Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Barry is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. Barry is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to their stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

His foster writes: Barry is a stately, shy roommate, who moonlights as a ninja late nights. Although quite timid when she came to us, her personality is really coming out with time. She enjoys tuna squeeze treats, watching the neighborhood at her window seat, and late-night Soprano's binges. Although she's still a little shy, she's getting bolder every day, and her current favorite activities are climbing into the windows to get a good view, watching like a hawk when we cook in the kitchen, and playing with her fish toy when she thinks we can't hear her. I know she'll make a wonderful companion to someone looking for a sweet, independent addition to their home.

FP emailed concerned about difficulty giving medications (Barry is very timid/stressed). 1819 advised holding off on gentamicin/gabapentin/doxycycline as long as eating well/acting normally (contact us if not). Should be able to clear URI in foster without meds.

Basic Information:: Owner died

KNOWN HISTORY:: Barry was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. This cat lived with other cats in their previous home. Barry was adopted and lived in a home for about 2 months. During her time in the home, she has had a hard time adjusting, even when living with just one adult. Barry exhibited territorial behaviors and has frequently tried to bite and/or scratch the owner. Barry will bite and scratch their feet and hisses at them when they're preparing her food bowl, biting/scratching the food bowl out of their hands. The owner has worked with the behavior team to get advice on how to modify this behavior. They pay attention to her body language, gave her space, did not try to pet her, and used positive reinforcement to help get Barry out of her shell. They have tried all the suggestions, but Barry's behavior persisted; she continued to swat and try to bite even when left alone and has started have litter box accidents.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/28/21 Hiding inside den. He pokes his head out once but couldn't coax him out so offered some treats through the vent holes. Gave him a shor-line cover and some catnip toys. He comes out to the other kennel space to make eye contact then retreats to his den. 10/30/21 In den, and when turned sideways could still not make eye contact and Barry moved farther from the door, but then he slowly exited the den and moved into the other kennel. He made brief eye contact before slinking back into the den. 10/31/21 She pokes her head out of the den when offered squeeze ups and eats some. Accepts gentle pets on the head but would shift away after a couple of strokes. She came all the way out and sat by the front, watching the light show. She ate more squeeze ups when given and remained outside for a long time. 11/3/21 Immediately comes out of the den for tuna on the lick mat when placed in the cage for enrichment. However, she ate it with caution and when left alone with the door closed. Avoids contact when attempting to go in for pets. 11/04/21 Quiet on top of den, large pupils, eyes down, avoids most eye contact and ignores Rachel ray treats. 11/5/21 Barry continues to run off when attempting to interact. Avoids contact with no interest for the wand toy during playtime for enrichment. 11/06/21 Sniffs treats while on top of den and when approached to pet jumps off and flees into the other kennel. 11/7/21 Sits upright and watches the light show. He remains by the front and eats squeeze up offered. He accepts gentle pets on the head while eating but retreated to this den when hearing the door opening. 11/8/21 Sitting in the middle of the kennel, watching me with dilated eyes but blinks when coaxed. Focuses on the scratcher tool and sniffs it carefully, but leans away and lifts paw up when petting is attempted. I was able to pet briefly but she'll immediately dart and retreat. 11/9/21 Comes out to the front and sits upright when hearing the assessor talk to other cats. She remains in place when slowly approached and ate some chicken from my fingers. She accepted brief scratches on the head and continued to eat more chicken offered. Would watch the wand toy fly around the room but doesn't really engage. 11/10/21 Came out for tuna from the lick mat when placed inside the cage. However, she quickly ran into the den when attempting to interact with her. 11/11/21 Sits upright when hearing assessor talk to other cats. She remains in place when slowly approach and allows her kennel to be slowly opened without retreating today. She eats the squeeze up from the finger and accepts brief head scratches while doing so. Enjoys the light show and to watch the wand toy. 11/12/21 Curious during playtime with the wired butterfly toy for enrichment. He kept his distance and just engaged for offered treats when left alone. 11/13/21 Quiet, allows petting, east treats, a little hesitant, flinches. GAN

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Barry has made progress in the care Center but her history suggests that we go slowly when working with her, and use caution and well considered judgement when making placement decisions. She was fairly calm on top of the den, looking out while sitting in the "lion pose". She was slightly ware, yet curious but pulled back slightly when approached to be pet, but then while eating treats allowed gentle petting along the back. She remained slightly unsure but has improved. We're adding her back on to socialization and then will see if she would benefit from another assessment on or around 12/16/21. See notes in the GAN. Barry tolerates brief petting and attention in the care center. She is at times apprehensive of people and has shown a tendency to escalate in a home environment; biting and scratching her owner due to discomfort. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization and we are unsure if she will thrive in a human home environment. We recommend all attempts to socialize this cat before placing her into a human home. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
