Summary:: Gray has been observed to be highly fearful while in care, Noted to have a tense body and will growl when handlers approach. When handlers unlock the kennel to attempt leashing Gray, she escalated to snarling and baring teeth. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety observed, Gray is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (7):: 7/8/26: (KSV) Handler passes by Gray's kennel. She is standing at the front with a tense body and begins to low growl before alert barking. Handler feeds her treats through the kennel bars which she takes gently. Gray remains tense and whale eyed. The interaction is then ended. 7/8/26: It was noted on the whiteboard that Gray likes puppy food and stuffed toys. 7/5/26: Gray is lying down in the back of kennel with a tense body, ears back and visibly trembling as she growls with slight lip quivers. Handler offers treats thru kennel bars but Gray stays in place. Handler unlocks kennel and puts leash in kennel and Gray continues growling while now snarling and showing full teeth. Handler decides to let her be and walks away. 7/4/26 (pm): Gray is lying down in the back of her kennel, with a tense face and trembling body when the handler approaches; they toss both low and high value treats into her kennel, but she doesn’t get up to eat it. The handler slowly opens her kennels and brings in the pole leash; they bring it close enough to allow her to sniff it, which she briefly does. The handler lassos Gray, but she doesn’t stand up; they apply leash pressure but she resists. The handler stands to the side so Gray can come out on her own, but after a couple of minutes, she stays in place. The handler uses a hook to remove the dirty linen and food tray; they also use it to remove the pole leash from Gray. The interaction is ended. 7/4/26: Gray is sitting in the middle of the kennel with a neutral body and a tense face. Handler tosses a few treats into the kennel. She does not take them. Handler unlocks the kennel and presents the leash. She leans her head forward and sniffs the leash. Handler slowly tries to place the leash over Gray's head. She becomes tense and backs away from the leash. Her muzzle sticks outward and she retreats further into the kennel. Handler grabs some high value treats and tosses them to her. She continues to remain in the back of the kennel. Handler ends the interaction due to FAS.

Summary:: Growling and hard barking
Date of initial:: 7/3/2026
Summary:: Sedated
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Gray so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the potential for defensive behavior, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Gray has been observed to growl, snarl, and bare teeth at handlers when they attempt to leash her. It is important to move slowly with Gray, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
