Jellie Roll
Hello, my name is Jellie Roll. My animal id is #223190. I am a desexed female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 6 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/26/2025.
Jellie Roll is at risk due to behavior concerns. Her previous owner states that Jellie Roll had destructive tendencies in the home, was on leash reactive, and mouthy. During her previous stay in the care centers, Jellie Roll was also observed to be fearful, noted to hard bark, snap, and growl at handlers while in kennel or when attempting to leash her. Recently, she has started to deteriorate in kennel, displaying very high levels of fear, anxiety, and stress. She is often reported and observed to be pacing back and forth at the front of her kennel with dilated pupils, is heavily panting, hyper salivating, and persistently licking and chewing the kennel bars. Jellie Roll is engaged and receptive during her training sessions and is fairly food motivated. Medically, she is healthy.

Jellie Roll was found tied to a pole in the Bronx, wearing a jacket and attached to a frayed leash. A good Samaritan waited with her until NYPD's 50th Precinct arrived and brought her to the Manhattan Animal Care Center. While her past is unknown, what's clear is that this smart, sensitive girl is eager to start a new chapter with someone who understands her need for patience, consistency, and love. 🐾 My ideal home Jellie Roll would thrive in a calm, adult-only household with a structured routine. She bonds with her people when given time and space, and she'll do best in a home that allows her to go at her own pace. A quiet setting and slow introductions to new experiences will help her gain confidence and blossom. 👶 Good with kids? Jellie Roll is recommended for homes without children. She can be uncomfortable with fast movements and sudden approaches, and she prefers to build trust gradually with the people around her. 🐕 Good with other dogs? While Jellie Roll has walked past dogs on the street with no issue, she showed some tension during greetings in a playgroup setting. We recommend she be the only pet in the home, or have very slow, supervised introductions if other dogs are present. 🩺 Overall health Jellie Roll is about 3 years old and weighs 46 lbs. She has been vaccinated, microchipped, and is overall healthy. She was treated for an upper respiratory infection and is currently recovering well. 🧠 Behavior determination: Level 3 Jellie Roll is a Level 3 dog due to her initial fear-based behaviors, such as barking and snapping during leashing. However, she's come a long way-she now accepts gentle handling, responds to treats, and enjoys walks.

Handler tosses treats onto snuffle mat she is engaging with, as handler steps closer in distance, and changes direction, etc, a high value is tossed adjacent to the mat. A reward marker (clicker) is used to mark the moment Jellie Roll disengages with the snuffle. Towards the end of the session she was looking up without prompting. She heavily learned in for pet and got the zoomies briefly. Handler took Jellie Roll to the yard to attempt an agility session, however, Jellie Roll remained uninterested in handler and treats. Date of intake:: 3/26/2025
Summary:: Aloof, tense during MC scan
Date of initial:: 3/27/2025
Summary:: Loose wiggly body, became tense and flailed during muzzling
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Jellie Roll so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Jellie has been observed to become tense and hover over a toy, when the assess-a-hand persists Jellie snaps at the hand. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Jellie's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive Behavior: Jellie's trail adopter stated that she would chew on furniture. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Jellie will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Mouthiness: Jellie's trail adopter stated that she would mouth their hands. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Jellie puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Jellie's trail adopter stated that she would growl at select people while in the elevator. During her previous stay Jellie Roll was observed to be fearful. Noted to hard bark and snap at handlers when they attempted to leash her. During her current stay Jellie has been observed to lip curl and snap towards handlers while in kennel. It is important to move slowly with Jellie, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Jellie has been observed to become tense and fixate on dogs and people while in leash. Jellie will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
