Animal Profile

Supernova

Hello, my name is Supernova. My animal id is #212175. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/17/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Supernova is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Supernova has been deteriorating during his stay despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Supernova in kennel displays a poor kennel presence, lunging at the kennel door when handlers pass, and hard barking incessantly in kennel. While this does not occur frequently, they can be intense when the behaviors do arise. In his kennel, Supernova hard barks, pants heavily, and spins off his kennel door, indicating high levels of stress. When attempting to remove him from the kennel, Supernova shows significant fearfulness and avoidance, retreating to the back of his kennel and pressing against the walls when handlers attempt to leash him. Occasionally, he has shown relaxed behavior, seeking contact from select handlers, but remains highly anxious overall. Medically, Supernova is apparently healthy.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Supernova is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Supernova has been deteriorating during his stay despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. He has been observed to leash bite along with fear-based anxiety. There have been incidents of leash biting and jumping on handlers during heightened arousal, flailing to the point of falling to the ground on his back. Occasionally, he has shown relaxed behavior, seeking contact from select handlers, but remains highly anxious overall. Medically, Supernova is apparently healthy. What my friends at ACC say about me: I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I need a home without cats or small animals. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with others. A volunteer writes: My heart breaks when I see Supernova. He's a big boy, his exterior projecting a strong slightly aloof guy, but inside he's just a big baby. I find out quickly that when I tell him to "sit" he lays down at my feet, not quite sure if he should roll over or give bellies or stay alert. He spends most of our time outside at my feet, alternating between soliciting petting and exploring the treats I have to offer. Nova has been stressed in the shelter, especially in his kennel. Outside of it, he's looser and wigglier, offering play bows to handlers and taking treats softly. Nova was surrendered to us due to his guardian needing to be hospitalized. Nova hasn't had much experience with new people and when he does he can be fearful. He is described as social, affectionate and active. He knows the cues sit, down, paw, go and come here. His favorite activities are being pet and playing with toys. He loves cheese and peanut butter treats. Nova gets nervous in the car. Due to his fearful behaviors and touch sensitivity, Nova is available to a L4 adopter.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Supernova's potential challenges we recommend he is placed in an adult-only home at this time. No cats- In the prior home it is reported that Supernova will hard bark and growl at cats. Due to this, we recommend Supernova be placed in a home without cats.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- In the prior home it is reported that Supernova will resource guard stolen objects that are valuable to him He will display a tense body or hover over them. It is essential to work on desensitizing him to having is possessions handled by using techniques like trading up for higher-value items and practicing "drop it" and "leave it". Please see handout on Resource guarding Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- Supernova continues display fear-based behaviors, including retreating to the back of his kennel and showing signs of anxiety, such as whale eye, panting, and pulling on the leash. While he remains avoidant and uneasy, there are moments where he shows progress, softening his body and seeking proximity to handlers when given time to decompress. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. touch sensitivity/Separation anxiety/anxiety- In his previous home, Supernova was reported to have general anxiety and separation anxiety, though specific behaviors related to this were not detailed. He allows bathing and brushing but does not tolerate nail trimming. He also becomes anxious when in the car and shows fear when startled. Managing his anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety and Handling/touch sensitivity. Leash-biting/Strength/leash pulling- In the prior home supernova is reported to pull hard on the lead. This behavior highlights her strength and the need for training to teach him to walk calmly on a leash. Using tools like a no-pull harness and consistent leash training can help manage his pulling behavior.In the care center he is reported to leash bite Kennel presence- Supernova was climbing on kennel door barking when handler approached
