Animal Profile

Kano

Hello, my name is Kano. My animal id is #246033. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/28/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Kano is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in his previous home. Kano in his previous home is reported to lunge at children, strangers and small dogs on his walks, but this is a behavior that has not been displayed in the care center. Kano is also noted to have some arousal concerns, and resource guard his food when people approach by growling or barking. Kano in the care center is social with staff and loves to play in the yards. Medically, Kano is apparently healthy.

I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Other

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Kano is noted to use the bathroom often inside the house. A consistent schedule, increased supervision, and reinforcing outdoor elimination would help improve reliability. Please see the handout on House soiling. Resource guarding: Kano is noted in the prior home to Growls or hard barks when his food is touched. Training should focus on trade-up exercises, predictable feeding routines, and reinforcing voluntary disengagement to prevent escalation. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Destructive behavior: Kano is noted to have Destructive tendencies (furniture, walls, shoes, household items, etc.),Providing appropriate enrichment, structured activity, and supervised free time can help redirect this behavior and reduce destruction driven by boredom or anxiety. Please see the handout on Destructive behavior. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Kano is noted to jump up on people often. Reinforcing calm alternatives—such as sitting for attention can help improve his greeting manners. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Kano is reported to lunge towards children, small dogs, and joggers. The prior owner notes that Kano wants to play with children. Training should focus on increasing distance from triggers, reinforcing handler engagement, and teaching alternative behaviors to reduce lunging. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Kano is noted to hard pull while on walks outside. Training should prioritize loose-leash walking skills, rewarding moments of slack, and using supportive walking equipment to increase control and safety. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. Other: On 1/16/26 Kano was going into the elevator with another dog where both dogs began to snap at each other. The owner other dog snapped at Kano's ear and nipped a small cut on his left ear flap.
