Animal Profile

Nuevo

Hello, my name is Nuevo . My animal id is #244513. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/28/2025.

Nuevo is at risk due to behavioral reasons. When Nuevo initially arrived at the care center he was observed to be fearful. Noted to thrash on leash and snapped when a staff member attempted to scan him. Recently Nuevo has warmed up to handlers and is easily leash and receptive to treats. Despite our best efforts at making him comfortable Nuevo has been observed to be heavily panting, barking persistently, and hyper salivating. Medically, Nuevo is apparently healthy.

Meet Nuevo! Nuevo was brought in as a stray and is still getting comfortable in the shelter. He can be nervous around handling and has shown he prefers to be approached slowly, but he's food-motivated and will take chicken or treats with gentle coaxing. Staff report he can be tense on the leash and prefers calm, patient interactions when leaving his kennel. My Ideal Home Nuevo would thrive in a calm, adult-only home with handlers who are patient and experienced with dogs that need a gentle approach. A household that can provide predictable routines, slow introductions to new people and environments, and positive-reward training will help him feel safe and build confidence. Working with shelter behavior staff or a trainer experienced in management and counter-conditioning is recommended. Good with Kids? No - Nuevo has shown stress around handling and would do best in a home without children so he can settle without high-energy or unpredictable interactions. Good with Other Pets? Unknown - there's no reliable history with other dogs or cats. Any introductions should be done slowly and under close supervision; he may prefer to be the only pet while he gains confidence. Leash Manners He has been uncomfortable on leash in the care center, at times thrashing or snapping when approached for handling. Nuevo will benefit from an experienced handler, secure equipment (no-slip harness or head halter as advised by a trainer), and short, calm training sessions using high-value treats to build positive leash skills.

Summary:: 1/13/26: Nuevo greets another dog at the gate with tense body. He then begins to methodically bark, looking at handler. 1/15/26: Nuevo is off leash with a decoy dog. He is tense and immediately mounts.

Summary (4):: 2/9/26: It is reported that Nuevo caught the handlers finger while jumping up to bite the leash in kennel. 2/8/26- Nuevo is at the front of his kennel barking at handler as they remove his kennel cover. He's barking at the wall towards the neighboring kennel and his neck is soaked with saliva. Handler presents a treat which he gently takes through his kennel door. He is easily leashed and when exiting the room he cage fights. He is taken for a street walk. He continuously pulls hard while walking and checks in with handler taking treats. He is social with handler and follows the command to sit, he is rewarded. He has no reaction to people walking by. He allows handler to scratch his head and neck. He is easily clipped and when returning to kennel Nuevo pulls hard towards the kennels on his hind legs. He readily goes into kennel without further issue.

Summary (5):: 2/1/26: Nuevo is at the front of his kennel, slightly wiggly. He takes treats gently. He jumps up on his hind legs when the kennel door is opened. He is easily leashed. When exiting the kennel room, he pulls and lunges towards the other dogs in their kennels. Otherwise, he exits the building to the backyard without further incident. The walk is kept brief due to Nuevo's limping outside. Upon return, he again pulls towards the other kennels but not as hard. He willingly enters his kennel. 02/01/26: Nuevo is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he is offered treats and accepts them gently and allows leashing while distracted before being brought to the backyard for his walk. Outside Nuevo pulls mildly and walks with handler around the perimeter of the yard showing moderate interest in dogs in the neighboring play yards by staring with a tense body but quickly loses interest on his own and walks with handler exploring the inside of the play yards. He accepts treats gently from handler and allows for brief pets, he also relieves himself outside and after walking for a while uneventfully, he is brought back inside. Nuevo allows handler to clip his leash and he returns to kennel without issue. 1/31/26: Nuevo is at the front of his kennel, neutral body, looking towards the exit. His chin and chest are wet. 1/26/26- Nuevo is at the front of his crate heavy panting, barking and hyper salivating with his neck very wet when handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls hard when exiting the room. He is taken for a street walk. He pulls moderate to hard at times to spots to sniff. He randomly jumps up on the handler seeking treats. Handler presents them holding them down, Nuevo jumps down and automatically sits taking the treat gently. He has no reaction to people passing. When Nuevo sees other dogs he fixates and stares at them with a tense body with a mild pull towards them. Handler presents treats and he follows momentarily then looks back again, handler has to keep walking to give distance and once out of sight Nuevo continues walking. He follows the command to sit and is rewarded. Nuevo sniffs around some more then is returned back into the building. He is easily clipped, when handler went to return to the crate he pulled back and pulled towards the door. Handler tossed treats into his crate, he followed for a moment then again pulled towards the door. Handler tossed in more treats and applied pressure to Nuevo's leash towards his crate, he saw the extra treats tossed and went in without issue. Once back in the crate and unleashed Nuevo turns to the front of his crate and starts to barking while heavy panting.

