Thio
Hello, my name is Thio. My animal id is #211057. I am a desexed male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 6 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/28/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- new baby.
Thio is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Thio has been displaying high levels of kennel stress during his stay. In the kennel, he has been seen alternating between panting with a flushed face/red eyes, growling, baring teeth, lunging, and hard barking when approached in the kennel or if a person lingers in front of his kennel. He has also been observed to stare at his saddle doors. Out of the kennel, Thio does solicit attention, engages with his enrichment, and readily accepts treats. Medically, Thio is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with dogs in my previous home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. A generous donor paid my adoption fee! A volunteer writes: Even though we just met him, Thio is a familiar face. We knew two of his puppies this fall, Molly and Bella, both of who have moved on to their next steps. These pups come from a big home, with 3 other adults and a litter of puppies born this fall. We meet Thio on a frigid day in early January, and something about him feels like warm gentle hug. He's worried and shy, and taps his paw nervously into our palms. After a few tries and some delicious sausages she gets braver, lifting his paw higher and placing it more confidently in our hands. From there he decides he's comfortable enough for cuddles and each time we move a step away, he returns and gently pushes himself into us. Thio has been fearful, which is understandable given his life and circumstances. He's looking for a home that's experienced in going slowly and gently. He is waiting at Queens ACC.

Summary:: According to Thio's previous owner(s), Thio has interacted with different dogs and is often described as friendly and outgoing with familiar dogs. No experience with unfamiliar dogs. 02/13/25: When off leash at the Care Center Thio is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate Thio approaches with a stiff frame and flagging tail. Thio pauses on the approach and displays paw raises. Thio offers prey bows before displacing scenting and marking. Thio takes no further interest in the novel male. Due to Thio's discomfort a face to face greet was not conducted. 01/02/25: When off leash at the Care Center Thio is introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate Thio approaches with his ears back and tucked tail while he displacement scenting. Thio scents the greeter female with his paw raised. Thio walks away, returning to displacement scenting. When Thio returns he keeps his head turned away practicing avoidance as the greeter female remains present. When the greeter female offers a play bow, Thio will retreat and begin seeking exit taking no further interest in the greeter female. Due to Thio's discomfort the interaction was ended and a face to face meet was not conducted.
Summary (4):: 3/27/25: During rounds, Thio will hard bark, jump, lunge, and snap at an unfamiliar staff member through the kennel. 03/26/25 (Trainer Note): Thio is lying on the front of his bed which he has moved to the front of his kennel. Thio jumps several times and playfully tries to avoid the leash. Thio is leashed with a treat easily and pulls mildly to the Live Room. When inside. he clipped to a drag leash and proceeds to sniff the room thoroughly. After some encouragement, Thio is able to focus on the enrichment, and can orient to the trainer between enrichment items. Thio knows how to sit, and takes treats with a soft mouth. Thio leans into pets and solicits more attention when the trainer stops. Thio is leashed again with a treat and walks calmy back to he kennel. 03/10/25 (trainer note): Thio is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame. Handler attempts to use leash to loop him, but he quickly lowers his head and backs away with a loose tail wag and proceeded to play bow. This is attempted again using high value treats, and Thio continued to dodge the leash and jump back and forth in a conflicted fearful, yet playful manner. Once Thio approached the front of the kennel again, handler was able to clip their leash to his collar and walked to the behavior office. During his time in the room, he tentatively begins to use the various enrichment items with a neutral frame and high stiff tail. He then approaches handlers with a loose body and tail wag for pets. He was able to practice "sit" and knows how to give paw. He was leashed and returned to kennel with no issues. 3/18/25: Thio began hard barking and growling at an unfamiliar staff member that linger in front of his kennel for a few minutes. 03/12/25 (Trainer Note): Thio is jumping at the kennel door with dilated pupils as the trainer approaches. This was easily leashed and pulls mildly to the Live room. Once inside, This is clipped to a drag leash and takes treats with a soft mouth. Thio moves around tentatively and begins engages with the enrichment, but does not orient to the handler. Thio begins to lose interest in the snuffle mats, so the trainer gives him a lick matt with some spray cheese and hotdogs which he readily engages with. Thio begins to orient to the trainer whilst alternating between engaging with the lick mat and snuffle mat. Towards the end of the session Thio solicits pets and leans into more and his body become very wiggly and loose. When it is time to leave the Live room, Thio begins to play bow and run around the room. He is easily leashed with a treat and calmly walks back to his kennel. RO
Summary (5):: 03/05/25 (trainer note): Thio is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and low tail. He did not approach novel handler at first but was easily leashed using treats and walked to the live room with no issues. He slowly explored and marked the room with his tail low. Handler was able to engage with Thio using high value treats and he shortly began to soften up and give a loose tail wag. Thio knows "sit" and was able to practice "take a breath" exercise with focus on the handler. Handler went slowly and was able to leash him up and return to kennel with no issues. 03/01/25 (Trainer Note): Thio is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. He allows the handler to attach a drag leash and sniffs the entire room with a slightly tense body before moving over to the handler. He wags his tail lightly as the handler acknowledges him. Handler brings him over to the snuffle mat and he engages with it readily. Handler approaches and retreats as he eats and Thio remains soft and loose. He begins to look up as the handler approaches. Thio is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 02/20/25 (Trainer note): Thio is standing in his kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches, he is leashed and taken to the canine training room. There we worked on approach and retreat dropping treats onto a snuffle mat. Thio stiffened and body blocked at first and relaxed a little after a few minutes, his frame remained tense. He looked up at the handler as they approached the snuffle mat and waited for reinforcement. He took treats with a soft mouth after training. Thio pulled moderately and was returned to his kennel easily. 2/20/25: Thio is standing in his kennel with a neutral body frame as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and taken to the live room for enrichment fun. In the room, he was not interested in any of the enrichment items and would sniff them then walk away. He wouldn't approach the handler when treats were offered. He would mark his territory around the room, and would continue to hard stare at the handler with a tense body frame and low tail. He would lip lick while staring at the handler as well. He was taken back to his kennel due to being very nervous.
