Animal Profile

Accordion

Hello, my name is Accordion. My animal id is #214011. I am a male white cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 11/6/2024.

Accordion is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. A volunteer writes: Accordion gently wrapped his big fluffy paw around my hand to pull it closer to his face and won my heart in the process. Adorable as his sweet little move was, it was also an affectionate way to say we're friends. It took us a few extra moments to get there, but it was worth it. Accordion isn't so sure about the shelter right now. He'd been huddled in the back of his cubby like a majestic fluff and welcomed me when he noticed the treat I had. I happily held his beloved squeeze up snack and was prepared to stand there all day, but then Accordion had a change of heart. Making new friends can sometimes take time and Accordian comes along when he's ready. He has a roster of adorable moves like leaning his cheeks and head into my hand, softly purring, and of course, pulling my hand to his face. I could've sat like this for hours, but each time the door opened Accordion would take a step back and we'd have to start again. While we don't know too much about Accordion's history prior to coming to the shelter, we know he's going to shine when given the chance.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Accordion was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11.09.2024 Previous Assessment: Accordion was inside the den upon approach alert with eyes wide, pupils dilated. He hisses and stiffens in crouched position with ears forward. Lip flicks throughout the assessment allowing pets along the head and body with the scratcher tool through the side portal door. Remains wary and ignores offered treats. 12.09.2024 Previous Assessment: Inside cubby with wide eyes, Accordion ate treats the assessor offered. He gently put his paw on their hand. After quite some time of soft-talk, the considerate approach paid off with Accordion leading into neck pets. He pushed into head rubs and was unbothered by back strokes. He remained calm and relaxed when the assessor performed a touch gradient towards his abdomen, which was where they simulated pick up by applying gentle upward pressure. He remained in his cubby, but was beginning to trust at his own pace. 12/15/24 Previous Assessment: Accordion has been reported to spit/lunge and swat during recent interactions and his behavior appears to be conflicted. He was lying down curled up at the back of the top cubby with a neutral body and eyes. When spoken to and opening the door, he perks up and leans his head forward to eagerly accept puree treat out of the tube from the assessor's hand. He remains calm and allows petting on his head, cheeks, body, and under his chest for 1 minute while he continues to eat the puree treat. When the assessor pulls the puree treat out to coax him forward, he spits and attempts to swat at the assessor's hand with his eyes wide and ears tilted and he lip licks. After he calms down, the assessor attempts to offer the puree treat but he spits and attempts to swat again, so the interaction was ended. 12.13.2024 Vol. In top cubby - he hissed when I brought over stepstool. When I was reading report, Accordion came out to main cage to lunge and hiss. I was holding treat bowl and he lunged again - going back and forth between main cage and cubby- hissing and jumping to front. Did not attempt to interact. 12/15/24 Vol. Resting in back of cubby. Exchanged a few blinks, but when I looked in again after filling a cup of treats, hissed, then came forward and hissed again. Came out to main kennel area and ate some squeeze-up, but then retreated to the cubby and hissed again. Came forward to eat squeeze-up from the tube, and licked my fingers. Sniffed Temptations, but didn't eat them. Leaned into my hand for a few head scratches, but may have just been looking for more squeeze-up. After only a few seconds, batted at my hand, tearing the glove. 12/17/24 Vol. Sitting in back of den. Tried to swat me when I opened the door but then he gave me some slow blinks after some sweet talk. Followed laser with his eyes; sniffed at Squeeze-ups. Able to scratch his head with the scratcher tool for a short time.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow,Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,Playful,Curious,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Accordion is very treat motivated with puree treats. We recommend using treats to distract or coax him when preparing to pick up or handle the cat and to build positive associations with human interactions.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Dur to fearfulness and conflicting behavior. Counselor discretion is advised.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Accordion was resting inside his den upon approach, appearing alert with neutral eyes and ears erect and forward. He allowed petting along the head and body using the scratcher tool through the side portal door. Despite this, he remained wary of his surroundings. After a few strokes, he soft swatted, leading to the end of the assessment. Accordion tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
