Animal Profile

Zorro

Hello, my name is Zorro. My animal id is #231317. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 7 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/6/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Zorro is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Initially, Zorro while noted to be fearful at times, Zorro was consistently able to be walked outside and in play-yards without issue. Recently however, Zorro has been refusing to walk outside, especially during his mid-day and evening walks. Although easily leashed, Zorro has been baulking in the hallways of the Care Center, unable to be coaxed forward with treats, verbally, or leash pressure. This has been happening when attempting to bring him out to sidewalk or play-yards. Recently when brought into an office, Zorro refused to leave and a sling had to be used to lift Zorro out of the room. With familiar staff Zorro is noted to be social. Medically, Zorro is apparently healthy.

Medically, Zorro is apparently healthy. Zorro arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. When Zorro initially arrived at MACC he was highly fearful. Noted to have a tense body, whale eye and would escalate to baring teeth towards handlers. During his assessment he was also observed to be panting and pacing. Overtime Zorro has warmed up to handlers and has become recent to treats and will engage with a loose body. However recently Zorro has become highly relucent to exit the care center. Zorro is observed to baulk in the hallway right outside of his kennel room. He will then begin to pull back towards the room or further into the building. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home.

Date of initial:: 7/7/2025

Summary:: Tense body. Opted to sedate

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Zorro so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive/Anxiety: Zorro has been observed to have a tense body, whale eye, seeking exit, panting and pacing his assessment. Zorro has also been reported to bare teeth towards handlers. Recently Zorro has become very reluctant to walk and will not exit the care center. It is important to move slowly with Zorro, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
