Animal Profile

Carrot Cake

Hello, my name is Carrot Cake. My animal id is #234391. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 8/15/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Carrot Cake is on the at-risk list due to behavior and medical. He is a young cat brought in as a stray and could possibly be an under socialized young adult and is not thriving in the care center. He continues to be reactive and display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Medically, Carrot Cake has ringworm but due to fractious behavior we are unable to treat with lyme dips. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

KNOWN HISTORY:: Carrot Cake was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/21/25 FB61 Sitting upright in front of kennel, ears forward and face neutral. He tolerates petting on his head with the scratcher tool while beginning to tilt his ears. He shows immediate interest in the squeeze-ups offered and ate all of them. 8/29/25 FB58 Not willing to tolerate any sort of touch or interaction today. Hisses as I approach with a lot of green nasal discharge, loafed with a tense face and body, eyes wide and pupils dilated. Hisses and growls when the tool is offered out to him and swats multiple times. Leave some treats.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Previous bite occurred in shelter during intake exam on 8/15: Vet Assistant was handling Carrot Cake for the veterinarian. The interaction went great at first; the cat allowed all handling. During the exam, the vet started to touch the cat's back legs. He turned around and bite VA on the left thumb, leaving 2 puncture wounds, one on the front knuckle and one on the back knuckle. After that, the vet put him in a panni press and placed him in a kennel. VA washed her hands and cleaned her fingers with chlorhexidine. Carrot Cake appears to have a limited threshold for interactions of any kind whether it be kennel cleaning or petting and socialization. During his assessment, he initially appeared neutral and accepted pets along his head and cheeks and leaned into the touch with the scratcher tool, accepting some pets on his head with the assessor's hand as well. With limited warning, he then tensed and begins to hiss, growl and pulled away. When the scratcher tool is offered again, he begins to stress vocalized, hiss, and growl as he raises his paws to swat at the tool multiple times and later on attempt to bite the tool. It is not clear at this time if it is due to limited socialization or overstimulation, as he does initially lean into some pets. See Medical Enrichment Note on 8/19 in GAN for more details regarding cage cleaning and escalation.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Carrot Cake would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach Carrot Cake is sitting loafed at the front of the cage with a mostly neutral face and body, ears forward, and tail wrapped around his body. He sniffs the scratcher tool offered and allows pets along his head and cheeks, as well as along his back. He leans into/ head bunts a few pets on his head, and allows a few pets on his head with the assessor's hand. He then with limited warning, tenses and hisses, pulling away and hissing hard with his ears tilted and eyes wide. He begins to snarl and swat when the scratcher tool is offered. He hisses and snarls again before moving to the other side of the double kennel and sitting loafed tightly and continues to vocalize. When the tool is offered again, he attempts to bite. The interaction is ended and pick up is not attempted. He continues to remain in this state as the assessor is interacting with another cat below him as well as the whole time they remain in the room, growling and hissing. Carrot Cake is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, does not currently tolerate extended petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
