed a dry food only diet of the brands Meow Mix and wilderness. He was given the Greenies treats as well. He was used to having 1 litterbox in the home, located in the hallway. It was a covered litterbox equipped with unscented litter.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Provided 3/14/25: Foster Home Summary for Aries (6 Weeks): Aries spent about six weeks in a foster home, where he made steady progress in building trust. By the two-week mark, his foster reported that while he was initially timid and easily startled, he had already begun to bond and seek affection. He also formed a positive connection with the foster’s boyfriend. *Aries warms up slowly but has a lot of love to give once he feels safe. *He began enjoying pets more and eventually started sleeping in bed at night. *He’s very vocal and enjoys “talking” with people. He knows his name and responds to basic cues like “come here.” *Aries loves to look out the window—especially if there’s a warm radiator underneath. *He’s highly food-motivated and loves to play! He entertains himself well but would thrive with someone who enjoys interactive play. Aries would do best in a calm, patient home where he can continue to build confidence and be given time to adjust. ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/26/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Sitting in the front of his kennel, Aries as a neutral face/body with almond eyes and forward ears. When the assessor opens the kennel door and speaks softly, he stands with a high tail and leans in to sniff the assessor’s hand. He head bunts and allows pets on his head/cheeks as he leans in for more and falls onto his side. When coaxed back up with treats he still has a high tail and allows all pets on his back and as well as around his body and when pick up was conducted, he allowed the assessor to hold onto him briefly before placing him back in the kennel with no issues. 3/16/25 After a feline behavior consultation with the foster parent, the following summary was provided: Aries is a sweet and friendly cat who has previously lived in larger spaces with indoor and outdoor space and has a tendency to react poorly to loud noises and other stressors/triggers that may disturb him. He easily ramps up and becomes nippy and tends to think with his mouth. He's extremely energetic and very playful and has a good appetite. Currently he lives in a large studio with a good view out the windows and the opportunity for some exercise in the hallway staircase, but he may need more than he's getting at this point (see Behavior GAN note from 3/16/25 for more details).

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Sweet,Demanding,Playful,Curious,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Rough play,Very high energy level,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Aries is a sweet and affectionate cat who occasionally startles easily. In March 2024, he bit/scratched his previous owner after becoming frustrated when he wasn’t allowed outside. There were no further issues in that home. In March 2025, Aries was playing when a loud noise from a neighbor spooked him, causing him to nip and run away. He calmed down quickly and returned to being cuddly. In July 2025, after stepping in urine, he became uncomfortable during cleaning and scratched/bit when he’d had enough. He then hid to cool off. Aries does best in a calm, patient home where his boundaries are respected. He is loving and playful, but like many cats, can react when startled or overstimulated.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Aries was resting calmly on top of the den when approached. He was alert but relaxed, with neutral eyes and ears forward. He accepted petting and offered gentle head bunts. Throughout the assessment, he remained responsive to sounds in the room but stayed calm. Aries showed enjoyment during interactions—rolling onto his side, accepting pets with a scratcher tool, and eating treats. He stood with a high, quivering tail and a loose, relaxed body—signs of contentment. He remained calm during a brief pick-up and continued to tolerate gentle attention afterward. Overall, Aries displayed affectionate and easygoing behavior in a calm setting. However, due to his prior owner history (see separate notes) and a bite/scratch history we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home.
