Slim
Hello, my name is Slim. My animal id is #210784. I am a desexed female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 10 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/7/2025.
Slim is at risk due to behavioral reasons. When returning to kennel Slim will quickly turn and escalate to biting the leash, baring teeth, growling at the handler, and jumping at the door. During her previous stay in care Slim was noted to retreat to the back of the kennel with a tense body and showing whale eye. While out with handlers Slim is receptive to treats. Medically Slim is emaciated and has dental disease.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Upon entering kennel, the leash is accidentally dropped by handler and Slim pulls the leash into kennel while it's still on her neck. Handler initially tries to reach at the front bottom of kennel where the leash is a couple inches away. Slim is growling and baring teeth and handler closes kennel door. Handler uses hook to retrieve leash, Slim is snapping and growling at the hook, eventually the leash is retrieved safely with hook. 8/3/25: Slim is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and is taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she had a loose body frame and was comfortable approaching the handler and siting for treats. Slim re-enters kennel without issue, continues to take treats as they are dropped into kennel.
Summary (4):: 7/18/25: Slim is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins to hard bark and jump at the door as the handler unlocks it. She continues to hard bark at the leash until the handler is able to distract her with treats. Once leashed, she is taken to the play yard for play group. In the yard, she greets the other dogs at the gate with a loose and wiggly body. She would approach the handlers and sit and stare to receive treats. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She is able to return back to kennel with ease. Once in kennel, she hard barks, growls and jumps at the door as the handler tried to unleash her. In the room, she would approach the handlers for treats and growl at the handler when they went to pick up the drag lead. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. She is able to return back to kennel and be unleashed when the handler tossed treats inside. 7/10/25: Slim is sitting at the front of her kennel when approached. The handler has her 1pm feeding and attempts to place it in Slims kennel. As the kennel is opened Slim attempts to break out but only manages to stick her head out. The handler closes the kennel and slim steps back. The handler attempts to place the food in a second time and slim goes for the bowl and attempts to eat all of it as it fell in the kennel. The handler attempts to close slims kennel and slim begins growling and baring teeth. Each time the handler attempted to close the kennel Slim would attempt to bite at the handlers hand making it difficult to properly close the door. Slim has a tense body and begins hard barking and growling at the handler. Unable to close the door the handler keeps their knee on the door as slim begins slamming her body against the kennel door. The handler attempts to leash slim to have better control and was unable to. Slim continues to growl and bark while baring teeth. A second handler is called and slim was not receptive. A leash was placed in the kennel in an attempt to grab her but slim bite at the leash. The growling and baring teeth continued as a third handler is called. The third handler is able to leash slim and relocate her to a different room.
Summary (5):: 7/10/25: Slim is standing at the front of the kennel vocalizing when the handler approaches. She is receptive to treats, when the handler attempts to leash her with a pre clipped leash she shys away from it and retreats to the back of the kennel. Slim readily exits kennel and is taken to the street for a walk. She relieves herself quickly and walks on a loose leash. Slim does not react to people or dogs. When returning to the shelter the handler is able to easily clip their leash. Slim ready enters kennel and the leash is easily removed. Slim continues to vocalize. Handler ends interaction. 7/8/25 (6pm walk) Slim is easily leashed but tense. Walks very well. She relieves herself and explores the parking lot. When she was returned to medical, she jumped into the kennel quickly. Once in kennel, she low growled a bit and didn't allow to clip the leash. She then was sweet talked and coaxed to come out and she did well. I was then able to pre-clip although she was tense. She re-entered her kennel with ease once more. A "Special Instructions Behavior tag" was placed on her kennel to "Pre-clip". Along with a "Go Slow with me" sign. 10/08/24 (PM) Slim's behavior remains the same. The handler uses a lead instead of clipping her collar and although she dodges the lead a few times, Slim is leashed, allowing the loop of the lead to go around her neck. Slim will exit her kennel loosely, playfully jumping. When being returned after their walk, Slim will enter her kennel no issue and vocalize after the kennel door is closed. 10/08/24 Slim's behavior remains the same. Low- growls and grumbles when taken out, but once let out of the kennel and her collar is clipped outside of the kennel, she is visibly more relaxed and less vocal. When being placed back in kennel, she becomes tense, whipping her head around and grumbling. She doesn't escalate, running into her kennel rather. When the kennel door closes, she begins to hard bark. 10/7/24: Slim alternated between growling at the kennel door and growling while in a bow position. She continued this when handler presented leash so a second handler's assistance was requested to distract her. Slim displayed the same behavior when handlers returned but was able to be leashed while distracted with a squeaker. Once leashed she exited kennel willingly and was walked to the BA room. Slim was clipped to a drag leash and then relieved herself. She was loose bodied and social with handlers, frequently soliciting attention and treats. Before exiting BA room, handler placed slip leash over head and unclipped drag leash. Handler felt but did not hear a grumble. When handler attempted to clip leash to a figure 8 Slim began growling loud enough for others in the room to hear. Slim was returned to kennel where she resumed growling and a hook was used to remove slip leash
