This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Bark Wahlberg needs emergency placement due to behavior concerns. In the kennel, Bark Wahlberg lunges, hard barks, and snarls at dogs passing his kennel, displaying high reactivity toward them and making it difficult to house him at the Care Center safely. Medically, Bark Wahlberg is apparently healthy. A volunteer writes: This handsome tan and white boy is Bark Wahlberg. Bark arrived in late September, underweight but just as good-looking. The day we met him he was distracted by observing all the sights and sounds of his new environment, but we captured his attention with peanut butter which he happily lapped up. After that, he embraced his 80s idol namesake, and quenched his thirst right from the garden hose! In the weeks since I first met him, I often find Bark out in the yard with another volunteer who has taken to him. He's playful, healthier, and always comes over calmly to give me an affectionate greeting. With all his charm and good looks, it's a surprise to me that this cutie hasn't been scooped up yet! Bark arrived with the police after his owner was arrested. He was loose when he arrived and approached staff to eat all their treats, and was offered peanut butter in exchange for putting a collar on him (which worked like a charm!). At the shelter, the behavior team has learned that Bark is food motivated and has responded well to the clicker and treat training. He has been noted to stare at dogs at a distance, but can be redirected with food. He chases our outdoor cat, and should not be in a home with one. During his assessment Bark was scared of the "assess-a-hand" and hid behind the assistant when approached with it. Bark Walhberg is looking for a level 2 home, without young kids, and this handsome guy is waiting for you at Brooklyn ACC! Hi! My name is Bark Wahlberg! Here's what my friends at ACC say about me: Fun facts: Bark Wahlberg has been known to shower his favorite people in love! Currently working on: Clicker training My ideal home:I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. For a new family to know: I am playful and cute! I am not one to sit still! I will flourish in a home with someone that will keep me mentally and physically active! Please check here for updated adoption hours.

Upon intake, Bark Wahlberg had a loose wiggly body and stopped and stared as another dog walked past him, pulling slightly towards them. He approached staff to sniff their hands and ate every treat offered, initially taking it roughly but then switching to a softer mouth when taking treats. He allowed staff to scan him while he was eating treats and head turned while being collared but was successfully distracted when staff offered him peanut butter while collaring. He caught treats with his mouth when tossed in the air and also responded to the sit cue for treats.

Summary:: Bark Wahlberg was surrendered to BACC as a stray. Limited information was provided and his behavioral history with other dogs is unknown. 9/22/22: While off-least at the Care Center, Bark is introduced to a novel female dog. He is sexually motivated and sniffs her with a high flagging tail. He marks the play yard repeatedly.

Summary (1):: 12/7: Bark Wahlberg is observed to leash bite during his morning walk. The handler offers him a toy but he ignores it and continues to climb up the lead. A second handler offers him treats and he initially doesn't release but after a few seconds begins to eat the treats. The second handler continues to throw treats to make a trail for him to exit the building to start his walk. 12/05/22 When handler approaches, Bark is standing on his kennel door. The handler tosses a toy in his kennel so he wouldn't bite the leash, but Bark ignores it. He allows the handler to collar him with no issues, however, once out of the kennel, Bark jumps up and bites the leash. Bark does it for a quick second and lets the leash go. The handler tosses a toy to redirect Bark's focus, but Bark again shows no interest. The handler proceeds outside where he takes Bark for a walk. Once outside, Bark immediately begins to pull hard on leash. He continues this for the remainder of the walk. The handler proceeds to return Bark back to the facility. Bark is still pulling hard with no signs of stopping. Bark is rushed to his kennel room where he enters his kennel quickly.

Summary (2):: 11/28: Throughout the day, Bark is highly reactive to dogs entering and exiting the room as they pass his kennel. He lunges, growls, hard barks, and will throw himself against the bars if the dog is in close proximity. 11/26/22 When the handler approaches, Bark is anxious, jumping onto his kennel door. The handler attempts to leash Bark, Bark snaps at the rope. The handler tosses treat to refocus him and is then able to leash him. Once Bark is leashed, as soon as he exits, he snaps at the rope again, this time catching it. The handler must give Bark a toy so he would let go, seconds later, neglecting the toy. Exiting the building, Bark was anxious, dashing from side to side. Outside, Bark intensely pulls on the leash. The handler stops to administer treats in order for Bark to calm down. When returning to the facility, Bark is still pulling and once in the building, is hopping and attempting to run. When entering his kennel, however, he went in with ease. 11/02/22 - When Handler approaches kennel, Bark is relaxed, resting laying down. When Bark see's Handler, he calmly rises and waits to be leashed. While heading to the play yard, Bark pulls hard on leash. Once Bark is in the yard, he allows handler to attach a drag leash with a loose body and proceeds to engages with a snuffle mat. Bark displays strong food motivation. Handler works on clicker training with him and rewards him each time he performs the "sit" command. After playing, the Handler takes Bark for a walk, where he continues to pull hard and fixates on other dogs from a distance. Eventually he breaks focus as the other dogs move away and handler rewards him. He allows handler to re-clip his leash and pulls hard on the way back to kennel but returns without issue.

Date of intake:: 9/21/2022

Summary:: loose, wiggly, accepts treats

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2

Recommendations:: No cats,No young children (under 5)

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to Mark Whalberg taking treats with a hard mouth, we recommend a home without young children at this time. No cats: Due to Mark growling and charging at cats, we recommend a home without cats and smaller animals.

Potential challenges: : Other,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Bark Whalberg has displayed poor bite inhibition when taking treats. He has left teeth impressions and red marks on handlers when accepting treats. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Bark Wahlberg pulls hard on leash and has the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which helps diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, and reward-based training to not pull on a leash. Other (prey drive) - Bark Wahlberg has been observed to growl and charge at cats. Adopters must remain vigilant when walking Bark and use and reward him with treats and praise when he is refocused.
