Litter box training: Energy level/descriptors: Medium Energy Level Other notes: He is described as an independent, quiet, and solitary indoor cat who prefers contact on his own terms. He spends most of his time in the living room of his home or following his person around the home. He plays rough, chases and pounces on toys, likes things that crinkle, stalking feet, and scratching on wood, rough rope, fabric, and carpet surfaces. He takes a while to warm up to new people but is affectionate and enjoys laying with his person once he does. He eats both wet and dry food or various brands and likes having raw meat, chicken, or fish as a treat. Displays defensive behavior. Struggles, squirms, stress meows, hisses, growls, or nips when having his nails trimmed, coat brushed, when he is picked up and held, or when he is placed in a carrier. Reportedly hides in fear, nips or swats when pet for too long, dislikes cats. Upon intake, cat was easily transferred from his carrier to a den and placed in kennel. He was not collared or scanned due to FAS.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/12/26 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face initially hidden from view. I leave him some treats and a catnip toy and walk away. When I check on him a few moments later I see that he's eating his treaties and his head is poking out of his den. He hisses at me and I slow-blink and speak to him softly briefly before lowering his cage cover back down. It's good that he is responding to enrichment - will continue to build positive associations! 6/14/26 FB25 Celime is inside of his den. When I open the kennel door, he quickly pops just his head out. He has wide eyes and is crouched to the ground, and has neutral ears. After a few moments, he returns slow blinks. When I slowly reach in to give him a tray of squeeze up, he first has no reaction, then lets out a low growl and backs up when I push it closer to him. I withdraw my arm and just sit speaking softly to him. He pops his head back out after a few moments and returns more slow blinks. He is sniffing the air as if interested in the squeeze up, though doesn't eat any in front of me. 6/22/26 FB79 Inside of the den, Celime could he heard hissing when i entered; as i lifted the den cover he was hunched with a tense body, wide eyes and his ears forward. I spoke to him softly but he kept hissing as his ears titled. I tossed in some treats but he had no interest and ketp his eyes on me for any movement. As i brought in the tool his eyes dilated and he quickly ran out of the den with a low body attempting to jump on the den but i tried to pet he darted back into the den where he had his shoulders hunched in and his ears now flat. I kept speaking to him and he lip licked followed by lookinf away to avoid eye contact. 6/26/26 FB79 Inside of the den, Celime darts out when i lifted the den cover and sits with a tense body - arched back low head and shoulders with wide/dilated eyes. When i speak he slow blinks but then avoids eye contact with me as i continue to speak and slow blink. I tried to offer treats but he hissed and darted back into the den where he started to look around then darted back out with a low body as he slow claimed to the top of the kennel where he watched me closely with wide eyes. I didn't try contact today and kept talking to him as he looked around the room behind me. 6/29/26 Vol. He was laying in his den. I tried to get his attention with a churu but he started growling no matter how slow I approached. I gave him a few minutes but I couldn't coax him out of the den. 7/07/26 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face initially hidden from view. I leave him some treats and a catnip toy and I walk away for a few moments. When I check on him again he is half-way out of his den, eating his temptation treats. When he sees me he hisses softly and slow-blinks, his face and body slightly softened. I speak to him softly and return slow-blinks to try and help reduce stress/negative associations with staff. Potential challenges comments:: Owner reported he is easily overstimulated and has the potential to nip or swat, sometimes making contact, when his boundaries are pushed. He has not had any reported scratch incidents since 2025 but reportedly is not a fan of cats or new people. The client stated she had him since he was a kitten and he just warmed up to her at the end of last year.  He is reportedly known to occasionally urinate or defecate outside the litterbox and the client did not have a suspected motive. He is accustomed to having access to both a covered and an uncovered litterbox with scented litter located in the hallway of his home. The box was reportedly scooped twice a day, not shared with other cats, and located in a quiet area of the residence. The client attempted to modify the behavior by cleaning the entire box, scooping more often, changing the type of litter and adding additional boxes but the behavior did not improve. Celime seems to inherently be a more fearful cat which has made it hard to get him to warm up to his previous owner, taking 3 years, as well as the difficulty with new people and children. It may be possible that his litter box issues are related to a high level of FAS related to his environment as there were children and other cats in the home. With children, he is noted by his previous owner to be shy and timid, hiding initially and preferring contact on his own terms. If boundaries are pushed he may escalate to hissing, stress meowing, growling, swatting, or nipping. An with cats he may escalate to hissing, stress meowing, growling, swatting, or nipping. He also lived with dogs and while he was noted to be friendly and tolerant, he was also noted to escalate similarly if his boundaries were crossed. Even if he didn't share his litter boxes with the other cats, inappropriate elimination is one of the ways cats can communicate that there is something wrong to their owners. It appears that Celime's environment contained many variables that may have increased his already fearful/sensitive temperament (children, cats, dogs potentially). If he remained in this heightened level of stress the occasional litter box incidents may have been his way to communicate that he was stressed. His litter box usage will be monitored in shelter and updated after 14 days. 6/22/26 Celime's litterbox usage has been monitored since 6/6/26 and he has been consistently using his litterbox with only one accident reported on the 8th. He seems to know his boundaries and set/communicate them appropriately, displaying defensive aggression and has had 4 reported scratch incidents towards people from 2025. The client explained most incidents did not draw blood and were caused by his boundaries being pushed.

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Single-pet home,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to his reported high level of FAS in his previous home as well as behavior towards children, cats, and potential for escalation if his boundaries are crossed with dogs - and adult-only and single pet home is best for Celime. His previous owner reports that with children; Celime is shy and timid, hides initially and prefers contact on his own terms. If boundaries are pushed he may escalate to hissing, stress meowing, growling, swatting, or nipping. With cats, Celime may escalate to hissing, stress meowing, growling, swatting, or nipping. While Celime may be friendly and tolerant with dogs, he may escalate similarly with dogs.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Celime is in his den and completely hidden from view - he cannot be coaxed out of his den. He hisses and low growls as the assessor offers out the scratcher tool near the den portal, as well as when the portal is closed. When the assessor then lifts the den cover, he is sitting hunched with a wider stance with his front legs, his head low, eyes wide and dilated, and ears tilted. He is trembling and looks around almost looking to flee when the door is lifted up a bit and the tool is introduced to attempt to make contact. He is somewhat tolerant of touch along his neck and sides as on his chest but remains tense and wary, turning away. After the tool is removed and the den cover is replaced, den portal opening - he pokes he head partly out of the portal with eyes wide and dilated. Pick up was not attempted. 07/06/26 Celime displayed similar behaviors during his reassessment. Celime tolerates some attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
