King Bentley
Hello, my name is King Bentley. My animal id is #211211. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 9 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/22/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
King Bentley is at risk due to behavior concerns. In his previous home, King Bentley was known to bark and growl at strangers, though he would eventually warm up. When around other dogs, he tended to lunge and snap, and he bit a dog in the home while guarding his food. At the Care Center, King Bentley was reported to kennel fight when leaving the room. He was initially fearful but gradually became more comfortable with the staff. Medically, King Bentley is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I need a home where there are no other pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: King Bentley is a very cute and playful guy with the spirit and energy of a puppy. He clearly enjoyed exploring natural surroundings, in the park. He likes toys and loves treats. He enjoys being petted, and adorably, he would slump against me for maximum contact during petting sessions and then roll over for the all-important belly rubs. His leash manners may be a bit of a work in progress, but he's an intelligent dog that likes to be praised, and with the right adopter, I'm sure he'll get the hang of it. He just needs someone patient and gentle who will use lots of positive reinforcement. He has tons of love to give. Once he decides a hooman is made of the right stuff, he LOVES that hooman.

He leaps out of kennel and pulls very hard on his hind legs towards the street. He maintains a neutral body on his walk, but becomes very loose and wiggly when called over. He is fixated on all the smells and scents, pressing his nose into the ground and inhaling deeply. He spends significant amount of time sniffing, and will not move forward with the use of treats or squeakers. He does not react to people, children, or a stroller passing by, he still is mainly focused on sniffing. He is returned to kennel without issue. 4/8/25: King Bentley is at the front of kennel with a loose body and jumping on kennel bars. He is leashed using a treat as a lure and removed from kennel. He leaps out and is jumping down the hallway on his hind legs. Handler keeps him on a short leash and as close to the wall as possible. He is taken to the street for a walk. He pulls moderately and maintains a soft body throughout the walk. He regularly checks in with handler and gets very wiggly. He leans into handler legs for pets and accepts treats gently. While passing by other dogs he will fixate, become slightly tense, but was very easily redirected with a squeaker noise. He is returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (6):: 03/30/25: King Bentley is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He jumps up at the kennel door but is distracted by treats and leashed while distracted. He is taken to the street for his walk, during which he pulls hard on the way, stopping after crossing the street and beginning to sniff around on the street. From her Bentleys pulling becomes more mild but he focuses heavily on sniffing and is very difficult to redirect or refocus. He stops for long periods of time to sniff and uses the bathroom while out. He ignores people passing and briefly reacts to a dog across the street but recovers and goes back to sniffing once out of sight. Bentley walks for a while more before being brought back to kennel. He returns with treats tossed and interaction is ended. 03/16/25: King Bentley is at the front of kennel with a loose and wiggly body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel to be taken to the yard. He remains loose and wiggly throughout interaction, often approaching handler and soliciting pets. Once in the hall he will attempt to go back into the room. 2/28/25 (Late Entry): Bentley is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the yard for some dog-dog gate greets. Bentley is walked out to the yard and approaches the greeting gate with a neutral body and hackles slightly raised. He approaches and sniffs the dog through the gate, the other dog begins to vocalizes and becomes tense so handler pulls Bentley away. Bentley replaces the previous dog and is brought into the play yard. He interacts with handlers and accepts treats from them. Bentley then meets a second dog and is immediately more tense with hackles raised and clearly visible. His tail wags in a high and fast pace and he is tense and stares at the dog. Handlers end the interaction shortly after and Bentley is brought back to kennel and returns without issue.

He is then brought inside for a behavior assessment, during which he is hesitant to allow collaring but is successfully collared and pet with treats distracting. He accepts treats from handlers in the office with moderate pressure and is observed to be exuberant in the office, jumping on handlers and mouthing hands while looking for treats. He is brought back to kennel and returned with treats tossed into kennel. 10/06/24: King Bentley is sitting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is easily leashed an brought out to the play yard. He keeps a low head, tail slightly tucked but wagging rapidly between his legs. He is not interested in any treats or toys. Handler attempts to pet and King Bentley becomes very loose and wiggly. Rubbing up on handlers legs and jumping up on the bench, pushing handlers hands with his head. Handler utilized petting as his reward and began playing the "Up/Down" game. He was easily leashed and returned to kennel. He baulked slightly in the hallway, but was easily coaxed forward using baby voice and handler getting low to the ground. 10/3/24: King is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He walks towards the handler with a wagging tail. He is leashed without issue and brought to the street for a walk, along the way he attempts to jump up on staff socially while walking down the halls. Date of initial:: 2/23/2025
Summary:: Body relaxed initially, tensed and reared up when abdomen was palpated
ENERGY LEVEL:: King Bentley is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for King.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and lack of basic manners we recommend an adult only home. No cats: Due to hard barking, growling, lunging, and attempting to bite when seeing a cat we recommend a home with no cats. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to lunging and snap at unfamiliar dogs and a bite towards the resident dog. We recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: King's previous owner states that he will resource guard toys and food from other dogs. He will snap. We recommend that King is fed separately from other dogs. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of King's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: King's previous owner states that he will jump up non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: King's previous owner states that he will take treats hard. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach King to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: King's previous owner states that he will hard bark, growl, lunge and attempt to bite strangers and that he prefers contact on his terms. It is important to move slowly with King, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite history (dog): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Separation Anxiety/ Destructive Behavior: King is reported to experience separation anxiety in a home environment. When left alone they may show destructive behavior. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: King's previous owner states that he will hard bark, growl, lunge and attempt to bite when strangers approach to when seeing cats on leash. During his stay in the care center, King has been observed to become tense and hard stare towards dogs while on walks. King will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than people and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: King's previous owner states that he pulls really hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness. Positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
