Cameo is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. A volunteer writes: If you have a experience helping shy cats come out of their shell, then Cameo could really use an assist from you. This quiet heartbreaker came from a home, and he's lived with other cats. But the new surroundings at the Care Center have left him out of sorts. So far he's tolerated some pettings and human attention, but he tends to go into retreat rather than opening up. Cameo is a handsome tuxie with an adorable blaze above his gum drop nose, and he appears to have been well taken care of--just look at those pristine white paws. We want this promising boy to go into a home where he has some time to decompress and blossom. Could you be the guardian angel Cameo's been looking for?

KNOWN HISTORY:: Cameo was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Prior assessment 4/22/25: Cameo remained resting in the den, alert but immobile. He tolerated petting with a scratcher tool through the portal door, anxiously scanning the room with wide eyes. He shrinks in place slowly retreating throughout the assessment. Ended early to minimize stress. 5/25/25 Vol. Cameo was curled up, head up, behind the litter box in the top cubby. He was motionless when I put treats on the ledge in front of the cubby portal. I talked to him for a while with the kennel and cubby doors open. He stared at me, ears upright, most of the time. After a few minutes, though, he softened and returned a slow blink. I didn’t try to pet him.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Cameo was in the cubby with a blank expression when approached. He leaned away during attempts to pet him but permitted gentle petting on his head with the scratcher tool. He stayed motionless and showed no interest in the offered treats. Ended to minimize stress. Cameo tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
