Prince
Hello, my name is Prince. My animal id is #235193. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 8/30/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Prince is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Prince in the care center has been not acclimating well despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Prince is heard digging at his kennel door repeatedly, even during quiet hours. Prince out of his kennel is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate inside of his kennel. Medically, Prince is diagnosed with CIRDC.

I would prefer someone who can be home with me most of the time.

Summary:: Although Prince was surrendered by their previous owner, there is no information available regarding their interactions with either familiar or unfamiliar dogs. 09/04/25: Prince is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Prince approaches with a soft and wiggly frame. Both dogs will engage in mutual greetings. The gate is opened, with the Prince on leash, and the novel female is given the opportunity to approach which she does. Both dogs will meet face to face and display play bows. This will initiate a game of chase play. After some sessions both dogs will begin to calmly co-exist with one another. Both dogs are separated concluding the interaction.
Summary (6):: 9/16/25: As handler approaches kennel, Prince is on his hind legs vocalizing and is slipping on his own saliva, which the kennel door is covered in. Prince is offered a treat through the loop and is leashed with ease. He pulls mildly down the hallway and begins to reverse sneeze, continuing to do so on the ramp. Once in the play yard, Prince toggles between sniffing and soliciting attention from the handler by jumping up and leaning in to pets with his hind end. Prince pulls mildly into the building and is secured safely in his kennel. 09/13/25: Prince can be heard digging at his kennel door repeatedly. 09/12/25: Prince is observed digging at his kennel door in a quiet room repeatedly throughout the evening. 9/9/25: Prince was leashed with ease and walked to the yard where he was clipped to a drag leash. He was disinterested in treats. Prince was highly social with handler and solicited frequent contact, leaning into pets all over. Prince was gentle and loose bodied throughout interaction. He was returned to kennel with ease. 9/4/25: Prince is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches with a loose and wiggly body. He begins jumping up at the door as the handler unlocks it and leashes him. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would approach the handlers with a loose body and wagging tail. He would lean in for pets and was comfortable receiving treats. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He is able to rerun back to his kennel with no issues. 9/4/25: Prince is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches with a loose and wiggly body. He begins jumping up at the door as the handler unlocks it and leashes him. He is then taken to the play yard for play group. In the yard, he greets the other dogs at the gate with a loose body and wagging tail. He is able to interact and play with the other female dog. Please see dog to dog noes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues.
Summary (7):: 9/03/25: Prince is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body and will be leashed but without cooperation due to arousal. He will begin jumping up, pawing at the glass, and getting his paws stuck in the lead multiple times. Once leashed, Prince will then be brought out for an enrichment walk, where he will maintain a soft and wiggly frame while exploring the neighborhood and walking on a loose leash with the handler. The handler will speak to Prince in a soft voice, asking him to perform a focus cue while other dogs pass by, and he will eagerly engage with the handler, focusing on the command and being rewarded in the end. When walking back to the care center, Prince will become frightened and hyper alert due to loud motorcycle sounds, but he will continue walking with the handler and be reassured. When the walk around the neighborhood is complete, Prince will be brought back to the care center and returned to his kennel safely without any issues. 9/1/25: Prince is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body as handler approaches. He begins jumping and pawing at the door as the handler unlocks it. He continues to jump at the door and paw at the handler’s leash as he tries to push out of kennel. He had no interest in treats and the handler is able to quickly leash him and then he is taken for a walk outside. On the walk, he would pull ahead with a tense body and hard stare at dogs and people as they passed by. He would approach the handler with a loose body and wagging tail. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 08/31/25: Behavior assistance is requested due to Prince being reluctant to enter kennel. Behavior handler slowly approaches and offers treats as a lure but Prince shows no interest. Behavior handler takes the lead and begins to guide Prince into kennel, using their legs to brace his hind end. He pushes backward hard, slipping between their legs and begins thrashing and rolling. Behavior handler readjusts the grip on the lead, loosens any leash tension and waits a moment for Prince to settle. Once Prince stands up, Behavior handler walks him to the Canine Behavior Office to decompress. He shows no interest in high value treats offered to him. Prince walks with a tense frame, pinned ears, tucked tail to his new kennel, balking at the entrance to the room. Handler runs him in and as soon as he gets to the front of kennel, he begins thrashing and spinning again. A second handler double ropes him and both handlers muscle Prince into kennel. He continues to back his way out and handlers use their legs and the door to carefully push his hind end into kennel. Due to ropes being tangled, a hook is used to carefully remove them.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Handling / Touch Sensitivity/Fearful:Prince displays significant sensitivity to handling, particularly during leashing and restraint. He thrashes when being leashed and becomes tense during medical exams. These behaviors suggest discomfort with physical contact and restraint, requiring slow, low-stress handling and desensitization to touch. Please see the handout on Handling / Touch Sensitivity. Fearful / Anxiety:Prince becomes frightened and hyper-alert in response to loud environmental stimuli, such as motorcycle sounds. These reactions indicate noise sensitivity and general anxiety, and he may benefit from confidence-building exercises and exposure to calming environments to reduce stress and improve coping skills. Please see the handout on decompression period and generalized anxiety.
