Animal Profile

Toulouse

Hello, my name is Toulouse . My animal id is #248640. I am a male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/1/2026.

Toulouse is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Toulouse tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Toulouse was brought in as a stray; there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/6/26 Vol. Toulouse was lying down inside den. His eyes and ears were neutral, and he returned a slow blink after several moments. When offered squeeze up on scratcher tool, he initially hissed several times, then poked his head out very slightly to eat when I angled my body away from him. He could not be coaxed further out of den and appeared tense. He returned another slow blink and hesitantly accepted a bit more squeeze up, then retreated further into den, away from opening. 3/8/26 Vol. In den, out of sight. Did not visibly more or make noise when cup of Temptations and squeeze-up was dropped into the den. Briefly poked head out when rearranging linens, watching with widely dilated eyes, then retreated. Did not come back out for a pipeline cleaner toy. When den cover was raised, was facing forward with wide eyes, had not eaten treats. Left a Feliway square. 3/10/26 Vol. Hiding in his privacy den with head poking out. Hissed and swatted at clicker with Squeeze-ups. Left it in the den and he sniffed at it but didn’t eat any. Tried to lure him out with the cat dancer and the laser but he wasn’t having any of it. Put some toys rolled in catnip in the den but he didn’t seem interested. Never came out of his den. 3/13/26 Vol. Toulouse was curled up sleeping inside den. When approached, he looked up with squinty eyes. He sniffed squeeze up on scratcher tool, but did not eat. He appeared to be under the weather, and could not be coaxed out of den, although he returned a few more slow blinks. 3/15/26 FB32 Hiding in the den curled up, hisses when removing den cover. Sniffs treats offered on tool, hisses and growls when receiving cheek rubs. Leans head back with tense body and wide eyes when pet on the head, and then hisses, lip licks, and looks back when stroking body. 3/19/26 Vol. Hiding in his privacy den. Hissed when kennel door was opened. Swatted and hissed at the clicker with Squeeze-up. Angrily swatted at the cat dancer. Popped his head out of the den to stare at me and then he ran back in. No playing at this time. 3/24/26 FB73 Toulouse is laying in his den, growling and peeking his head out of the portal exit as the kennel door is opened. Treats are offered but he does not respond to them. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, he swats hard, hissing and continuing to low growl. Interaction is ended to reduce stress.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Toulouse should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water because behaviors seen at the Care Center [shy, avoids handling, hides in den, leans away from contact/hisses] strongly suggest that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: Toulouse has been fearful and avoidant of handling during his stay at the care center and may be intimidated by young children. No children under age 13, respectful older children only. Counselor discretion.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Toulouse is laying in his den, pressed against the back wall, eyes wide and pupils dilated as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and the den door is lifted, he remains frozen in place and does not move, observing the assessor with wide eyes and dilated pupils. He is tolerant of petting on the head and cheeks with the scratcher tool but leans away to avoid contact, hissing when petting is stopped. Interaction is ended to reduce stress. Toulouse tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
