Summary:: Upon entering the behavior room, Yako was allowed to wander on a drag leash, he appeared a bit timid though approached handlers and allowed petting. When assessment began, Yako became highly anxious and attempted to increase distance from handler; he began head flipping. Out of concern for his stress level, a handling assessment was not attempted at this time.
Summary:: Yako's owner reported that he barks when he sees other dogs. Here at the Care Center, Yako is uncomfortable around novel dogs. He spends most of his session keeping to himself and wandering the yard, avoiding the novel dog in the process. The Behavior Department believes Yako would be the most comfortable as the only resident dog at this time. Any other dog should be respectful of his space. All introductions should be done slowly and under supervision. 12/9-11: When off leash at the Care Center, Yako very briefly greets the novel female then moves past her. He is nervous, hackles raised and explores the yard ignoring her for the rest of the session.
Date of intake:: 12/8/2018
Summary:: Shy, tolerated handling
Date of initial:: 12/8/2018
Summary:: Tense, whale eye, head flips; snapped at muzzle
ENERGY LEVEL:: Yako is reported to have a medium to high energy level in his previous home environment.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the high level of anxiety displayed in the care center combined with his overall timidness, we believe Yako may be best set up to succeed through placement with an experienced rescue partner who can reassess his behavior in a stable home environment. Force-free, reward based training only is advised.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Yako's previous owner notes that he may growl and bark when his toys are approached. We recommend that Yako be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Yako's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Fearful: Yako is a bit fearful at the care center, he appears to manage his stress well though has escalated to higher level warning signals when uncomfortable. It is important to always go slow and give Yako the option to walk away from any social interaction. Yako should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Yako’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Yako would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Anxiety: Yako has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking, panting) continually through the SAFER and through one-one sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake or in his previous home environment so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.
