Animal Profile

Mister Simba

Hello, my name is Mister Simba. My animal id is #262221. I am a male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 6 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/12/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Mister Simba is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Mister Simba has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has been challenging to manage safely when returning him to his kennel. Mister Simba is easy to leash for walks, remaining tense bodied and hard stares at dogs on walks; unable to be redirected with treats or toys. When reaching the kennel room door, Mister Simba begins to balk and thrash. Once in front of his kennel, he continues thrashing, with the addition of kicking off the handler's body as they try to walk him into the kennel. Mister Simba has escalated to snapping at a handler's arm and bolting back out of the kennel, requiring multiple attempts and double leashing to be able to get him back into his kennel safely. Medically, Mister Simba is apparently healthy.

In the care centers, Mister Simba has been generally fearful, retreating when approached and appearing sensitive to touch. Staff have been able to leash and bring him into the intake room, where he was described as alert and active, but remained fearful and avoidant of staff. As a result, we recommend Mister Simba is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Summary (7):: 8/14/26: Mister Simba is sitting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leash with ease, and he then pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he continues to pull hard ahead with a tense body and would hard stare at dogs nearby. He would constantly stop walking behind the handler and turn around to hard stare at dogs that were walking down the sidewalk. He has no interest in toys or treats. He is then taken to the yard. In the yard, he would stand at the fence with a tense body and hard stare at dogs that were passing by on the sidewalk. He is unable to be redirected with a squeaker. When he walks away, he would sniff around the yard to explore. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and begins to baulk and thrash when reaching his kennel room door. When the handler approaches his kennel, they quickly toss treats inside the kennel and he begins to thrash and kick off the handler with his leg intensely. When the handler then attempts to muscle him inside, he launches right back out and pushes himself off of the handler. The handler then gives him a second to catch a breath. When the handler attempts one more time to muscle him inside , he intensely thrashes while pushing off the handler with his legs, and then attempts to snap at the handler's arm. The handler gives him another break and releases pressure off the leash, and then calls for assistance. When assistance arrives, he is able to be double leashed, and is he is then muscled into the kennel. He attempts to thrash off and launch out as the handlers quickly close the door and lock it. The handlers are able to retrieve their leashes with a hook. 8/14/26: Mister Simba is observed to not want to go back in his kennel while standing in front of his kennel with an ACS handler. When the behavior handler approaches, the handler than tries to coax him into the kennel, but he continues to have a tense body and refuses to step forward. The handler then tosses treats and he does not have interest in them. When the handler squeaks a squeaker, he slowly steps forward, but then begins to back away. When the behavior handler then takes the leash, he then begins to thrash and back away from the kennel as they attempt to muscle him in. Once in the kennel, he quickly launches back out, and the handler then gives him a moment to settle. He is then able to be quickly muscled inside the second time and the handler quickly closes the door as he attempts to run out again and lock the door.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful: Mister Simba is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Mister Simba the option to walk away from any social interaction. Mister Simba should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Mister Simba’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Mister Simba would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
