Madame Lola
Hello, my name is Madame Lola. My animal id is #235807. I am a desexed female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/28/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Madame Lola is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Madame Lola arrived at the Care Center as owner surrender. Madame Lola was noted to be wiggly and social with staff for both intake and medical exam. Her previous owner noted that Madame Lola is a "very high" energy dog and will jump frequently for attention. Madame Lola has been noted to have poor impulse control and signs of low-threshold for arousal. During handling assessments Madame Lola is noted to be jumping on staff and mouth handlers hands frequently. On walks, handlers note that Madame Lola continues to be treat motivated and exuberantly social. Medically, Madame Lola is apparently healthy.

Meet Madame Lola, an approximately 1-year-old, medium-sized dog with very high energy. Surrendered due to a new baby and lack of time, Lola is seeking an active forever home. She's incredibly social and affectionate, thriving on human companionship. While initially shy around new people, children, and dogs, her playful nature emerges once she's comfortable. She's partially housetrained, a little fearful of loud noises, and has no known medical issues. Madame Lola needs a patient family committed to continued training and exercise. If you're looking for a loving, energetic companion ready to blossom with confidence, Lola might be the perfect addition to your family!

Lola will accept treats tossed before continuing to jump up on handler so handler begins walking Lola on a shorter leash which stops her jumping. She pulls moderate to hard during her walk and passes people without issue. Lola walks for a while with handler without incident and will rarely stop to sniff spots on the street or to relieve herself. Lola attempts to pull towards dogs nearby during the walk; she keeps her focus on them while walking away, and she un-focuses when the handler calls her name. Both while entering and leaving the building, Madame will pull towards and jump on staff members when walking past them with a loose body. The handler is able to clip their leash and return Madame to her kennel with ease.

Madame Lola occasionally jumps up on handler with soft body in social manner, handler is able to redirect her into a sit for treats which she takes gently. Treats ineffective to lure upward, handler switches to elevator and returns Madame Lola to kennel without issue, she takes treats dropped into kennel. 10/13/25: White board notes that Madame Lola is "very jumpy, but social" 10/11/25: Madame Lola is standing at the front of her kennel with a loose and wiggly body as handler approaches. She occasionally stops to relieves herself and sniff around and doesn't mind the passersby. The handler speaks to her in a baby voice, and she jumps onto the handler socially. She is fed a treat through the bars and is easily leashed. She would have a mild pull outwards of the room with her ears pinned back and a tense body. She is taken for a street walk for her assessment, where she is pulling hard ahead of the handler. As handler would call her name, she would quickly look at the handler and then begin to pull away from the handler. She would spot a dog, would look at them for a brief second, and continue to walk away. She is then taken back to the assessment room, where she would shy away from the handler while heavily panting and wouldn't allow collaring due to high FAS. She is then clipped and returned back to the kennel; interaction is then ceased

ENERGY LEVEL:: Madame Lola is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Madame Lola.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to a low threshold for arousal and poor impulse control we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness: Lola was obsvered to mouth handlers hands during her assessment. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Lola puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful: Lola's previous owner states that she is fearful of loud noises. Lola is observed to be very reluctant to allow collaring. Noted to retreat quickly from handlers and whip her head back and forth. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Lola would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Arousal/ Basic Manners: Lola's previous owner states that she will jump up often. Lola was observed to be very aroused during her assessment. Noted to be running around the room, persistently jumping up on handlers and being difficult to position. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Lola to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. Lola should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Lola. Please see handout on Arousal. Please see handout on Basic Manners.
