Animal Profile

Sally

Hello, my name is Sally. My animal id is #238324. I am a desexed female calico cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 10/17/2025.

Sally is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in his/her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have lived with cats in my previous home. I have lived with dogs in my previous home. Sally tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home./p> A volunteer writes: If we brought Sally to an amusement park (we wouldn't) I'm sure she'd be the type to smile as she sat on the benches, telling us to enjoy ourselves on all the rides, completely content to watch everyone else have fun. Sally takes joy in participating from afar and I imagine that, from her perspective at least, Care Center life has seemed like one big amusement park though not a particularly fun one. Sally was brought to us with other cats and dogs and has been doing her best at the Care Center. Her best is really quite a lot. We've heard she likes closets and isn't really one to ask for attention, but she's curious about us and will accept some pets. Sally's hoping to find a patient family who will welcome and love her for exactly who she is and wants to be.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/22/25 FB61 Lying in cat den upon approach, body and face tense with her tail wrapped around her body. She raises her head and hisses when I open the kennel door, however she tolerates petting along her head and body with the scratcher tool while turning her head and sniffing it, her ears forward. She even stretches her head out to watch the scratcher with a neutral expression, ears remaining forward as the assessor is pulling the scratcher out of her kennel. Sally appears to be curious and unsure at this time. She showed no signs of escalation past hissing today. 10/23/25 Fb61 Hunched in front of kennel upon initial approach, body and face tense with her tail wrapped tightly around her body. She slow-blinks hard and hisses as I open the kennel door and she retreats onto her perch while continuing to hiss when offered treats and a catnip toy. I spend some time returning slow-blinks and speaking to her softly to try and build trust, however when I reach towards her with a scratcher tool she raises her paw and swats it. Nervous girl - needs more time to adjust. She eats the treats later after our session has ended. 10/28/25 FB06 Sally was inside her den with wide eyes watching me. As I opened the kennel door, she hissed. I offered her treats on the scratcher and she poked her head to sniff and started eating. I attempted to pet her with the scratcher but she flinched and pulled herself back into the den. She ate all the treats when I walked away. 10/31/25 FB58 On her den and hisses as the cubby door is opened, I offer her a brown bag with treats and cat nip and after a moment, she decides to come out and sit on top of the shelf for a little bit - remains tense with eyes wide. Later I return to meet with her and again, she hisses when the cage door is opened and I lift the den cover slightly, enough for us to see each other consistently. I begin by offering her a variety of catnip toys which she seems somewhat interested in and sniffs the air but is too wary to explore. I then offer Squeeze Up and she slowly leans forward to sniff it and begins to eat it but is more comfortable with it being placed on the floor. She eats a whole tube and I offer her one of the toys inside the den which she sniffs. I then just sit with her with my head on my folded arms and speak softly while slow blinking, waiting for her to loaf fully- it takes some time, but she slowly shifts from hisses at any movement, lip licks, to settling down to a more comfortable loafed position, tenses but allows me to move my arm and hand to lay at the side of the den. She finally tucks her front paws in and even leans to sniff my hand when I offer it to her. 11/04/25 FB06 Sally was laying in the front of her cage, wide eyed and hissing. As I opened the door she jumped up to the ledge. When I offered her the scratcher, she tucked herself into the corner tensing her body. I left her with a tray of crunchy treats. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: There was a previous scratch incident on 10/17/25: Sally was returned after 3 days by her adopter after being reported to not acclimate well to the home. He reported that Sally had exhibited destructive behavior in his home (scratching furniture & curtains), which prompted his decision to return her. That morning, when he attempted to coax Sally by petting her and placing her into a cardboard carrier, she responded aggressively by growling, hissing, and swatting at him. Shortly after, Sally jumped at his right leg and scratched him. The client was able to remove Sally from his leg and secure her in the carrier, although he experienced difficulty closing it. He stated that, due to wearing thick pants, the scratches were not severe enough to require medical treatment; however, the scratches did break skin. Given that Sally had access to the furniture and curtains in the home, it appears that she may have been given access to a larger part of the home than would have been recommended and was not given the appropriate amount of time to fully decompress in a smaller area. Based off of the context surrounding the scratches, it seems that within 3 days, Sally that was previously evaluated as a Level 3* in the shelter was given access to at least a larger range of the apartment. During her interaction with this adopter, Sally "did not come out of her litter box to meet the adopter or respond to treats. She hissed repeatedly and the client was not able to pet Sally at all during the interaction. The client stated they were comfortable adopting anyway and would give her the space and time needed to decompress in the home." Although there is limited information from Sally's initial home, having lived with such a large number of other animals (7 cats, unknown # of dogs), there is a high chance that Sally has not been appropriately socialized to people or presents with a high level of FAS in these new environments.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Sally would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 10/5/25 Upon approach, Sally is curled up at the back of her kennel, ears are forward and eyes are wide. When the kennel door is opened Sally remains curled up at the back of the kennel. When the assessor approaches Sally with their hand, she leans in to sniff. Head pets were given which she tolerated. When body pets were given, Sally hissed after 4-5 pets. The assessor ended the interaction at this point and closed the kennel door. When the assessor re-entered the kennel to give treats, Sally hissed again. Treats were left near the front of the kennel. 10/24/25 Upon being returned to the shelter, Sally is in her den and hidden from view. She cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the den cover is lifted, she sits with her eyes wide and dilated, face and body tense, ears slightly tilted, and begins to low growl/whine before hissing. She sniffs the scratcher tool offered, and remains tense but tolerates touch along her head and body with the tool as she continues to whine/growl. Pick up is not attempted 11/24/25 Sally displayed similar behaviors during her reassessment. 12/24/25 FB06 Upon approach, Sally was laying in her big poofy bed meowing at the assessor with a neutral face and eyes, and forward ears. Still meowing as the kennel door opens, the assessor approaches Sally very slowly offering their hand. She leans forward to sniff but the backs away. The assessor then removes the glove from their hand and offers their hand again. Sally leans forward, sniffing again, and then gently nudges the assessor's hand for petting. She allows some petting on her head before backing up and then jumping up to the back of the ledge. She then comes to the front again, rubs her head on the assessor's hand and allows a few more pets before backing up. After ending the interaction, Sally jumped back into her bed and watched out into the room with a neutral face. Sally tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
