Celsius
Hello, my name is Celsius. My animal id is #249108. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/6/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormCelsius is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Celsius in the care center will at times refuse to enter back into kennel, balking and pancaking in the hallways and when attempted to be taken outside on several occasions, will pancake and refuse to walk up to the ramp at times. Celsius is social with handlers, easily leashed, and is very affectionate, but is having trouble navigating the care center environment. Medically, Celsius is apparently healthy.

Celsius came into the care center as an owner surrender. Due to this, his history in a home environment is unknown. Celsius has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. He is noted to pace and seek exit, and will balk when returning to his kennel room. Celsisus has warmed up with select handlers and will approach them with a loose, wiggly body, soliciting attention from them and engaging in play with plush toys. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

He is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he would approach the handler with a loose body and wagging tail and is comfortable taking treats and receiving pets. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 3/26/26: Celsius is standing up at his kennel door as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he has a loose body and wagging tail as he approaches the handlers to receive treats and pets. He is able to be slowly taken back to his kennel with no issues. 3/23/26: Celsius is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he has a loose body frame as he explores around. He is comfortable approaching the handlers and would take treats and accept pets. When the handler re-enters the room with another handler, he becomes tense and is comfortable approaching the handler when they bend down and he would allow petting. He then becomes loose with a wagging tail again. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues as the handler speed walks into his kennel room and towards his kennel door. 3/22/26: Celsius is lying at the back of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He comes to the front, jumps on the door socially. Celsius is leashed with ease and pulls hard towards the dogs in crates when walked through M&G (the typical path used was blocked off for ISO walks). Once in the room, Celsius is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. He is social with handlers throughout his time in the room and will readily approach and lean into petting along head, neck, and body. After his session, Celsius is walked back to the kennel where he will balk at the kennel room door and light directional leash pressure is used to guide him back to kennel.
Summary (7):: 03/20/26: Celsius is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He jumps up onto the kennel door socially and is leashed with ease. Celsius balks on the stairs to the exit but is lured with a squeaker. Once outside, he balks again at the end of the ramp and will not come forward for coaxing, squeakers, or treats. Using moderate leash pressure, Celsius is guided forward and then begins to follow a second handler who is exuberantly coaxing him. Once in the yard, he is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. He pulls hard towards other dogs on his way back to the building and balks outside of kennel room. Handler uses directional leash pressure, and he returns to kennel safely. 3/15/26: Celsius is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Celsius so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We Celsius is placed in adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Celsius has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression:While in their care, Celsius was fearful, he would growl and show teeth at officers but would not escalate. Upon intake he was fearful and staff handled minimally. In the care center Celsius is noted to become pace, seek exit and become avoidant of handlers. When taken back from walks he is noted to balk and not want to go back in his kennel. Training should emphasize slow, predictable handling, minimizing exposure to sudden noises, and reinforcing calm behavior to reduce fear-based defensive responses. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
