Cozy
Hello, my name is Cozy. My animal id is #248475. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 2/27/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormCozy is on the at-risk list due to behavioral concerns. Cozy arrived at the Care Center with limited history. During Cozy's stay in her most recent home, Cozy was involved in a bite incident with a resident dog and has been highly reactive to the resident cat. Cozy was reported to initially get along with the other resident dog; however one evening Cozy bit the resident dog without a known trigger. The bite left a puncture wound on the resident dog that required treatment at a vet. With staff, Cozy has been social, is treat receptive, and allows all contact. Medically, Cozy is noted to be in heat, but is otherwise apparently healthy.

During Cozy's stay in her most recent home, Cozy was involved in a bite incident with a resident dog and has been highly reactive to the resident cat. Cozy was reported to initially get along with the other resident dog. However, one evening Cozy ran toward the other resident dog that was laying in bed without a known trigger, both dogs began fighting. Cozy was separated and the following morning, the person housing Cozy noted that her other resident dog had a puncture wound on the shoulder and was taken to the vet for treatment. With staff, Cozy has been easily leashed for walks, is treat receptive, and has shown limited scalability. Due to Cozy's history of escalation to fighting a dog with little warning, we recommend placement with an experienced New Hope Partner that can carefully manage her potential triggers.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have limited history on Cozy so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),No cats,Single-pet home,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Cozy's detailed behavior concerns, we recommend a home with no children No Cats: Cozy was noted to be highly reactive to the resident cat in the home. Noted to lunge and charge at the cat repeatedly, the resident cat was able to to evade him and no contact was made. We recommend a home without any cats. Single-Pet Home: Cozy was briefly housed in a home with other resident pets including a cat and a dog. Cozy was involved in a bite with the resident dog was noted to be highly reactive to the cat. We recommend Cozy be the only pet in the home. Place with NH Partner: Cozy's bite history is significant. This is a behavior that will require significant lifestyle adaptations to prevent injury to other dogs and cats and to increase Cozy's quality of life. We highly recommend consultation with a veterinary behaviorist and placement with an experienced New Hope Partner.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Cozy is a bit fearful at the care center, most notably during her medical exam. It is important to always go slow and give Cozy the option to walk away from any social interaction. Cozy should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Cozy’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Cozy would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see hand-out on decompression time. Bite History (dog): Escalating to biting is a behavior that Cozy has been reported to do. Please see bite report. This behavior is likely to continue as it has become part of Cozy's repertoire, and will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Cozy and reducing the resulting bites. Please see hand-out on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