Summary (6):: 1/26/26- When a staff member walked by Nuevo's room they could be heard barking and when the staff member entered the room Nuevo was standing at the front of their kennel panting heavily and barking non-stop. When the staff member exited the room Neuvo could still be heard barking. 1/19/26: Nuevo was standing at the front of his crate when the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken to the street. Nuevo pulls hard exiting the building, while on the street he readily relieved himself and does not react to dogs or people. When he sees a pigeon Nuevo will lunge and pull hard towards them. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily using coaxing. When returning Nuevo pulls hard back into the building. The handler is able to clip their leash and return him to his crate with ease. 1/18/26: Nuevo is at the front of the kennel barking consistently and repeatedly. He is easily leashed and taken out of his crate. Nuevo pulls around the hallway sniffing the passing crates. He is called away. He is brought to the elevator where he jumps on the handler exuberantly. Nuevo is redirected with treats which he takes gently. He is taken to the street where he pulls moderately and relieves self. He pulls hard enough where he begins to gasp. Handler puts Nuevo in a leash harness and his pulling becomes mild. After sometime outside, he is brought back to the shelter and he is returned to his crate without issue. 1/15/26 (playgroup): Nuevo is at the front of his crate, barking at the dog in a crate across from him. He is easily leashed and brought out. While riding the elevator, Nuevo quickly jumps on the handler. He also follows the ‘sit’ command when given. Nuevo also sniffs and jumps on familiar handlers as they stand in the hallway. Nuevo is then brought to the yard and placed on a long line. He also receives himself. (See dog-dog notes). Afterwards, the handler switches leashes and brings Nuevo inside, returning him to his crate with ease. 1/14/26- It has been observed that Nuevo is barking inside his pop up crate. 1/12/26: Nuevo is at the front of his crate barking. When handler approaches, he stands with a soft body and wagging tail. Nuevo is easily leashed and taken out of the crate. He pulls towards some pop-up crate to sniff them. He is called away and taken downstairs to the street. On the street, Nuevo walks with a loose leash besides the handler. He allows petting on his back. Nuevo relieves self and walks back to shelter. He is returned to his crate without issue.

Summary (7):: 1/8/26: It is noted on the whiteboard on 1/7 that Nuevo "pushes back and lays down when returning". 12/31/25: Nuevo is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and slow wagging tail; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Nuevo walks ahead with mild to no leash tension; he occasionally stops to sniff and relieve himself a few times. As the handler gently pets his head, Nuevo shies away, but allows it. Nuevo is then brought inside to the office. There, he sniffs other handlers and eats treats. When returning him, Nuevo plants his feet in the office; as the handler drops treats in front of him, Nuevo walks out the office. The handler clips their leash and returns Nuevo to kennel with ease. 12/30/25: Nuevo is standing off to the side at the front of the kennel. Handler greets him and offers him some spray cheese. He licks up the cheese. Handler presents the leash and tries to leash him. Nuevo backs away and retreats to the back of the kennel. Handler coaxes Nuevo to the front with cheese again and he is successfully leashed very slowly. Nuevo is taken out of the kennel and out of the room. He walks with the handler with a loose leash and a a neutral body. He relieves himself as he is brought to the street. Nuevo walks besides the handler sniffing his surroundings and relieves himself again before he is brought back into the shelter. He avoids entering and retreats as he gets closer. Handler verbally coaxes him and he follows the handler back inside. He is brought to the behavior office where he eats more spray cheese and walks around the office. A familiar handler comes in and he greets them socially with a soft body and a wagging tail. He jumps up on them socially and leans into the familiar handler curling up next to them. He then approaches the main handler and does the same. A toy is offered to Nuevo and he walks around the office with the toy, bouncing around the office and shaking it. After, he is slowly walked back to kennel where he tries to quickly retreat. Handler coaxes him verbally and he walks back to kennel. Nuevo is returned with out issue. 12/29/25: Nuevo is standing at the front of the kennel with a tense body and face when the handler approaches. The handler unlocks the door and tosses treats. Nuevo is not receptive. The handler attempts to leash Nuevo, however when the leash touches him, he flinches back and retreats. The handler offers chicken which he is receptive to. Using chicken the handler is able to slowly leash Nuevo and he is removed from kennel and taken to the yard. While in the yard he quickly relieves himself and sniffs around. The handler offers treats and he is receptive, otherwise aloof to the handlers.

Date of intake:: 12/28/2025

Summary:: Thrash, snapped at staff member, fearful

Date of initial:: 12/28/2025

Summary:: Timid, shaking, sedated

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Nuevo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the behaviors seen in the Care Centers, Nuevo should go to an adult only home. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Nuevo has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Nuevo should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Nuevo has been observed to become tense and move away while in the possession of a toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Nuevo's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: When staff attempt to walk Nuevo, he thrashes on leash and has escalated to snapping attempts to scan him. Nuevo is uncomfortable with certain handling. Positive reinforcement should be used to help him associate handling with things he likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handouts on Handling/touch sensitivity and Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Nuevo has been observed to become tense and stare at other dogs while on leash with raised hackles. Nuevo will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Nuevo has been observed to jump up and bite the leash in kennel. During one instance catching the handler's finger. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
