Animal Profile

Zorro

Hello, my name is Zorro. My animal id is #231317. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 8 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/6/2025.

Zorro is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Zorro arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Zorro is showing signs of deterioration in kennel. Recently Zorro has observed to be panting heavily, intensely vocalize, pace, paw at bars, with dilated pupils while in kennel. Staff have reported that at times when approaching his kennel, Zorro is lunging toward front of kennel, growling, baring teeth. When attempting to place a kennel blocker on his kennel door, Zorro muzzle punched the door and started to bite the attachment hook of the kennel blocker. Outside of kennel, Zorro is noted to be social with staff and treat motivated. Medically, Zorro is apparently healthy.

When Zorro initially arrived at MACC he was highly fearful. Noted to have a tense body, whale eye and would escalate to baring teeth towards handlers. During his assessment he was also observed to be panting and pacing. Overtime Zorro has warmed up to handlers and has become recent to treats and will engage with a loose body. However recently Zorro has become highly relucent to exit the care center. Zorro is observed to baulk in the hallway right outside of his kennel room. He will then begin to pull back towards the room or further into the building. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home.

Summary:: Tense body. Opted to sedate

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Zorro so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive/Anxiety: Zorro has been observed to have a tense body, whale eye, seeking exit, panting and pacing his assessment. Zorro has also been reported to bare teeth towards handlers. Recently Zorro has become very reluctant to walk and will not exit the care center. It is important to move slowly with Zorro, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