Summary (6):: 10/06/24 Slim grumbles in her kennel as the handler approaches. The handler unlocks the kennel door and slowly shows Slim the drag leash in which they will use. Slim sniffs it and allows the handler to grab her collar, clipping her collar and taking her for a walk. Slim displays a soft, wiggly body as she slightly pulls on leash. Slim will playfully jump onto the handler, allowing the handler to pet her. Slim will start/stop during the walk, catching the zoomies and running back and forth. slim will take treats moderately when administered and catch them when tossed. Slim and the handler will commence their walk as Slim continues to pull a bit on lead. Slim is returned to the facility where she enters the building and her kennel with no issue. 10/6/24: Slim was growling in kennel when handler approached. Handler crouched in doorway and Slim approaches near enough to be lassoed. Once leashed Slim exited kennel willingly and walked to the BA room. Slim would play bow and bounce around when other handlers entered room. She avoided slip leash but was returned to kennel without issue. As handler was removing leash she began thrashing and growling. 10/05/24: Slim (formerly Sweet Pea) is standing at the front of kennel, growling as handler approaches. Handler kneels down and cracks door open in order to leash her. Slim displays a tense body and growls before sniffing handler's hand and allowing them to clip her to a drag lead. She is walked to the Canine Behavior Office and is free to explore the space. Immediately after entering, Slim will turn back to the door and nudge it with her nose. She cautiously approaches handler as they sit on the couch and her body will loosen slightly as they pet her side. She is avoidant of the other handlers in the room and will keep her eye on them as she moves about the space. A second handler tosses a squeaky toy which Slim will play bow for and then fetch. She keeps the toy with her on the opposite end of the room and chews it for a minute before jumping up on the couch and relieving herself. After her session, Slim is walked back to kennel and will immediately begin growling and whips the lead off of her head. Slim continues growling as handler locks the kennel door and exits room.
Summary (7):: 10/04/24: Sweet Pea is at the front of kennel with a loose wiggly body as handler approaches. As handler unlocks the kennel door, Sweet Pea begins to bark and low growl. She does not show interest in treats that are offered to her. Handler kneels down, cracks open the kennel door, and Sweet Pea allows for her collar to be clipped with a neutral frame. Once out of kennel, Sweet Pea is loose, wiggly, and bouncy. She is walked to the play yard where she is free to explore the space. She spends time scenting the yard, hypersalivating while doing so. Handler kneels down and Sweet Pea will approach, leaning into handler for petting. When handler stops petting, Sweet Pea leans in again for contact. After her session, she is returned to kennel safely. 10/03/24 Sweetpea is at the front of her kennel with a wagging tail. As the handler unlocks the kennel, she begins to low growl but allows touch as the handler feels out her collar. The handler clips her collar ad takes her for a walk. Sweetpea displays a neutral frame with a very slight tucked tail which will eventually loosen as she becomes more relaxed. Sweetpea maintains a moderate pace as she trots alongside handler. The handler will speak to her in a high pitch voice where she will wiggly a bit and jump playfully onto handler. Sweetpea takes treats roughly and will catch them when tossed. Sweetpea is returned to the facility where when entering the building the handler drops their keys. Sweetpea will pick them up with her mouth and bring them to the handler. The handler then uses their fob to enter the building. They proceed to her kennel where she is placed with no issue. 9/30/24: Sweet Pea was leashed with ease and walked to the BA room for her assessment. Sweet Pea displayed FAS with skittishness and intermittently hid under the desk. A second handler sat on the couch and tossed pieces of sausage toward her. Sweet Pea was highly food motivated and would quickly take the treat and then immediately retreat. Notably Sweet Pea remained standing for duration of this interaction and did not lay down under desk. Her assessment was postponed and she was returned to kennel with ease. 09/29/24: Sweet Pea is fearful crouching down in the back of her kennel as handler creped the door open to leash her. Sweet pea will fearful avoid the leash when handler is attempting to place leash over her head. Sweet Pea will be leashed and brought to the BT room where a drag leash will be placed on her and she's free to roam around, Sweet Pea will go to a corner of the room and begin whining as her tail remains tucked and she will seek exit as handler attempts to give her high value treats but she refuses. Sweet Pea will be returned back to her kennel safely with no issues.

Summary:: Allowed all handling
Date of initial:: 7/8/2025
Summary:: Initially body relaxed and easily examined but had episodes of low growling and staring intensely at
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Slim so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness: Slim has been observed to take treats with moderate pressure. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Slim to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Handling Sensitivity: Slim has been observed to growl when handlers attempt to clip and/or unclip her leash. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Slim to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: During her previous stay Slim FKA Sweet pea did not adjusted well and displayed fearful behaviors such has a tense body whale eyes. She tends to retreat to the back of her kennel and exhibits fearful avoidance when handlers attempt to leash her. During her current stay Slim was noted to growl and bare teeth towards handlers in kennel. It is important to move slowly with Slim, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
