Animal Profile

Griselda

Hello, my name is Griselda. My animal id is #207639. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/14/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.

Griselda is at risk due to behavior concerns. Her owner reported that she bit and held onto a dog after growling when owner attempted to introduce her to another dog. In the care center, Griselda is observed to lunge at dogs and small animals. Griselda is social, allowing pets and seeking attention from staff. Previously, Griselda was observed to hypersalivating, licking and attempting to the bite the kennel glass. Staff moved her back into the kennel room and saw some improvement. However, recently, Griselda has begun to hard pant and lick at her kennel bars. Griselda is now exhibiting more intense behaviors, including jumping up, barking loudly, and trying to engage in kennel fights with the neighboring dog. She has also started jumping up repeatedly on her handler, and this behavior is proving difficult to redirect. Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment, Griselda is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the shelter environment. Medically, Griselda is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I need a home where there are no other pets. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me.

Griselda is easily leashed and taken to the yard, as handler tries to clip a drag leash on her she jumps up and leash bites but is redirected with a treat toss. Griselda then gets a toy thrown and runs around the yard periodically jumping up on the handler. Handler then engages in two toy fetch when Griselda notices another dog in the neighboring yard. Griselda became tense and began to stare but was easily redirected with the toy and reengages in the game fetch. Handler pulls Griselda away is refocused on a toy and handler releashes her and returns her to kennel. 10/30/24: Griselda is standing in the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She continues to look at the handler until they have moved away from the door. Griselda then picks up the enrichment and takes it to the back of her kennel and begins interacting with it. Handler ends interaction. 10/10/24: Griselda is observed to be hypersalvating, licking and attempting to bite the glass in PAC. 9/20/24: IT is reported by staff that Griselda will jump up and down once removed from kennel. 9/11/24: Griselda is at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches with a soft body and loose tail wag. She takes treats gently and when pet she becomes a bit stiff, whale eyeing. When the handler stops petting her she continues to nudge at their hand. She does not react to anything on the street and is brought back inside. While waiting for her kennel to be finished she sniffs around the room, engages with a treat scatter, and leans against the handlers legs.