Summary (6):: 2/16/25: Thio's behavior in care remains the same. See dog-dog summary. 1/28/25: Thio greeted handler at front of kennel and stood neutrally as he was leashed. He walked to the yard where he was clipped to a drag leash. Thio seemed possibly housetrained as his kennel was clean and he relieved himself once outside. Thio spent much of the time sniffing intently and was fairly aloof. He was disinterested in a soft squeaker toy but readily approached handler when offered treats, which he took gently hand fed with a low tail wag. Thio pulled moderately on the way back to kennel where he walked straight in. 2/17/25: Growling, bareing teeth and lunging at door during rounds. 1/26/26: Excessive panting, red eyes, flushed face and staring at the glass of his transfer door during rounds. 1/18/25: Thio is at the back of his kennel looking at the handler when approached, and once the handler unlocks his kennel door he begins to wag his tail, and become more neutral bodied. Thio is brought out of his kennel and sees a dog on his way to the sidewalk and begins to play bow. Thio is refocused with the handler due to the other dog not appreciating the play bow, and is receptive to treats. Thio on the walk is aloof to the handler, but warms up overtime with treats and scatters throw on the floor throughout the walk. Thio is taken back to his kennel where he needs to be coaxed with treats into kennel and enters slowly, but with no issue. 1/10/25: Thio is lying in the middle of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and walks on a loose lead out to the play yard. Thio is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. He spends time scenting before approaching handler. Handler offers treats but he shows no interest. He accepts petting with a loose frame and will continuously approach to solicit petting whenever handler stops. Thio will jump up placing his front paws onto handler. Handler tosses a soft toy, and Thio will scent it but does not engage with it any further. After his session, Thio is leashed and returns to kennel safely. 1/2/25 Thio is lying down as the handler approaches. Thio will gently rise and come forward allowing the handler to leash him. They will proceed outside to the play yard for play group. Thio will trot over to the play yard with a still frame and tucked tail. (Please refer to BA dog-to-dog for insight). When returned to kennel, Thio maintains his still frame and tucked tail. Thio will enter his kennel with no issue.
Summary (7):: 12/31/24: (AM) Thio greets the handler standing at the front of his kennel. The handler tosses in high value chicken into his kennel. Thio consumes them off of the ground. When offering them through the gate Thio approaches with caution before quickly taking it with a soft mouth. The handler is able to easily leash Thio and escort him out of the care center. When on walks Thio will walk ahead of the handler with a stiff frame as he vigilantly scans the environment. When a large truck passes Thio attempts to plant himself down. The handler coax's him through and they continue the walk. When Thio is away from traffic Thio frame loosens up and he begins scenting what ever arouses his interest. Thio is escorted back to the care center, unleashed and secured in his kennel without any issues. 12/30/24 (PM): Thio was standing at front of kennel when handler approached. He lowered his head and dodged leash but stayed right at front of kennel. Once leashed he exited kennel and walked outside to the yard. Thio relieved himself while outside. He was not intially interested in treats but eventually ate numerous Churu hand fed. He allowed handler to pet him on the chest and shoulders. Thio kept a tucked tail and trembled but continued to eat treats and did not move away from handler. He was returned to kennel with ease. (AM): Thio is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. Handler tosses treats which Thio will readily eat. Once handler presents the lead, Thio retreats to the back of kennel with a tucked tail and trembling body. He no longer accepts treats that are offered. Handler slowly uses a lasso technique to leash Thio and he slowly exits kennel. He walks with a low tense body, tucked tail, slicked back ears. Once in the Canine Behavior Office, he spends time scenting and will actively seek exit; pulling hard toward doors. Handler kneels down and Thio will walk within short distance of them, allowing brief, light, petting with a slightly loosened frame. He continues to pace and exit seek so handler returns him to kennel. 12/29/24: Thio is standing at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. High-value treats are offered, but Thio picks them up and drops them, showing little interest. When the kennel door opens, he retreats to the back, crouching with a tucked tail and pinned-back ears, displaying signs of fear. The handler uses a lasso technique to leash him, and Thio slowly exits the kennel, following the handler on a loose leash. Thio will remain fearful outside but will still explore and sniff around his surroundings and relieve himself. Thio will be escorted back to the care center and returned to his kennel safely with no issues.

Summary:: fearful, allowing handling
Date of initial:: 12/28/2024
Summary:: Fearful, muzzle was placed, patient started screaming, alligator rolling, urinating, defecating.
ENERGY LEVEL:: Thio is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Thio
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Thio's intense fearfulness in care, we recommend he go to a home with no children. .
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Thio is noted to have accidents in the home. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. See handout on House Soiling. Resource guarding: Thio is noted to hover over his food/toys. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Thio's mouth, and any time something is removed, he should be rewarded with a high-value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and engage in trade-up games. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Thio has demonstrated a lack of basic manners in the care center, jumping up onto staff. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it," "Sit/Stay," and "Down" be reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. See handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Thio in the care center has escalated to growling/lunging at staff members attempting to remove him from kennel, and is noted in his previous home to bark at strangers. Thio should never be forced to greet or interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Thio would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. See handouts on Decompression Period and Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Thio is noted to be an anxious dog. We recommend long walks and puzzle toys to help alleviate his anxiety .See handout on Generalized Anxiety.
